ATLANTA — Mike Soroka baffled the New York Mets for six innings on May 1 in his major league debut at Citi Field Quinnen Williams Jersey , allowing six hits and a run while walking none and striking out five in a 3-2 victory by the Atlanta Braves.
The rookie right-hander didn’t fare as well in his next two starts, though, and he faces the Mets at SunTrust Field on Wednesday after having missed nearly four weeks because of a shoulder strain.
The Braves (38-28) are looking for a sweep of the two-game series after winning 8-2 on Tuesday night to take over sole possession of first place in the National League East and send the skidding Mets (28-35) to their 14th loss in the past 17 games.
“When you’re scoring runs at the anemic rate that we have, something hasn’t worked,” Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said before the game. “From that standpoint, I take total responsibility for where we are. I’m not happy about it. But at the same time, the job now is to figure out how to fix it and improve it. We are focused on getting the team back to where it was many weeks ago.”
The Braves had planned to give Soroka three minor league rehab starts, but they will activate the 20-year-old Canadian from the disabled list after just two to face the Mets following a 73-pitch outing for Triple-A Gwinnett last week.
“He came out of everything really well and the reports were really good,” manager Brian Snitker said. “So, we just decided to let him have (the start).”
Soroka (1-1, 3.68 ERA) was matched against hard-throwing Noah Syndergaard in his debut and this time his mound opponent will be Mets ace Jacob deGrom.
DeGrom, the victim of lack of run support and bullpen failures, took his first loss Friday while turning in another quality start, allowing four hits and two earned runs over eight innings against the New York Yankees while striking out eight.
The right-hander struck out 13 over seven innings against the Chicago Cubs while getting a no-decision in his start prior to that and lost a chance for a win in Atlanta on May 28 when the Braves’ Charlie Culberson hit a two-run walk-off homer in the ninth inning against reliever Seth Lugo.
“I think it’s frustrating no matter what, whether I’m pitching or not,” deGrom said. “We don’t want to lose and when we do lose games, it’s frustrating for everybody. Obviously, that’s not what we’re trying to do.”
DeGrom’s ERA is the best in the National League by nearly a half run and he is second with 106 strikeouts in 80 1/3 innings. Yet he has just four victories in 13 starts and has received a no-decision eight times.
Before the loss to the Yankees, deGrom had allowed one run or less in eight consecutive starts and he has done it nine times this season.
DeGrom is 5-3 with a 1.84 ERA in 14 career starts against the Braves, striking out 98 in 88 innings.
The 27-year-old former Stetson University shortstop has allowed just 11 hits and a run over 18 innings in his three no-decision against Atlanta this season and has 25 strikeouts to five walks.
Soroka, a first-round draft pick in 2015 Chuma Edoga Jersey , made it through just four innings in a loss to San Francisco after his impressive debut against the Mets, then began feeling shoulder discomfort while pitching 4 2/3 innings at Miami in his third start.
Soroka totaled just eight innings in his two minor league rehab appearances, but struck out seven over 4 1/3 innings for Gwinnett against Syracuse last week and the Braves decided he was ready to fill an open rotation spot against the Mets.
“He can go 85, 90 (pitches), which is all he would probably be doing anyway,” Snitker said.
The Tampa Bay Rays have activated slick-fielding shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria from the 10-day disabled list.
The 29-year-old Hechavarria had been sidelined since May 17 with a right hamstring strain. Hechavarria grabbed his leg after running out a single against the Angels.
Hechavarria was in Tampa Bay’s lineup Sunday against the New York Yankees. Prized prospect Willy Adames, who played nine games at shortstop while filling in for Hechavarria over two stints with the team, slid over to second.
Hechavarria went 2 for 10 with an RBI during a three-game rehab stint. To make room on the roster, infielder Christian Arroyo was placed on the 10-day DL with a left oblique strain following Tampa Bay’s 4-1 loss to the Yankees on Saturday.
This bobblehead included a bald eagle on his shoulder, a crazy moment that actually happened while working out in the outfield before a game this season in Minnesota. The video went viral.
Paxton allowed only two hits and struck out 11 in eight innings to lead the Mariners to their season-best seventh consecutive victory.
”Paxton enjoyed the moment,” Seattle manager Scott Servais said. ”It was National Pax Day. A holiday in Canada, the bobblehead and the fans were really into it.”
Paxton (8-2) had plenty of family and friends at the game from his hometown of Ladner, British Columbia.
”It was cool to pitch on Canada Day and have the bobblehead,” Paxton said. ”It felt good today. The fastball, curveball and cutter all were working.”
Edwin Diaz struck out the side in the ninth for his 32nd save. The Mariners are 26-11 in one-run games this season and 22-0 when Diaz enters the game with a one-run lead.
”As far as being valuable to our team, he has to be the top of the list,” Servais said about Diaz. ”He isn’t just getting it done, it’s also the efficiency of how he’s getting it done. When his timing is right, he’s really tough to hit.”
Kansas City rookie Brad Keller (2-3) also was tough to hit. He allowed six hits in eight innings. The only extra-base hit he allowed was a double by Kyle Seager in the seventh inning.
”He’s doing everything you want a starting pitcher to do,” Royals manager Ned Yost said. ”Complete game. He was fantastic. He’s out there attacking with his fastball, slider, throwing strikes and really commanding his pitch count.”
It was the first complete game of Keller’s career.
”After the game a few guys came up and said congratulations,” Keller said. ”I’ve never had one before and it’s pretty cool, but it’s frustrating (taking the loss). That’s tough lineup. A lot of good hitters over there. I tried to stay on the attack and not fall behind too much.”
The only run came in the second inning. Ben Gamel dropped a broken-bat single into shallow center to score Seager from second base. Seager singled to right before Ryon Healy singled to center.
”Late in the game he just dialed it up,” Servais said. ”Pax emptied the tank and let it rip. He had an overpowering fastball at the end. It’s pretty rare. There are only five to 10 guys in baseball who can do that and we’re lucky to have one of them.”
Royals: RHP Ian Kennedy, who experienced tightness on his left side during his start Friday, had his normal throwing day in the bullpen Sunday, but Kansas City manager Ned Yost did not say whether Kennedy would make his next scheduled start. Yost said RF Jorge Soler (fractured toe and placed in the 10-day DL June 17) is still on a six-weeks-or-so recovery, so it’s likely another four weeks before he would return.
Mariners: Manager Scott Servais said they will monitor RHP Felix Hernandez and his back stiffness over the next few days. Hernandez pitched five innings Saturday night and earned the victory (three runs and six hits) but struggled with back pain and wasn’t able to sit down in the dugout between innings. ”We’ll keep an eye on it,” Servais said. ”We have the off day (Monday) so he’ll get an extra-day off between starts.” … Servais said he was hopeful RHP Hisashi Iwakuma, who underwent shoulder surgery last September, would be back by now, but Iwakuma’s throwing was shut down again last week. ”He’s frustrated by that,” Servais said. ”The doctors still are optimistic he’ll get back (this season) but I don’t have any timetable for it.”
Royals: RHP Jakob Junis (5-9, 4.67) will make his 17th starts of the season Monday when the Royals return home to start a three-game series with Cleveland. Junis has allowed a major league-high 22 home runs over 96.1 innings.
Mariners: LHP Wade LeBlanc (3-0, 3.38) will make his 12th starts of the season Tuesday when Seattle starts a three-game series at home against the Angels. LeBlanc hasn’t lost a decision in his 11 starts and the Mariners are 8-3 in those games.
Joe Mauer didn’t receive any gifts for returning from a lengthy stint on the disabled list.
No, his reward was an immediate matchup against two-time Cy Young winner Corey Kluber.
”Yeah, welcome back, right?” Mauer said with a laugh.
The six-time All-Star returned to the lineup on Friday after missing 25 games with a strained neck and concussion-like symptoms sustained when he was injured diving for a foul ball last month.
And while facing Kluber might not be an ideal first step back, the struggling Twins, who have one of the league’s weakest offenses, were thrilled to have Mauer back in their lineup.
”It’s good for any manager to have a chance to put a guy like Joe’s name down there Ben Powers Jersey ,” said manager Paul Molitor, who had Mauer batting first against Kluber in the opener of a three-game series against the AL Central-leading Indians. ”Yeah, he’s in a good place, he’s excited to be here and we welcome him back. Hopefully, he can give us a little bit of a boost.”
The Twins came in seven games under .500 and batting just .238 as a team. They also entered the series with only three runs in the past 19 innings.
That’s not ideal against Kluber, who is 5-0 with a 0.76 ERA against the AL Central this season.
”Obviously, he’s one of the best in the game,” Mauer said. ”That’s the big leagues. You’re going to face the best night in and night out. It’s a tough matchup first game, but the one tomorrow (Carlos Carrasco) is pretty tough, too. I’m just excited to be back.”
Mauer has been symptom-free for a week. He went hitless in 10 at-bats over three games in a rehab stint with Triple-A Rochester, but the three-time batting champion feels ready to go.
”It’s been going good,” said Mauer, who was batting .283 with one homer and 11 RBIs when he got hurt. ”Obviously, I went down there and got in a couple of games and did everything I had to do to get back here. I’m excited to check off those boxes, get a couple of at-bats and play in the field for nine innings.”
Mauer said he didn’t have to make any diving stops in the field at Rochester, and that he won’t alter his game just because of the recent injury.
”My experience is when you try to do that you end up getting hurt,” he said. ”I got the full clear to go and I’m excited for that.”.

Of course you know that the total number on a contract doesn’t really matter. The only thing that really matter is guaranteed money and how that is structured. Adam Caplan has that breakdown for us:So if my understanding of NFL contracts is correct, that signing bonus money is spread out against the life of the contract for salary cap purposes. That means that if the Titans were to cut him in the last year of the deal, let’s say, they would have $2.5 million in dead money (assuming that the rest of the guaranteed money is in the first couple of years).Look, the Titans failed to add a guy that could help them this time last year. Did they pay more than you would have liked for a guy that hasn’t been a touchdown producer? Sure, but having more weapons is always better than having less weapons. Ryan Tannehill has a new team. Now the Miami Dolphins need a new quarterback.Miami traded Tannehill on Friday to the Tennessee Titans in a deal that also involved draft picks. Here, we have three things you should know about the former Hawkeye.EDTShareTweetShareShareThree things you need to know about new Buccaneers DE Anthony NelsonJeffrey Becker-USA TODAY SportsWith their fourth-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, the Buccaneers addressed their need for pass-rushing help by selecting Iowa defensive end Anthony Nelson. Plenty of fans are up in arms because Tampa Bay didn’t address the defensive line in the first two days of the draft. But with their first pick of day three, the Bucs went for a guy who has drawn comparisons to one of their current pass-rushers: Carl Nassib. It should be interesting to see how the new defensive coaching staff looks to use Nelson, as he was more of a 4-3 defensive end prospect. With the Bucs set to run a 3-4 the majority of the time, it should be interesting to see where the 6-foot-7, 271-pound defender fits in.The Bucs didn’t seem to think pass rush was as big of a need on day two as secondary help, so here we are, with the team likely hoping that Nelson can develop into a starting-caliber guy some time down the road. His size is what stands out most, but he has ability that, with some NFL coaching, could help him become a solid contributor. Here, we have three things you need to know about new Bucs defensive end Anthony Nelson.Unsurprisingly, Nelson was a two-sport athlete in high schoolAt 6-foot-7, Nelson has the length of a legitimate basketball player. So, it’s not a big shock that he once played basketball in addition to starring in football. At Waukee High School in Iowa, Nelson was a two-sport athlete. His play on the football field earned him six offers. He was a two-year starter, picking up 62 solo tackles, 29 tackles for loss, 12.5 sacks, 10 forced/recovered fumbles and 24 pass breakups. As a senior, he was an all-state selection, as well as the Class 4A Western Iowa Defensive Player of the Year. In addition to all of the success as a team captain on the football team, Nelson was also a captain of the Waukee basketball team. As a junior, he put up 14.1 points and 9.3 rebounds per game. Those are solid numbers, of course, as they put him right on the edge of averaging a double-double. Height can certainly benefit Nelson at the next level. Both his height and wing span should help him gain separation from blocks in addition to the threat of him being able to get his hands on passes at the line of scrimmage. Most guys are big, but Nelson’s measurables put him above almost every other player at his position in this class. His height is in the 98th percentile, his wingspan is in the 96th and his vertical jump is in the 87th. If the coaching staff can get him up to his potential, he could quickly prove to be a steal in the fourth round.Nelson has always had success in the classroomJudging by some of the Bucs’ day two picks, it seems like they’re trending toward picking some pretty smart players this year. Nelson is no different. According to his Iowa player profile, he received academic all-district honors in both his junior and senior years of high school His hard work continued to pay off at the University of Iowa, where he earned Academic All-Big Ten honors in 2016 Womens Lavonte David Jersey , 2017 and 2018. He was a First-Team CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2017 and a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar. He then received Second-Team CoSIDA Academic All-American honors in 2018. Such success in the classroom AND on the football field is likely a large part of what helped him earn leadership positions with the Hawkeyes. In 2017, he was one of four sophomores in the Leadership Group. Then, in 2018, he was one of five juniors named to the Leadership Group.Tampa Bays seems really keyed in on high-character guys in this year’s draft. The addition of Nelson is just the latest example of that. Whether he was in a small or large role at Iowa, Nelson producedAfter redshirting in 2015, Nelson stepped up in 2016. He only started one game, but appeared in all 13 of the team’s contests. He finished the year with 33 tackles and seven sacks. Those seven sacks were good for second on the team, and he only started ONE game. That’s pretty impressive stuff from the new Buc. In 2017, Nelson was just as solid. He put up 41 tackles and a team-leading 7.5 sacks. He had four pass breakups, two forced fumbles and a blocked field goal on his way to a Third-Team All-Big Ten selection by the league’s media. League coaches pegged him as an honorable mention for his performance as well. In his final year with the Hawkeyes in 2018, Nelson put up 45 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss (second on the team) and 9.5 sacks (second). He won the Team Hustle Award, earned a selection by the media for the All-Big Ten Second Team and also got third-team honors from Big Ten coaches.Consistency was a large part of Nelson’s career at Iowa, and he’s surely hoping to translate that repeated success to the NFL level with the Buccaneers. In each of his three years with the Hawkeyes, he put up 50-plus quarterback pressures, according to Pro Football Focus: With Drew Brees, Matt Ryan and Cam Newton as the quarterbacks that the Bucs see twice every year, some pressure from Nelson is much-needed. You can find Anthony Nelson on Twitter at @ANelly98. Take some time to congratulate him and welcome him to Tampa Bay.Buccaneers will be underdogs for the third time in four games come Sunday What do the oddsmakers over in Vegas think about the Buccaneers and Bears matchup this weekend in Soldier Field? So far this season, the Buccaneers have opened as underdogs every week. By the time kickoff came on Monday night, Tampa Bay was favored by three points. Once again, Tampa Bay will be underdogs this week, the Buccaneers are currently +3. In no way am I a professional gambler and in no way am I telling you to put your money with what I predict. This is really just for fun and something we here at Bucs Nation thought the readers would enjoy after sports gambling was legalized. For those that don’t know sports gambling, I will quickly go over the three main bets that are often placed. Also, the lines could always change and the website you use, could be different from mine. Betting with the spread: Currently, the Buccaneers are +3 . This means that if you were to take the Buccaneers with the spread, they could lose by 2 points and you’d win. If they lose by 3 points, it means you push, so the bet offsets. On the opposite side, if you took the Bears at -3 , they’d have to win by 4 for you to win the bet. Same as before, if you pick the Bears -3 and they win by 3, you push. Spread bets always have the same odds, which are -110. This means that you need to risk $110 to win $100. It’s surprising to see Chicago favored. I know it is in Chicago Womens Carlton Davis Jersey , but Tampa Bay, in my opinion, has the more talented roster and has looked better than Chicago this season, against much tougher opponents.Money line bets: As of late friday night, the Bears are -155. The Buccaneers are +135. In money line bets, all the team you bet on has to do is win. In terms of what the -155 means for the Bears, you’d have to risk $155 dollars just to win $100 because they are the favorite to win this game. The Buccaneers at +135, means that a $100 dollar bet would win you $135 dollars. Again, a bit surprising to see Tampa Bay at +135. Maybe it’s solely based on the way Khalil Mack has been playing.Over/Under bets: Again, no matter what way you pick, the odds in this case are -110. Vegas sports books currently have the over under at 46陆 total points scored . If you take the over, the Bucs and Bears must combined to score 47 points in order for you to win. Obviously, the under is 46 or under. So, now we get to the part where I try and beat Vegas. Last week, I picked Tampa Bay straight up (+115) (lost) and I also took the over 53 陆 (won). My current record on the season is 4-2. I will continue to keep a tracker all season of how I am doing, but a little side note, this is the best start I have ever had to the season in terms of trying to beat Vegas for Buccaneer games.A few things to consider: Tampa Bay, is 5-1 at the spread in its last six games. Personally, I love the spread this week. Tampa is 2-0 this season when they are underdogs at kickoff. Also, the total has gone over in 4 of the last 5 games Tampa Bay has played on the road. After reading that, you probably feel like the over is a pretty safe bet鈥?Not so fast, the under has hit in 5 of the last 6 games Chicago has played. Vegas really doesn’t make this easy. The final point, the Bears are 20-5 straight up (money line) in their last 25 games played at home against Tampa Bay.My picks: Buccaneers at +135 and the under 46 陆. These are my favorite picks of the year so far. Like I said earlier, Tampa Bay has the better roster and they have the better quarterback, whether it’s Winston or Fitzpatrick, which is the main reason I am so confident in them winning this game. One player can ruin this prediction and that’s Khalil Mack, but in the past, Demar Dotson has held his own against some of the league’s best pass rushers. He always shows up for the big test and I believe he will do so this weekend. In regards to the over/under, Chicago doesn’t have the best offense in the world and I think the Buccaneers defense can build off of their second half performance on Monday night. On the offensive side of the ball, I expect the offense to have a good week, but not a great week, like they have the first three games (outside of the first half monday). It should be a fun one, but i’m very confident in these picks.
Today we take a closer look at the reliable slot receiver and potential day 3 selection Hunter Renfrow of Clemson and see if he is a fit for the 49ers."Greetings Faithful! We are back with another scouting report! The final days leading up to the 2019 NFL Draft have arrived Womens Mike Person Jersey , and with it are countless amounts of rumors, mock drafts, and quotes from teams’ front offices and coaches. If your plate isn’t full enough, we even have plenty of quotes from players both active and retired on what their respective teams should do as far as selecting players.Photo by Sean M. Haffey/Getty ImagesToday, our focus an attention turns to the receiving position. The San Francisco 49ers are most likely going to take a receiver, perhaps even two before the conclusion of the draft. There is strong belief that the 49ers will select a receiver on day two of the NFL Draft. We have discussed and analyzed multiple receivers that the team can select on day two. Today, we are going to talk about a receiver the team can have on day three. His name is Hunter Renfrow. Just like Adam Humphries before him, Renfrow has the potential to be the next great Clemson slot receiver to find success at the pro level. Let’s learn about how the once walk-on turned two-time national champion can help the 49ers.Combine Results:40 Time: 4.59Bench Press: 7 RepsVertical Jump: 35.0”Broad Jump: 116.0”3 Cone Drill: 6.8020 Yard Shuttle: 4.1960 Yard Shuttle: 11.39Measurables:Height: 5’10”Weight: 184 lbs.Hands: 7 7/8”Arms: 29 1/8”Summary:From walk-on to national title clinching touchdown reception, Hunter Renfrow seems to have done it all in his four seasons for the Clemson Tigers. While names like Trevor Lawrence, Tee Higgins, and Travis Etienne receive the bulk of the national media attention on offense, Hunter Renfrow has slowly but surely put together a truly remarkable collegiate career. Renfrow is as reliable as they come at the receiver position with strong, reliable hands, rarely dropping a pass thrown in his direction. On multiple occasions Renfrow moved the chains for the Tigers on third down conversions, particularly in third and short situations. While Renfrow is not explosive or a burner, Renfrow does have quick feet and initial burst to create separation from defenders in zone and man to man coverage schemes. Has great bend, and is one of the best low-ball receivers in the nation. Due to his lack of size, there is a limit to his catch radius and window the quarterback has available to him. However, on multiple occasions Renfrow has mad acrobatic receptions over the top.Renfrow does have a limited route-tree. Renfrow primarily lined up in the slot, which is his natural position, and where he will find the most success at the next level. Performs his best in the short and intermediate levels on the field. Was almost never asked to run deep in Clemson’s system, however when he did http://www.49erslockerroom.com/authentic-garry-gilliam-jersey , he worked to get his hands on the football even in tight coverage as shown below.Vision and awareness with the ball in his possession are outstanding. Will shift and change direction, and often finds additional yards after the reception. Below, the entire South Carolina defense learns the hard way of trying to stop Renfrow after the reception.Overall, Renfrow has natural instincts when the ball is in his possession. His size and frame are going to be the biggest concern scouts and evaluators have. He is not at all a receiver who has size or plays physical. However, Renfrow plays to the level of his competition. Played his best football against Alabama in all national title games (2015, 2016, 2018) against perhaps the best defense in the nation. As far as clutch player goes, Renfrow might go down as one of the best in Clemson football history. He is also responsible for catching the biggest touchdown in Clemson history (See 2nd video below). His size and frame are a concern. However, Renfrow is a receiver who catches everything throw his way, who can shift and change direction to evade defenders, and in the right system can be dangerous at the first and second levels on the field. Renfrow can potentially be a late-round gem on the third day of the NFL Draft. Is Hunter Renfrow a fit for the 49ers?Photo by Streeter Lecka/Getty ImagesKyle Shanahan is the type of coach and offensive mind that can take essentially any receiver and put them in a position to get open and succeed at all three levels on the field. The head coach alone makes Renfrow and almost any receiver in this draft a fit in an offense that desperately needs multiple playmakers. Yes, the team has Trent Taylor, however after back injuries limited him in 2018 it might not hurt the team to invest in depth at the slot position. While Renfrow is undersized, what you are getting is a receiver who doesn’t drop the football, can move the chains, and can rise to the occasion when the lights are shinning their brightest. If the team is looking to address a day three pick at the position whether they use a day two pick or not, Hunter Renfrow can be a steal and late round gem for the team that selects him. Hunter Renfrow’s value is somewhere between the fifth and sixth rounds of the NFL Draft. What are YOUR thoughts on Hunter Renfrow? If the 49ers are looking to invest a day three pick in a receiver is Renfrow a good fit for the team? Please share in the comments below! Good morning folks, and a happy Sunday to you. Today marks the second of three consecutive Sundays during which the 49ers will not play, as they’ll face the New York Giants on Monday night. Despite the extended break since the Raiders game on Thursday night (a week and a half ago), the team has had difficulty recuperating, and will be missing several key players - again - come Monday night. Although he was active, and productive Tarvarius Moore Jersey White , during week 9, Pierre Garcon has been ruled out for tomorrow’s game. He’s currently dealing with a knee injury which has kept him off the field for multiple games this season. However, the injury report does not make mention of his shoulder injury, which is certainly welcome news. As the 49ers enter their bye week after MNF, hope springs eternal that Garcon will heal up with the extra rest, and come back ready to play during week 12. The injury report is rounded out with news that Reuben Foster (hamstring) and Jaquiski Tartt (shoulder) will both miss their second consecutive games. Considering the frequency and impact of injuries that the 49ers have dealt with this season, I’d be inclined to support benching presumed starters if they’re borderline healthy - with no playoff contention to worry about, protecting their health from aggravation is definitely the smart move. As with Garcon, hopefully these two will take advantage of the upcoming bye week to heal up.The 49ers face a struggling Giants squad, who, despite their pitiful record, boast a fair amount of top-end offensive talent. Jaquiski Tartt and Reuben Foster will be replaced by Tyvis Powell and Malcolm Smith, respectively, who will surely have their hands full dealing with the dynamic play of RB Saquon Barkley & all-world WR Odell Beckham Jr. Pierre Garcon’s snaps will be replaced by some permutation of rookie Dante Pettis and Kendrick Bourne, and there’s a high likelihood that Trent Taylor will finally find himself back in the mix.Week 10 preview | Garcia, 4th & 9Week 10 injury report | Chan, NBC Sports Bay Area | Biderman, Sac BeeKyle Shanahan urges defense to stay relentless | Chan, NBC Sports Bay AreaNo decision yet on moving game due to fire smoke | Chan, NBC Sports Bay AreaKyle Shanahan’s remarks on Matt Breida | Chan, NBC Sports Bay Area

TORONTO (AP) — Maple Leafs goalie Frederik Andersen will sit out Saturday night’s game against the New York Islanders because of a groin injury. The team said Andersen is day to day Erik Karlsson Jersey Womens , and announced hours later it had acquired goalie Michael Hutchinson from Florida for the Maple Leafs’ fifth-round pick in the 2020 NHL draft.Andersen last played on Dec. 22 against the New York Rangers, stopping 25 shots in a 5-3 win. He played in 102 games for Winnipeg from 2013-18 where he was 43-39-11 record with a .910 save percentage and a 2.65 GAA.The Maple Leafs said Hutchinson will report to the Marlies. NEW YORK (AP) — From the moment Mark Messier came to the New York Rangers in 1991, he knew he was expected to lead the team to its first Stanley Cup championship in more than 50 years.“There was no escaping the pressure of 1940,” Messier said about the last year the Rangers had won the Cup. “Coming here and understanding what the Original Six franchise was and this history, there was no escaping it. The pressure was real, from the fans, the organization.”Messier accomplished the task in 1994 as the Rangers ended their 54-year title drought by outlasting the Vancouver Canucks in seven games in the Stanley Cup Final. Honored with a parade in the Canyon of Heroes in lower Manhattan that June, the players from that team were back at Madison Square Garden on Friday night to celebrate the 25-year anniversary.“When you are in New York, not a day goes by that you don’t run into someone that you get reminded Patrick Maroon Jersey Womens , get smiles,” Adam Graves said before the ceremony that preceded the Rangers’ game against Carolina. “Back then you never thought you’d be impacting the way we have been, it is very special.”From general manager Neil Smith, coach Mike Keenan, to stars Messier, Brian Leetch, Mike Richter, Craig MacTavish and Stephane Matteau, each were introduced one by one to a rousing ovation. The only absences from the group were Alexander Karpovtsev, who was killed along with most of the KHL Lokomotiv team in a plane crash in 2011, and Brian Noonan, who was said to have a prior commitment.Messier said he’s been approached by countless people over since who thanked him and claimed to have witnessed the Game 7 win in New York.“I didn’t realize Madison Square Garden holds 2 million people Tyler Bozak Jersey Womens ,” he joked, “because I’ve talked to 2 million people over 25 years that were here that night. That’s been interesting. It never gets old … never get tired of speaking with people on the street or in the subway or trains, or taxi drivers that recognize the guys or myself and thank us for the Cup.”Messier is also remembered for his famous for his declaration before Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals against New Jersey when, with the Rangers trailing 3-2 in the series, he guaranteed the team would win Game 6.Messier said he was simply trying to let his teammates know he believed in the team.“I really felt we could go into New Jersey and win, and I wanted the guys to know it,” he said. “The papers the next day were what they were. It wasn’t going to motivate New Jersey any more.”Leetch said the team chuckled when they saw Messier’s Game 6 guarantee in the papers, and it didn’t change anything about their preparation for that game.“Just was kind of a light-hearted thing to remember that we’re in New York, everything gets magnified,” Leetch said. “One comment gets turned into a guarantee. It was something for a little bit that we had a laugh about”.Messier then backed up his words with a hat trick in the third period to rally the Rangers to a 4-2 win.“He’s always done things his whole career,” Leetch said. “He’s been a part of a lot of big moments and rises to occasions in big games, but the fact he did that here in New York when it was on the front and back pages Chad Johnson Jersey Womens , we still shake our heads at it that he was the guy to do it in that game.”The Rangers then won Game 7 on Matteau’s goal in double-overtime.They lost the opening game in the championship series against the Canucks despite having a big advantage on shots, then won three straight to get to the cusp of ending their long drought before being forced to the deciding game.“I remember saying we should have won this series four straight,” Messier said. “Coming back and losing Game 5 and 6 and then we’re back in another Game 7.”Then, Messier came through again, giving the Rangers a two-goal lead that stood as the winner to deliver the franchise and the city the long-awaited title he had been brought in to get.“When Mark came across the ice to celebrate the Stanley Cup victory and handed it to me and I looked it over, the first thing that came to my mind is I can’t believe how difficult this trophy is to win,” said Keenan, who said he is doing well after his treatment for prostate cancer last year. “As now time passes, 25 years later, that endorsement of how difficult it is stands even more in my mind.”Difficult indeed, as the championship in 1994 remains the Rangers’ only title in the last 79 years.
ANAHEIM http://www.officialcanucks.com/authentic-adidas-sven-baertschi-jersey , Calif. (AP) — In a matchup of teams with eight-game losing streaks, Colin White was able to provide some much-needed relief for the Ottawa Senators.White’s 11th goal at 1:34 of overtime lifted Ottawa to a 2-1 victory over the reeling Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday night. While the Senators got off to a good start on their three-game road trip, the Ducks have lost a franchise-record nine straight — surpassing an eight-game skid in October 1996.“It felt great to get that push at the end and finally come up with a win,” said White, who scored his second game-winning goal of the season.Mark Stone brought the puck into the zone and found White near the net, and he slid the puck past Anaheim goaltender John Gibson.“I saw (Stone) skating. I was in front of him so I slowed down a little bit for him and he made a great play so I could tap it in,” White said.Ottawa coach Guy Boucher said the plan was to play with patience and keep it a low-scoring game. The Senators trailed 1-0 after two periods Alex Tuch Jersey Kids , but Bobby Ryan tied it midway through the third.“We feel like we were in a lot of games lately and we let them go away in the third period and get away from us. Tonight we just stuck with it,” Ryan said.Anders Nilsson stopped 32 shots for his fourth win in 15 games. Five of the Senators’ last six games have been decided by one goal, but this was the first time they came out with a win.“We got the bounce and in the other games we didn’t get the bounce,” Boucher said.Jakob Silfverberg had Anaheim’s lone goal, and Gibson made 28 saves. The Ducks have played an NHL-leading 13 overtime games at home and are 5-6-2. They are also 0-2-3 during a six-game homestand, their longest of the season.“Right now we’re playing at the end of our sticks and our shots might not be as well-placed as before,” Silfverberg said. “It’s definitely something we’re working on.”The Ducks have scored two or more goals only three times and are 3 of 31 on the power play during their losing streak despite having the edge in shots in five games.“We seem to be snake-bit around the net. We’ve had amble chances http://www.officialknightsproshop.com/authentic-adidas-brad-hunt-jersey , but haven’t been able to find the back of the net consistently,” coach Randy Carlyle said.Silfverberg opened the scoring at 8:52 of the first when he took a pass from Brandon Montour and put a one-timer past Nilsson from just outside the right faceoff circle for his 11th of the season but only second in the past 11 games.Ryan tied it at 9:23 of the third period when he got the rebound of Gibson’s save on Dylan DeMelo’s shot and was able to chip it under Gibson’s left pad for his eighth of the season. WASHINGTON (AP) — Devante Smith-Pelly got up from his seat. The Washington Capitals forward had heard the unmistakably racist taunts from fans from inside the penalty box. As a black hockey player Paul Thompson Jersey Womens , he knew exactly what they meant by yelling, “Basketball, basketball, basketball!”“It’s just ignorant people being ignorant,” Smith-Pelly said. That scene unfolded in Chicago in February, 60 years after Willie O’Ree broke the NHL’s color barrier and paved the way for more minorities to play the sport and reach its highest level. O’Ree is being inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on Monday for his pioneering career, and yet incidents like the one Smith-Pelly went through show how much more progress needs to be made, in a league that’s 97 percent white and beyond.“It’s come a long way, but there’s still a lot of things that still need to change,” Edmonton defenseman Darnell Nurse said. “That just comes through minorities as a group working together to try to eliminate those things from this game.”Those things just keep happening. In 2011, Philadelphia forward Wayne Simmonds had a banana thrown at him during a preseason game in London, Ontario. In 2012, then-Washington forward Joel Ward was the subject of racist social media posts after he scored a game-winning playoff goal.In 2014, then-Montreal defenseman P.K. Subban was the subject of racist social media posts after he scored a game-winning playoff goal.In April, Detroit prospect Givani Smith was subjected to threats and racial taunts and messages after a junior game in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. His team had a police escort the next time they went to the rink.“(O’Ree) had to go through a lot, and the same thing has been happening now, which obviously means there’s still a long way to go,” Smith-Pelly said. “If you had pulled a quote from him back then and us now, they’re saying the same thing, so obviously there’s still a long way to go in hockey and in the world if we’re being serious.”Through his work as an NHL diversity ambassador over the past 20 years, O’Ree has tried to work toward more inclusion and better minority representation. He is eager to tell kids at YMCAs, Boys & Girls Clubs and schools that hockey is another sport they can play.USA Hockey and Hockey Canada don’t keep participation statistics by race, though there are fewer than two dozen black players currently on NHL rosters. The NHL celebrates “Hockey is for Everyone” month each season and quickly condemns racist behavior.“A lot of it’s basically on your parents and how people raise their kids,” said San Jose forward Evander Kane, who acknowledged being the subject of racist taunting as the only black player on his minor league teams in Vancouver. “You can have all the awareness that you want, but at the end of the day, it’s really up to the individual and how they act and how they want to treat other people.”O’Ree, 83 Troy Brouwer Jersey Womens , still remembers how he was treated in the ’50s as hockey’s Jackie Robinson. He did his best to drown out the noise by listening to his brother Richard.“I heard the jeers and some of the racial remarks, but it kind of went in one ear and out the other,” O’Ree said. “He told me, ‘Willie, names will never hurt you unless you let them.’ He said, ‘If they can’t accept you for the individual that you are, just forget about it and just go out and do what you do best and don’t worry about anything else.'”Nurse said black players still have to worry about racist jeers and remarks.“I had a lot growing up and my brother had the big one too last year,” said Dallas forward Gemel Smith, Givani’s brother. “How we were raised, nothing really bothers me. That stuff doesn’t really get to me and things like that. My dad always taught us just to try to close it out, block it out.”Like Smith-Pelly, Simmonds is quick to say racism isn’t an issue unique to hockey or sports in general. His solution is a zero tolerance policy, which is what happened to the four fans in Chicago who were thrown out and banned from all home games by the Blackhawks.“I think what could be done to keep these types of incidents from happening would probably be to ban those people who are doing those lewd acts,” Simmonds said. “I think if you set a strong example right from the start, you won’t have too many people acting like clowns.”Commissioner Gary Bettman, who is going into the Hall of Fame with O’Ree as part of the class of 2018, considers it important to make clear to fans and players what’s expected and what’s not tolerated and said: “Even if it’s only one incident, it’s one too many.” Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said creating and cultivating an inclusive environment and building diversity are significant league priorities. There has been incremental progress. In the aftermath of Smith-Pelly’s incident, fans in Chicago raised $23,000 to donate to the Fort Dupont Ice Rink in Washington, helping hundreds of children.“When you see the reaction and the way that people rally around moments like that and try to make a positive out of it, I think that’s definitely a step in the right direction,” Nurse said. For some players like Seth Jones, the son of former NBA player Popeye Jones, hockey has been a safe place. The Blue Jackets defenseman said he has so far never been on the receiving end of race-based taunts or messages and said, “I was just like everybody else playing hockey, which is what everyone wants.”Most black players haven’t been that fortunate. And while Jones is optimistic that people can change, Smith-Pelly wasn’t sure exactly how that will happen.“It’s tough,” he said. “I don’t really know a plan to stop it. That’s how people are.” NEW YORK (AP) There is usually another guest at the table when Gary Bettman and his wife http://www.officialavalanche.com/authentic-adidas-sven-andrighetto-jersey , Shelli, go out to dinner with other couples during the NHL playoffs.Friends come to accept the glow of the TV screen set up so Bettman can keep an eye on games, ready to go from enjoying a nice meal to running a multibillion-dollar business and back again. The commissioner of a storied league with 24 teams in the United States and seven in Canada doesn’t put work on hold for life or vice versa. When his 11-year-old grandson, Matthew, wanted to hang out with him in Tampa during All-Star weekend, he brought him along for meetings.”They all blend together because I’m never off,” Bettman said. ”It’s all part of what I do and who I am.”For 25 years, Bettman has overseen the growth of the NHL from $437 million in annual revenue to nearly $5 billion, guiding the league into and out of work stoppages and expanding hockey’s reach to places that never seemed a fit for the fastest game on ice.The Stanley Cup Final opens Monday in Las Vegas, where Bettman had a guiding hand in the expansion process that yielded the Golden Knights and led to the most successful inaugural season in league history. When he was there in November 2016 for the unveiling of the team name, Bettman was booed by the crowd and could not have cared less.”No, no, keep the booing,” he told the crowd. ”That proves you’re now an NHL city.”Once perhaps an unlikely leader for a game with its roots north of the border, the 65-year-old lawyer from Queens who got his start in the NBA has become one of the most powerful and long-lasting influences in professional sports. More than two decades into the job, Bettman still feels energized by the thrill of work – and the sugar supplied by dark chocolate Milky Way candy bars doesn’t hurt.He isn’t going anywhere, either.”I think he’s the best that we could do,” said Jeremy Jacobs, the Boston Bruins owner and board of governors chairman. ”I mean, there are things that might irritate you from time to time about him. But you know where his heart and soul is, he’s always interested in the game, the improvement of the game.”It hasn’t always been pretty. Bettman has had a role in three lockouts, the relocation of five franchises, has repeatedly denied any link between head injuries and the degenerative brain disease CTE, and recently refused to allow NHL players to go to the Olympics after doing so five times. Confident in his decisions and willing to accept the ramifications to his reputation and legacy, Bettman has earned respect – sometimes begrudged – and made some enemies while serving longer than the other three major sports commissioners combined.”He’s a force, so he’s not going to roll over because somebody thinks it’s a good idea,” said John Collins, a former NHL chief operating officer. ”He’s very principled and he sticks up for his principles. And those principles could be business principles or they could be just kind of moral principles and he’ll fight for that. That’s the way he lives his life http://www.officialcanadiensprostore.com/authentic-adidas-phillip-danault-jersey , and that’s the way he runs the league.”Part of Bettman’s work involves keeping 31 ownership groups and markets on the same page. Former Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment President and CEO Richard Peddie said Bettman bringing almost every owner into the league has its benefits.”They’re all there because Gary ultimately blessed them, so I think they always have some kind of IOUs,” Peddie said. ”I don’t mean that in a disingenuous or unfair way. But he was the gatekeeper, so he has that going for him.”Bettman, who was NBA general counsel under then-Commissioner David Stern and a senior vice president before starting at the NHL on Feb. 1, 1993, orchestrates things in such a way that there’s rarely public dissent. Washington Capitals owner Ted Leonsis has watched how Bettman builds a united front among owners.”He’ll pre-brief and sell some of the key owners, if you will, and he backchannels and he’ll literally call and brief every owner personally on a subject so that when you come to the meeting, you’re briefed, you’ve asked your questions,” Leonsis said. ”Because he puts in the work and he has the data and his competence is not questioned in any way and he does have the data, he’s able to land the planes, if you will, with efficiency.”Bettman acknowledges some events during his tenure were not of his making. To this day, he insists moving the Quebec Nordiques to Colorado and the original Winnipeg Jets to Arizona had to be done, and that the 2004-05 lockout that wiped out an entire season was necessary to ensure the long-term health of the league.”There are things I wish might not have happened,” Bettman said. ”Work stoppages are a good example. The fact is I knew what we needed, and we had to get it. And if it took a long time to ultimately convince the Players’ Association that this was in everybody’s best interest, I wish it could’ve happened sooner, but it didn’t.”There are some in hockey who can’t forgive Bettman for the lockouts, most recently one in 2012-13. There are others like Peddie who’d rather consider them part of an entire body of work that includes overseeing expansion into the Sun Belt.”It’s putting hockey where it hasn’t traditionally been,” deputy commissioner Bill Daly said. ”That’s proven successful. … I think his legacy of having franchises there and putting hockey in nontraditional markets and making it relevant in nontraditional markets kind of exceeds the business success of the teams.”The deaths of enforcers Derek Boogaard and Bob Probert brought CTE and hockey to the forefront, and the NHL is currently facing a federal lawsuit from more than 100 former players who allege it had the resources to better prevent head trauma, failed to properly warn players of such risks and promoted violent play. In a July 31, 2015, deposition, Bettman said: ”There’s no medical or scientific certainty that concussions lead to CTE.”Bettman said the NHL was a leader on concussion studies, testing and solutions as far back as the 1990s. He also said he believes the lawsuit has no merit.”People can embrace that position Womens Craig Smith Jersey , understand it, dismiss it – that’ll be individual opinions,” he said. ”But I have to do what I have to do on behalf of the game, and it starts with player safety being a priority.”Bettman is paid more than $9 million annually and with that is willing to take the brunt of responsibility for the NHL’s good, bad and ugly. He doesn’t have too many fans at the Players’ Association, but owners line up behind him based on his work in raising franchise values, negotiating U.S. and Canadian TV deals and steering the sport through trouble.”I think the league is lucky to have had him as long as they’ve had,” said Collins, who worked under Bettman for nine years. ”That role for any sport is a really tough one and it’s really tough when you’re in it for a long time because it’s inevitable that you collect a lot of dents.”The dents don’t keep Bettman up at night, but he works so much that he’ll sleep at most 6 hours on the weekend and often much less. When he returned home at 2 a.m. from a playoff game this spring, he walked 13-year-old golden doodle Lola and 4-year-old Teddy before bed, slept under three hours and postponed working out with a trainer to leave the house at 6:15 for an 8 a.m. television appearance.”I don’t get a lot of sleep and I don’t need a lot of sleep,” Bettman said in his office overlooking Sixth Avenue that has a table-top hockey game, books of the sport’s history and plenty of family photos. ”There are probably certain days where people in my family will think I have narcolepsy, because if I sit down I might fall asleep for five or 10 minutes. But what I do is energizing, so that keeps me going. And I eat a lot of candy.”Bettman and Daly spent two hours earlier this week poring over a draft of the 2018-19 schedule while having Chinese food for lunch – a less glamorous part of the job than handing out the Stanley Cup each June but part of the gig.So is planning for the future, even though Bettman is under contract through 2022 and shows no signs of slowing down. Daly, who’s 54, thinks Bettman will work long enough that owners should look to someone younger as the next commissioner, but his boss is more than comfortable handing him the reins if anything went wrong.”What if God forbid I get hit by a bus?” Bettman said. ”Well, I’ve built an organization that, if need be, I’d hope they’d miss me somewhat, but if need be could carry on.”—
The 2019 NFL Draft will take place in Nashville Earl Campbell Jersey , and the Titans will be picking 19th in that draft. Of course it sucks to fall one game short of the playoffs because you obviously don’t get to go to the postseason, but you also end up with something like the 19th pick in the draft. We all know how much Jon Robinson likes to move around in the draft, so there is a decent chance that they don’t end up actually picking 19th.Of course we will have plenty of time to talk needs and players that fit those needs in the draft in the coming weeks. I am really excited to have Justin Melo on staff this year. He has already been killing it with player interviews, and he will have a ton of great content leading up to the draft. Here is the good news and bad news for Tennessee. Titans Injury Report (10-10-2018)PlayerPositionInjuryWedThuFriGame StatusPlayerPositionInjuryWedThuFriGame StatusGood NewsThe big news is that Wesley Woodyard returned to practice for the first time since going down with a shoulder injury against the Eagles. He did not practice all last week, so getting in a limited session today qualifies as a new development and an encouraging sign that the Titans might have one of their defensive leaders back on the field against the Ravens. Woodyard is a very important part of this defense so getting him back would be huge. Dennis Kelly got in a full practice for the first time since coming down with the mystery injury that has held him out for the last four weeks. Kelly said that he’s put back on most of the 15 pounds that he lost and is starting to feel more like himself. He’s not officially cleared for Sunday yet Ben Jones Jersey White , but this is certainly a good first step towards him returning.Bad NewsThe worst news of today’s injury report was that Taylor Lewan did not participate in practice with the foot injury he suffered against the Bills. That being said, reporters did say that he was walking around without a boot or anything special on his foot in the locker room which is a good sign. I also take it as a good sign that the Titans did not make a move to add a tackle to the 53-man roster this week. The Titans desperately need their star left tackle back in the lineup. Will Compton was an addition to the injury report as he missed practice with a hamstring injury. This could explain the addition of Robert Spillane to the 53-man roster. If the Titans think Compton might miss some time with the hamstring, Spillane would be a good fit to take on his special teams responsibilities and provide some depth at inside linebacker. However, Spillane also popped up on this report with a knee injury that it sounds like was suffered during practice. If the knee injury is serious, the Titans may be forced to dip back in to the practice squad reserves for another inside linebacker Womens DaQuan Jones Jersey , likely Nigel Harris. As expected, starting safety Kenny Vaccaro remains out. He’s unlikely to return before Week 7 and my guess is that they probably give him through the Week 8 bye to get his elbow healed.Ravens NewsRavens Injury Report (10-10-2018)PlayerPositionInjuryWedThuFriGame StatusPlayerPositionInjuryWedThuFriGame StatusThe Ravens had 7 players miss practice today, but most of these are maintenance days for veteran players. Eric Weddle, Terrell Suggs, Brandon Carr Warren Moon Jersey , and John Brown are all highly likely to play and be 100% for this game. Anthony Levine probably goes as well since he played last week. Anthony Averett’s status could be in doubt, but he’s more of a depth corner behind their talented starters anyway. The Ravens are going to be as close to full strength as you’ll see for an NFL team 5 weeks in to the regular season on Sunday.
Storylines to watch during the Buccaneers at Dolphins preseason matchup The 2018 preseason finally gets underway for the Buccaneers on Thursday night with an in-state matchup in Miami against the Dolphins. The preseason opener gives us our first taste of Tampa Bay football since December Womens Noah Spence Jersey , but it won’t give us a lot of definitive answers to the team’s many questions. Even still, there are plenty of storylines to follow.1. How will the Bucs handle their quarterbacks?Tampa Bay has a tricky quarterback situation on its hands right now. With starting quarterback Jameis Winston set to miss the first three games of the regular season due to suspension, backup Ryan Fitzpatrick needs to get his share of reps with the first team offense. Throughout training camp, head coach Dirk Koetter has given Fitzpatrick the majority of time with the starting offense, while mixing Winston in with all three groups. But now, it’s time for real game action. Koetter noted earlier this week that Winston will probably get around a quarter, but what about Fitzpatrick? Considering his importance for the first three games of the season, will we see him for just a series or two?How Koetter handles his quarterbacks will be worth keeping an eye on. It’s likely that he’ll keep things open and adjust to what the game calls for. Fitzpatrick needs to get in rhythm with the starters, but Tampa Bay needs him healthy. The same goes for Winston. There’s a fine line to walk. Knowing the Buccaneer fan base, opinion on Koetter’s handling of the situation will be split, no matter what he does. 2. What kind of early production will the Bucs get from their new-look defensive line?Part of the busy offseason for general manager Jason Licht consisted of a complete overhaul of the defensive line. Last year, the Bucs were dead last in sacks. Pressure was hard to come by, which created problems for the secondary. Because of the line’s ineffectiveness, something had to be done. Clinton McDonald, whose contract expired, was freed up to go elsewhere. Robert Ayers Jr. and Chris Baker were both released, which created space for newcomers. The free agency period brought Beau Allen and Mitch Unrein aboard to help out Gerald McCoy on the interior of the line. The team then signed Vinny Curry and traded for Jason Pierre-Paul to shore up the edge, adding to a group that already featured Noah Spence and William Gholston. The group has a brand new look, which has already raised expectations for this season. How quickly will all of these guys come together? That should be an interesting group to watch on Thursday night, whether it’s the starters or backups. Considering it’s week one of the preseason, we may not see guys like McCoy Ronald Jones II Jersey White , Pierre-Paul and Curry for all that many snaps. But there appears to be a lot more depth up front for the Bucs heading into this season, so seeing how the second-teamers play may be just as fun as watching the starting group. 3. How will the rookies respond to their first NFL action? When it comes to Tampa Bay’s 2018 draft class, there’s a lot to be excited about. Defensive tackle Vita Vea, the team’s first round pick, won’t be available on Thursday night due to a calf strain. Even with him on the sidelines, there are more than enough rookies to keep an eye on.On the offensive side of the ball, there’s second round pick and running back of the future Ronald Jones II. Additionally, Alex Cappa is set to get his first professional reps up front at the guard position. He might be a work in progress, but he has a lot of raw talent to work with. Former Penn wide receiver Justin Watson is another intriguing prospect, one who should get a good number of looks from the second and third team quarterbacks. And when it comes to preseason, undrafted rookies shouldn’t be overlooked. Keep an eye on those guys, like former Duke running back Shaun Wilson, who has received a lot of praise throughout camp.Despite Vea missing time, the defense has its own share of youngsters getting their first NFLsnaps on Thursday. The secondary is full of them, with M.J. Stewart, Carlton Davis and Jordan Whitehead ready to kick off their careers. Linebacker Jack Cichy, a sixth-rounder, is a guy who could be a sleeper to make the team’s 53-man roster. He is making his way back from an ACL injury, so Thursday’s game could be a big step for him.4. Does Tampa Bay finally have a kicker? The Bucs have had their fair share of issues with the kicking game in recent years. Those struggles have been well-documented. From Kyle Brindza to Roberto Aguayo to Nick Folk, there have been far too many wide lefts and wide rights. The team hopes to get rid of those issues this year.Tampa Bay signed Chandler Catanzaro in free agency, giving him $3.75 million guaranteed. If that guaranteed money didn’t already solidify him as the kicker for 2018 http://www.buccaneerslockerroom.com/authentic-chris-conte-jersey , the Bucs waiving rookie Trevor Moore, his only competition, on Tuesday probably did. Kicking in training camp, as Bucs Nation’s Steven Beck outlined here, doesn’t hold much weight. What matters is how a kicker performs when the pressure gets turned on in game action. Now, preseason action won’t necessarily measure that completely, but it would be encouraging to see Catanzaro remain cool, collected and accurate on Thursday night. 5. Who will take the early lead in their respective position battles?Training camp practices and preseason games are all about position battles. Whether it’s a battle for a starting job or simply a roster spot, every team has competitions to work through. There don’t appear to be as many open spots for the Bucs this year, but there are still guys fighting for attention. At the running back position, Peyton Barber and Ronald Jones have the No. 1 and 2 spots held down firmly. But Jacquizz Rodgers, Charles Sims and undrafted rookie Shaun Wilson are all going to be in the mix for that third spot. The top four wide receivers are also set, though we could see some shuffling between the three guys behind Mike Evans. Chris Godwin could overtake DeSean Jackson’s spot on the outside, but even if he doesn’t, he might slot in at No. 3 ahead of Adam Humphries. The offensive line has its own share of battles to work out, although injuries are messing with that at the moment. The secondary has the majority of the defense’s position battles. Rookies Carlton Davis and M.J. Stewart are already putting pressure on Vernon Hargreaves III and Ryan Smith. With strong play in the preseason, could they work their way into starting roles by the opening weekend of the regular season? It may only be week one of the preseason, but it’s Buccaneer football and it’s back. Excited? Well, drafting a punter makes me happy. Spending a fourth round pick on the position? It raises some question marks.Any time a special teams player is draft before the sixth round, eyebrows are raised. When it happens in the fourth round, there are usually strong responses. The 49ers needed a punter, so you can’t fault filling said need. But could they have landed Wishnowsky later? In the phone call to Wishnowsky Joe Montana Jersey , head coach Kyle Shanahan told him they were worried they would not be able to land him. He did not offer any more specifics, but it would suggest they thought someone else was interested in Wishnowsky in the fourth. The 49ers spent the 110th overall pick on Wishnowsky, and the next punter off the board was Stanford’s Jake Bailey to the New England Patriots at No. 163.The Patriots sent a seventh to the Philadelphia Eagles to move up four spots to land Bailey. After the draft, John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan both acknowledged the Patriots and others were likely interested.Lynch: “We had a number of teams that we felt were interested in adding a punter and felt like he had distanced himself, and the fact he kicks off and is a very good holder, as well. So, all those things fit into the puzzle.”Shanahan: “That’s a hard thing to figure out. Everyone knows he’s the best punter in the draft, and when is he going to go, and you always want to take that as late as possible, so you feel the same way going in the fourth. You’d love to do it in the seventh, but I promise you we wouldn’t have gotten him if we tried to do it in the fifth. That’s why the Patriots traded up to take next guy in the fifth.”Lynch said the team loved what Wishnowsky brought to the table, and easily led the field as the prospect they wanted. This raises another question. Is the punter position sufficiently valuable enough that you need to invest a fourth round pick in the best player if you think he is that much better. He has gotten some comps Seattle Seahawks All Pro punter Michael Dickson. If Wishnowsky proved to be as good as Dickson, is he worth the pick? Or is the drop-off to Bailey or another worth spending that fourth on another need?A great punter is valuable in flipping field position, but fourth round value? The 49ers were 18th in total points Deion Sanders Jersey , and if the offense improves, they very well could slide further down the list. Fewer points ideally further decreases that value. You know I love a great punter as much as anybody, but I won’t pretend spending high picks on a punter is not a bit of a head scratcher. And when you add in the context of the 49ers history the past two years, it raises questions. Oscar Aparicio offered a solid take on overpaying. The 49ers decision to draft a punter in the fourth round is not exactly an outlier in their decision-making. They’ve spent big on positions that traditionally are not invested as such. You can make individual arguments for each decision, but until the team actually starts winning some football games, the totality of the decisions will keep us scratching our heads in the short term. This could pan out where the 49ers have one of the best punters in the league for the next decade — and I’d love to see that. But it is reasonable to raise questions about the decision-making process. A fight broke out in San Francisco today resulting in three players getting ejected. It all started when Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky ran, slid down and then was hit late by 49ers defensive back Marcell Harris near the Bears’ sideline. That infuriated the Bears, and a big fight broke out involving many players on the Bears’ sideline and most of the 49ers’ defense. It took the officials nearly 10 minutes to get everything straightened out, and they consulted with the officiating headquarters in New York before deciding to eject three players for the post-play fight: Bears receivers Anthony Miller and Josh Bellamy, and 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman.Harris easily could have been ejected again, as it was his late hit that started the whole thing, and it looked like there were other players mixing it up who might face league discipline. Eventually order was restored with the Bears leading 14-9 late in the fourth quarter.
Since the Seattle Seahawks lost to the Dallas Cowboys in the Wild Card game of the NFC Playoffs Tedric Thompson Jersey , there has been a lot of discussion about play calling and scheme. This included Pete Carroll and Brian Schottenheimer stating that the issue was that the team was unable to convert on third down in the loss to the Cowboys. Much of the past week has seen a debate rage about why the Seahawks were unable to convert on third down, but that’s a debate that has been ongoing for the past week and is likely to continue for much of the offseason. Thus, let’s take a moment and look at some raw third down data, courtesy of Bik Nizzar (@bik650) and the Pro-Football-Reference.com play index. Let’s get to third down data to compare the Seahawks to the four teams that are left remaining in the postseason. And then he dove into the average distance to go on third down. Including specifically looking at third and 1 compared to other teams. So, even in those situations where the offense created a 3rd & 1, which is as manageable as a third down can be, the Hawks were exactly league average at getting a first down when they needed only a single yard on third down. However, at this point taking a step back from the data seems warranted. Basically Womens Bobby Wagner Jersey , the argument for the running game is that it is safer and that it is likely to result in third and manageable. Except, what both of those last two tweets have shown is that the Seahawks average distance to go was exactly league average and the team converted the easiest to convert third downs at exactly league average. If the Seahawks running game is so potent, powerful and efficient at creating third and manageable, shouldn’t it have generated efficiencies in these categories that are well above league average? If that is the goal of the run game, why were the Seahawks no better than middle of the pack at both getting to third and manageable? Why were they no better than league average at converting 3rd and 1? So, in short, the run/pass debate is going to continue to rage, and the analytical side is going to continue to argue its position while former players and coaches argue their side. As with everything Womens D.J. Fluker Jersey , in time this debate is likely to be solved on the field, and so in the meantime it’s a whole lot of people yelling back and forth at each other in both real life, as well as in the void that is the internet. Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said Monday he didn’t consider removing quarterback Dak Prescott from a game that meant nothing in the standings or for seeding purposes. Yet, the Cowboys made running back Ezekiel Elliott inactive.“He’s been banged up a little bit with different parts of his body,” Garrett said on 105.3 The Fan, via Jon Machota of the . “We just felt like it was the right thing for him to not be a part of it yesterday. I do think he’ll be fresher going forward.”Elliott won the rushing title despite not playing as Rams running back Todd Gurley also sat out Week 17. Giants rookie Saquon Barkley ended up finishing second to Elliott, who had 1,434 yards.Elliott played 890 snaps this season and had a career-high 381 touches this season Byron Maxwell Jersey , including 304 rushes.Elliott is rested and ready for Saturday night’s wild-card game against the Seahawks, and the Cowboys go into the practice week healthy. Everyone other than defensive lineman David Irving (ankle) should participate in Tuesday’s practice in “some way, shape or form,” Garrett said.Defensive lineman Tyrone Crawford (neck) likely gets limited work.Linebacker Leighton Vander Esch left Sunday’s game after being kicked in the shin, but the injury isn’t expected to affect his availability for this week’s game.
BUFFALO Womens Tuukka Rask Jersey , N.Y. (AP) James van Riemsdyk thought about the possibility of back-to-back hat tricks. Then again, five goals over two nights and a career milestone will do just fine.Van Riemsdyk had two goals and an assist to lead the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 5-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday night. It came after a three-goal performance one night earlier in a 6-5 shootout win over the Dallas Stars.”Our line has been playing good for a while now, maybe not getting just rewarded with some of the bounces as we would’ve liked,” van Riemsdyk said. ”So it’s nice to see our line get some bounces in the sense of being able to capitalize on some chances.”Connor Carrick, Tyler Bozak and Patrick Marleau also scored for the Maple Leafs, and Curtis McElhinney stopped 38 shots. With the win, the Maple Leafs picked up their third consecutive win following a four-game losing streak.”I thought we played a pretty solid game for a back-to-back situation,” McElhinney said. ”It was a big win for us.”Van Riemsdyk set the tone early by picking up Toronto’s first two goals and hitting a career-best in the process. He opened the scoring from a bad angle 3:39 into the game as he spun at the end line and flung the puck between Lehner’s legs, which deflected off the goalie’s pad into the net.Van Riemsdyk then set a new single-season career-high for goals three minutes later with his 31st. Left all alone in the Sabres’ end Zdeno Chara Jersey , he took his time before firing a wrist shot high to the glove side.”He’s obviously been real hot here since the trade deadline,” Toronto coach Mike Babcock said. ”I don’t know if it’s you get to concentrate on hockey and not think about the other things but he’s been good for us. He’s obviously got real good hands around the net and an important player for us.”Sam Reinhart and Jason Pominville scored for Buffalo, and Robin Lehner finished with 33 saves. The Sabres were unable to repeat their surprising performance against the Maple Leafs from March 5, when the struggling Sabres picked up an upset 5-3 victory.”We just can’t allow ourselves to get behind like that early in the game,” Sabres coach Phil Housley said. ”It was a tale of two games. Not getting rewarded two points for this effort, that hurts.”The Kings tied the game at the 19-minute mark of the third on Kempe’s second goal of the game and seventh of the season after Los Angeles had pulled Quick for an extra skater.“You’ve got to play 60 minutes,” Rangers coach David Quinn said. “I thought as the game went on we got more sloppy. NEWARK Brandon Manning Jersey Womens , N.J. (AP) The New Jersey Devils retired career scoring leader Patrik Elias’ No. 26 jersey in a ceremony before their game against the New York Islanders on Saturday night. The 41-year-old former Czech forward played his final game in 2016, finishing a 20-year career in New Jersey with two Stanley Cup championships and most of the team’s scoring records.”For someone growing up in Eastern Europe, in a communist country, there’s no way I could have ever dreamed of this day,” said Elias, whose eyes welled with tears during his speech that was interrupted several times by chants of ”Paddy! Paddy!”Always a fan favorite, Elias walked through a section of the stands at the Prudential Center before taking his place on the ice with his wife Cam Ward Jersey Womens , two daughters, former and current teammates and the franchise’s owners and management. The podium on the ice was shaped as a puck with the No. 26 on it, and it was by surrounded by other super-sized pucks with the same number and two trophies, the Stanley Cup and The Prince of Wales trophy, presented to the Eastern Conference winner.Elias played on four conference champions, scoring the winning goal in Game 7 against Philadelphia in 2000.Elias is the first European player to have his number retired by the Devils, and the first forward. Defensemen Scott Stevens (No. 4) Matt Hunwick Jersey Womens , Scott Niedermayer (No. 27) and Ken Daneyko (No. 3) and goaltender Martin Brodeur (No. 30) also had their jerseys retired. All four were in attendance with Brodeur, of course, getting the biggest ovation. It was appropriate that Elias’ No. 26 was raised to the rafters at the Prudential Center against the Islanders, the team he played his most games against, 91, and had his most points, 86.Elias is the Devils’ leader in points (1025) Jeff Skinner Jersey Womens , goals (408), assists (617), points in one season (96), points in a playoff season (23) and game-winning goals (80), .— TORONTO (AP) — The Toronto Maple Leafs rode the subway two stops to city hall for an outdoor practice at Nathan Phillips Square.Auston Matthews, Jake Muzzin and Connor Brown took the honors Thursday in the Maple Leafs’ 3-on-3 outdoor tournament, with fans lining up eight or nine deep to see the hockey stars.“It was a blast Jaycob Megna Jersey Womens ,” center John Tavares said. “Obviously, to be right in the heart of the city with the skyline and obviously amazing support from our fans. GLENDALE http://www.officialkings.com/authentic-adidas-dustin-brown-jersey , Ariz. (AP) — Lyndsey Fry could have continued playing hockey. She had a stellar collegiate career, a degree, an Olympic silver medal placed around her neck, so playing professionally was a logical next step. The grueling rehab from hip surgery it would take to get back to an elite level was not all that appealing. Nor was playing in a women’s professional hockey league on a less-than-livable salary — or being away from her family.Fry could have gone into the financial world, maybe work on Wall Street. She had a Harvard education, so there was an expectation to get a “Harvard” job. It certainly would pay well. That wasn’t the right fit, either. She didn’t have a passion for it.Fry coveted more than money and fame. She wanted to pay back a community that helped a little girl in Arizona with plastic skates strapped onto her shoes transform into one of the world’s best hockey players. Now working with the Arizona Coyotes, she’s doing just that.“I never would have dreamed I would be in this role,” she said. “I just kind of hoped to be able to help where I could, coming back to the Valley. To be in this role and really having some leverage to do what I set out to do has been really, really incredible.”Growing up in Arizona, Fry had limited opportunities to play hockey, particularly against other girls. In her new role with the Coyotes, she will make sure other hockey-mad girls like her will get the chances they deserve.Fry returned to the Valley of the Sun to earn an MBA at Arizona State and worked with the Coyotes as an instructor at various clinics. She also teamed with Coyotes director of amateur hockey development Matt Schott to run the Small Frys, a continue-to-play program for girls 6-12 who have gone through the organization’s Little Howlers program.Fry took on a bigger role with the Coyotes in November, when she was hired as a brand ambassador and special adviser to president and CEO Ahron Cohen. Fry’s primary focus is to grow hockey around the state, particularly women’s hockey, and to assist Cohen in engaging the hockey community in Arizona.“The thing that was instantaneously obvious to me was her unbelievable passion for growing hockey and being a part of this community,” Cohen said. “From that moment Jake Muzzin Jersey , I said we have to find a way to get Lyndsey involved with us here. She just naturally radiates positivity and people just want to talk to her.”Hockey has already seen a rise in the desert. In 1996, the year the Coyotes arrived from Winnipeg, there were about 2,100 registered youth and adult hockey players. The state had three rinks, two in Phoenix, one in Flagstaff.Hockey has boomed in Arizona over the past five years, increasing 109 percent to more than 8,600 players, making it the No. 1 state for growth in the NHL. Arizona is third for youth hockey growth over the past five years, up 88 percent to 4,500 players, and is No. 1 in girls’ hockey growth, up 152 percent to nearly 800 players.Fry should only boost those numbers. She and Toronto Maple Leafs star Auston Matthews are Arizona’s greatest hockey success stories, players who overcame long odds to reach the pinnacle of their sport. By returning to the Valley of the Sun, Fry gives girls hockey players an up-close look at what’s possible with a little work and dedication.“She’s very inspiring for a lot of kids out there,” Cohen said. “The two greatest success stories in terms of hockey in Arizona are her and Auston Matthews. It’s pretty cool to see kids look up to her and I’m hopefully five and 10 years from now we have a whole lot more kids like Auston Matthews and Lyndsey Fry playing at the highest level because of the work that Lyndsey and this Coyotes organization has done.”Fry had a long road to the top.Inspired by the 1990s “The Mighty Ducks” movies, she first started skating with plastic skates strapped to her shoes. She played a year of roller hockey and switched to the ice when a rink was built in her hometown of Chandler.Fry was forced to play against the boys at a young age because the number of girls players could nearly be counted on one hand. She held her own against the boys and when it came time to play at the elite girls level, there wasn’t much competition, so she ended up playing for a team in Colorado.Fry made the trip to Colorado every two weeks for games and practices Jeff Carter Jersey , staying with families in the area, including former NHL player Pierre Turgeon. She became good friends with Turgeon’s daughter, Liz, and made a vow at their final game together that they’d play again with each other on the U.S. Olympic Team. The reunion never took place. While Fry was a freshman at Harvard in 2010, Liz Turgeon was killed in a car crash, devastating her family and her close friend. Fry nearly quit hockey, but the help of friends and family — and vow with Liz — pulled through and dedicated herself to the sport they both loved.“I just kind of called on her memory to help push me through,” she said.Fry pushed herself into the sport’s brightest spotlight, becoming a key member of the U.S. Olympic Team that took silver at the 2014 Sochi Games. On the podium in Russia, her thoughts veered toward the road behind her and what lie ahead.“It was like a movie,” she said. “I kept having these flashbacks of all the people who helped me get to that moment,” she said. “Most of those people were from the Arizona hockey community and I knew that I wanted to give back to that.”Now back home, Fry is making the most of it, using her skills on and off the ice to push hockey in Arizona forward. ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) Gerard Gallant made Shea Theodore skip a shift. He’s not making him walk the plank for two rough games.Theodore’s struggles are a major reason the Golden Knights trail the Capitals 2-1 in the Stanley Cup Final going into Game 4 on Monday night in Washington. The talented, young defenseman has been on the ice for four of the Capitals’ past six goals in the series and was primarily responsible for two in Vegas’ Game 3 loss Saturday night.”Did Shea do something real bad? He plays the game like everybody else,” Gallant said Sunday in a passionate defense of Theodore. ”He made a couple mistakes, they ended up in the back of our net. A lot of guys make mistakes in hockey games and they don’t end up in the back of the net. Shea’s a 22-year-old kid who I love. He’s a great player. He’s going to be a star in this league.”Theodore doesn’t need to be a star, but he needs to be better for the Golden Knights to have a realistic chance of coming back in the Cup Final. In Game 3 alone http://www.officialkings.com/authentic-adidas-jonathan-quick-jersey , he made an ill-advised decision that sparked an odd-man rush on Evgeny Kuznetsov’s goal, and committed a brutal turnover that led to Devante Smith-Pelly’s goal that sealed it for Washington.Trailing by two in the third period, Gallant sat the offensively gifted Theodore for more than three minutes after that giveaway. Gallant expects his whole team to be better with the puck, and Theodore knows that certainly includes him.”Personally, not a good game,” Theodore said. ”I’ve got to be better all over the ice and definitely recharge tomorrow and get back at it. You have to have a short memory on these type of things, and it’s a seven-game series.”The series won’t get to seven games if Theodore’s mistakes continue to haunt the Golden Knights. In addition to the blunders that cost them two goals, arguably Theodore’s worst play Saturday night came when he lollygagged down the ice on the power play and got outraced by Capitals defenseman Matt Niskanen so badly goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury had to come out of his net and wound up taking a tripping penalty. That cost Vegas a big opportunity to score on the power play and cut the deficit in half.”We all make mistakes,” Fleury said in French. ”He must forget it.”That’s the message from veteran defense partner Deryk Engelland, who teammates notice has been a calming and positive influence on Theodore. Engelland talked to Theodore after the loss and again the morning after to reassure him and reinforce some positive thinking.”He’s young, you’re going to have mistakes,” Engelland said ”It’s a new day. We’ve got to get ready for Game 4 and you’ve just got to tell him to simplify, make the simple, easy play that he’s done all year for us, and just get back to our games.”Teammates have been just as quick as Gallant to praise Theodore for his strong play this season, and there’s no doubt he’s a factor in the expansion team getting this far. But at the most critical stage of the Golden Knights’ journey, he has been close to his worst and knows it.”I just have to be much better than I was,” Theodore said.—More Stanley Cup coverage: https://apnews.com/tag/StanleyCupFinals—
on the Titans (excluding Marcus Mariota) Without hesitation Eddie George Jersey , Marcus Mariota is the most important player on the Tennessee Titans. Without him, the Titans are not a playoff team in 2017. Since quarterback is the most important position in football, for this article we’re doing things a little differently. This will take a look at who I consider to be the five most important non-quarterback pieces for the Titans. The order of the countdown will go from five to one, and remember that this is just my opinion. So with that said, let’s get the countdown started.5. Dion LewisChristopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY SportsYou could insert Derrick Henry into this spot and I would not disagree. But I feel that Dion Lewis is a little more important going into the 2018 season because he adds a new dimension to the Titans offense.Dion Lewis is more than just a third down back. He’s a guy you can trust to churn through tiny gaps on run plays, making him a quality runner in addition to a quality receiver. And as a receiver, you have all sorts of uses for Lewis, which greatly enhances your game plan if you’re an offensive coordinator. Lewis has the quickness to give him the edge while stemming his routes, the vision to find the tiniest of holes and exploiting them (let’s be mature, here), and is also a quality blockingback. Simply put, Lewis adds all sorts of options to the Titans offense, hence his spot on this list.4. Kevin ByardChristopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY SportsAfter experiencing a breakout sophomore year (where he was named First Team All-Pro by the Associated Press), free safety Kevin Byard has cemented himself as the bread and butter of the Titans secondary.Byard led all safeties in both interceptions (8) and pass disruptions (16). While some of his interceptions came on a stroke of luck, Byard’s coverage skills, ball skills and vision all took a big step up, and he established himself as arguably the best young safety in football. His interception on Deshaun Watson in week 4 is a perfect example of his ball skills and ability to undercut the target.Byard is earning a little less than $4 million from his rookie contract. To get his high level of play from that amount of money is tremendous value for the Titans, and I’m convinced he still has more to show in 2018. 3. Delanie WalkerJay Biggerstaff-USA TODAY SportsDelanie Walker was a home run free agent signing for the Titans back in 2013, and that was done on a four-year $17.5 million contract. He’s given Tennessee extremely high tight end production as a result, putting up 356 receptions for 4,156 yards and 26 touchdowns, while being named to three consecutive Pro Bowls.Walker’s hands took a step down in 2017 Austin Johnson Jersey White , but he was (still) just about the only receiver the Titans had that could consistently create separation. His chemistry with Marcus Mariota has also been noted, as they’ve connected for 12 touchdowns since 2015. In a new scheme, Walker should have a bounce back year. He’s 33 years old, but he’s also managed to stay relatively healthy, and I don’t see why he can’t have another Pro Bowl caliber season.2. Taylor LewanChristopher Hanewinckel-USA TODAY SportsThe highest paid offensive lineman in the NFL, Taylor Lewan, simply put, is the bread and butter of the Titans offensive line. Lewan’s refined technique as a pass blocker has helped give Mariota many clean pockets, and he is equally as impressive in the run game. As the left tackle to a right-handed quarterback, Lewan protects Mariota’s blind side, making it easier for the quarterback to adjust to pressure and survey his reads down the field. Tennessee’s offensive line simply isn’t the same without Lewan, but then again that’s pretty obvious. 1. Jurrell CaseyKirby Lee-USA TODAY SportsWith exception to Marcus Mariota, no player on the Titans is more important than star defensive tackle Jurrell Casey. You can line up Casey as a 3-tech and he’s phenomenal. You can put him in the A-gap, B-gap or C-gap and he’d overwhelm the lineman on the opposite side of the ball. He’s extremely explosive off of the snap, can control the speed of his jabs with relative ease, and he’s a monster as both a pass rusher and run stopper. The reason I have Casey as the most important non-quarterback on the Titans’ roster is simple. The Titans have made an effort to haul in younger defensive talent, snagging Harold Landry and Rashaan Evans from the same draft, drafting cornerback Adoree Jackson in 2017, and signing Malcolm Butler from New England. Instead of being a defense intent on rebuilding, with Jurrell Casey, the defense suddenly looks like it can be a top 15 unit. Casey makes the jobs of those around him on the defensive front much easier because of his versatility. He’s been rewarded by his high quality play with three consecutive Pro Bowl appearances as well, a testament to his value for Tennessee’s defense. So Womens Curley Culp Jersey , those are my five most valuable non-quarterbacks on the Titans. My mom and I sat down and talked about it for a long time. I always promised her that I would be the first male in my family to graduate from college. I made that promise to her before I even stepped foot on campus at Tennessee. The majority of us collegiate athletes go to school year round and I had the opportunity to graduat early. I graduated back in December. We sat down and discussed my options. I kept my promise to her. I graduated. That was always my number one goal. Now that I’ve achieved that, I get to focus on my next goal, which is playing football at the next level. I realized that staying for one more year would have given me an opportunity to showcase my reliability as a versatile, three-down linebacker. We recently went through a coaching change. I sat and thought about things for a long time. I decided to turn pro.JM: Your Pro Day went down recently. How did it go?QS: It went really well. I didn’t hit some of the numbers that I was hoping too. I did well overall. My numbers lined up nicely against the other players at my position in this draft. As an athlete and competitior, you always want to do better. Things went well overall. I spoke to like five scouts afterwards who told me they were impressed with my position work. They were excited to watch me in person and communicate with me afterwards. I’m excited to see how the rest of the process plays out.JM: Which teams did you chat with afterwards?QS: I spoke with the Eagles and 49ers immediately afterwards. The Falcons liked what they saw. They invited me to take part in their local day the following week. The Titans were in attendance. I spoke to them for a while. Some teams contacted me after my Pro Day as well.JM: That’s awesome. The Falcons clearly liked what they saw. Any more visits or workouts coming up?QS: I’ve been in touch with the Jaguars. They’re supposed to bring me in for a private workout. I’m just in the process of confirming that now.JM: How would you describe your skillset?QS: I describe myself as a three-down linebacker. I can play in space and I can play all three linebacker positions. We went through three different defensive coordinators in my time there, so I’m well versed in multiple schemes. We played as a 4-3 defense in my first two seasons and I spent the majority of my time at the WILL spot. Coach [Jeremy] Pruitt made the switch to a 3-4 defense last year and I played all three positions for him, the MIKE, WILL and something we call the money ‘backer which is the third down linebacker. I can rush the passer, play in space or cover tight ends. That’s where I excel at.JM: You briefly touched on the coaching changes in Tennessee, are they in good hands with Jeremy Pruitt?QS: Yeah, they definitely are. Having been around him for a couple of months, I learned a lot from him in a short amount of time. He taught me things both as a football player and as a man. He’s installing a culture that’s going to win. They’re gonna be a winning program in the next couple of years. This upcoming fall is obviously huge for them. They just picked up a new offensive coordinator as well. Good changes are happening there.JM: In closing, why should an NFL team use one of their draft picks on Quart’e Sapp?QS: I can play all three downs at the next level. I’m what teams are looking for in today’s linebacker. I’m very versatile and physical. I’m mentally tough and smart as well. I’m excited for what’s ahead.

The receiver, who faced criticism in years past for drops, brought in 62.3% of the passes thrown his way which is the highest catch percentage of his career. So, you could say Evans did well. And PFF recognized this by ranking him 56th among all players in the league. The 56th place finish places Evans as the tenth-best wide receiver in the league coming in behind names like DeAndre Hopkins (Houston Texans) and Michael Thomas (New Orleans Saints) while finishing in front of guys like T.Y. Hilton (Indianapolis Colts) and JuJu Smith-Schuster (Pittsburgh Steelers). It’s a solid finish considering how the season transpired, and for a team with no representation on the NFL Top-100 before the season, having one on this list is a positive. In his press conference, General Manager John Lynch made it clear that ultimately, Bosa was the player they coveted most, stating:“I think kind of the evolution of the process, two players really in our minds separated themselves from the pack, and it was Bosa and it was Quinnen Williams, and those were the players, and I think ultimately we had those guys ranked extremely evenly. Then you kind of look at where your team has the biggest need, and [...] Nick [...] was a piece that we still could use, another edge guy.”Clearly, Bosa’s talent and the 49ers desire to add another piece on the edge elevated Bosa to the top prospect on their board. Given that, one would expect Bosa to be a comfortable fit in the 49ers’ defense, which is certainly the case. Bosa is, without a doubt, a superb player. He’s got the athletic abilities and polish that suggests he can come into the league and be a Pro Bowl type player straight out the gate. With his refined hands, superb power, excellent (if slightly inconsistent) burst off the snap combined with understanding of his game and attack, Bosa has all the tools to dominate in every phase of the game, as explicitly stated by Kyle Shanahan, who said:“He plays the run well. His best strength is rushing the passer, but no he can play all three downs and play in all situations.”This latter point is perhaps the crucial thing that makes Bosa so valuable to the 49ers - he is capable of playing in ALL situations. From what I have seen, Bosa will be able to play in every down and distance scenario and every package that the 49ers use: outside of resting, he will never have to leave the field. How will that likely play out? And what will it mean for other players along the defensive line?Base packagesThis is one of the most common fronts the 49ers use - their base 4-3 under front. In Seattle this was (and could still be) called ‘Frisco’, with the LEO in a 9-tech, a 3-tech, a 1-tech, the strong side end aligned in a 5/6-tech and the SAM linebacker on or just off the LOS. In these sorts of fronts, Bosa could play at either end, though I would expect him to play at weak side end most of the time, where he would compete for time with Dee Ford. Deforest Buckner would likely be the first choice 3-tech & Solomon Thomas would compete with Arik Armstead to play 5/6-tech. Either could also play the 3-tech spot, whilst second year players Kentavius Street & Jullian Taylor could also play either spot.DJ Jones would likely man the nose tackle position, but they could look to use players who are better penetrators there.Another common base under front that the 49ers use is a front the Seahawks called ‘Boston’. Note the position of the LEO, head up with a tight end. The strong safety will align close to the LOS to have contain responsibilities and the LEO will have to handle a possible tight-end - tackle double team, at least initially. This is the type of package that Dee Ford would likely struggle in. Bosa could certainly play the LEO role here. Given motion can cause the 49ers to shift from the previous ‘Frisco’ front into ‘Boston’, it’s feasible that we may not see Ford in base defence that often... In ‘Boston’, the defensive end spots would be filled by players capable of handling double teams - Bosa, Thomas, Armstead, Taylor, Street or even Ronald Blair. The 49ers also run some over fronts in base. This was in part due to moving away from a defensive line type player at SAM to more of an off-ball linebacker type. Bosa would probably compete for snaps at LEO here, who aligns in a wide 9 alignment most commonly. He could play the big end spot as well however. In this instance, because of the way the Lions align, Thomas (aligned at LEO), is actually head up over the tight end, whilst Arik Armstead at big-end is in a wide 9. Bosa could handle either spot - it’s again important to note that motion can see the responsibilities and alignments change - so having an end who can comfortably play lined up over a tight end/tackle or outside is a massive bonus.Occasionally http://www.49erslockerroom.com/authentic-joe-staley-jersey , the 49ers would also run bear style fronts. Bosa would be quite capable of playing at either end of the formation, but he would most likely play the 6-tech spot Solomon Thomas is playing over the tight end. In this sort of front, Thomas, Armstead, Buckner, Taylor & Street would probably compete to play the 3/4i-tech positions. We have also heard that with the arrival of new defensive line coach Kris Kocurek, the 49ers will be introducing more wide 9 elements to their playbooks. Here is a base package utilising the wide 9 from Miami last year. Bosa could play at either end spot, likely with Dee Ford opposite. On the inside, with the onus on penetration to stress offensive linemen, Arik Armstead, DeForest Buckner, Solomon Thomas and Kentavius Street are the most likely candidates to man the two tackle spots.Nickel/dime packagesThe 49ers tended to use similar fronts in these packages - but they barely used dime at all last year. Their investment at linebacker suggests they might continue to shy away from dime if Kwon Alexander & Fred Warner remain healthy. Either way, the team will be in these the vast majority of the time. The 49ers’ most common nickel look: An over front, with the big end in a 5 or 6-tech (depending on if there is an in-line TE) and a 3-tech to the strong side; then a 1-tech and the LEO on the weak side. The LEO will align in a wide 9, but as the second image shows, can have to align inside a TE. Bosa could play either end spot, and I would think he would be used flexibly at either end. He may actually play strong-side end more in nickel to allow Dee Ford onto the field at weak side end. Solomon Thomas, Arik Armstead, Kentavius Street and Jullian Taylor would reduce inside to compete at the defensive tackle spots. Armstead has shown he can play as a nickel nose tackle. The others could probably do so as well.A more unusual nickel look that was used against 20 personnel vs the run heavy Seahawks. Notice how the defensive ends are both aligned inside the outermost player on the offensive line (a TE and an extra tackle respectively). Bosa could play at either end spot however without issues. It’s also interesting to note that Armstead is the nickel nose tackle and Thomas is the 3-tech. With the wide 9 elements this season, getting players with explosive penetration abilities at every spot is important.Another more unusual nickel look, utilised often vs the Rams. Of some interest is the fact that the apparently genius innovation of Matt Patricia & Bill Belichick to play a 6-1 front against the Rams was being used by the 49ers in week 7. In this front, I would expect Bosa to play as one of the stand up OLBs, with Dee Ford opposite him at the other end.The wide 9 style fronts the 49ers already use in nickel/dime in obvious passing situations. Bosa would most likely play at defensive end opposite Dee Ford. He could potentially reduce inside to play 3-tech, but the 49ers have plenty of bodies there! Finally, a wide 9 with a 1/2i tech and a 3-tech to be used in nickel but not in obvious passing situations. Again, Bosa would play defensive end (probably to the TE side) with Dee Ford opposite.ConclusionSo it’s fair to say that Bosa has a spot in every 49ers package, more so than Dee Ford and perhaps every other 49ers player not called DeForest Buckner. His development will be fascinating to follow, but one senses he has all the tools as well as the right situation to be a force as a 49er.And my dream picks for Rounds 2 & 3...Round 2: DK Metcalf - I know Matt Maiocco reported the team allegedly did not mesh well with Metcalf when they interviewed him at the Combine, but I would be really keen to draft the monster from Ole Miss. With his combination of size, speed and ability to beat press, Metcalf is the perfect X-iso receiver. He can run the go routes, deep overs, deep comebacks and digs that Kyle Shanahan dials up, demanding attention from a corner and a safety whilst clearing out space for the 49ers’ other receivers underneath. He doesn't need to be a superb route runner himself - the 49ers have multiple other receivers who can run post-corner-posts, pivots etc - he’d be the man that would terrify defences in other ways. Plus his perceived agility issues are overblown.Round 3: Jachai Polite - You’re probably seeing a theme... I’m not sure Polite’s potentially poor interview at the Combine will prevent the 49ers drafting him if he’s there in round 3. Another player with immense talent (covered more in depth here), for a third round pick the upside is simply too good to pass up. With Polite, Ford and Bosa, the 49ers would have a stable of EDGE rushers who will terrify opposition teams.49ers WR Marquise Goodwin not expected to play in Week 5 The San Francisco 49ers are not expected to have wide receiver Marquise Goodwin active in Week 5 vs. the Arizona Cardinals, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. This is not surprising news given the team’s decision on Saturday to activate wide receiver Victor Bolden from the suspended list.Goodwin suffered quadricep and hamstring injuries last week and was limited in practice this week. The team was already going to be without rookie Dante Pettis, so this leaves them without two significant contributors. Pierre Gar莽on, Trent Taylor, and Kendrick Bourne will be the active regulars, and Bolden will join Richie James to round out the wide receiver depth chart.Bolden earned a roster spot last season primarily as a kick returner. He will likely see some wide receiver snaps against the Cardinals, but James is the guy who could get more wide receiver work of the two. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said that if Goodwin could not play, “Richie James will definitely be involved.” James was a dynamic option in the preseason, but has only been active once this season. It would appear the 49ers starting wide receivers for Week 5 will be Gar莽on and Bourne on the outside, with Trent Taylor in the slot. That would leave Bolden and James rotating into a variety of roles.
seem to be a magnet for officiating controversies. The Fail Mary game is 2012 against Green Bay Bradley McDougald Jersey , K.J. Wright‘s illegal batting of a ball out of the end zone against Detroit in 2015, Richard Sherman‘s non-roughing the kicker against Buffalo in 2016 and Bobby Wagner‘s illegal leap to block a field goal try against Minnesota in 2018 all have come on Monday night. And yes, Wagner’s blocked field goal against the Vikings was an illegal play. With the Seahawks holding a 6-0 lead with 5:46 left to play, Wagner leaped over Vikings linemen Danny Isidora and Rashod Hill to block the 47-yard field goal try. While Wagner’s block was legal in that he leaped from the line of scrimmage without a running start from the second level, the fact that he placed his hands on the shoulders of linemen Shamar Stephen and Jarran Reed to help aid his leverage to clear the line was not.The rule book states the following aspect as being illegal: “Placing a hand or hands on a teammate or opponent to gain additional height to block or attempt to block an opponent’s kick or apparent kick, or in an attempt to jump through a gap to block an opponent’s kick or apparent kick.” NBC rules analyst and former head referee Terry McAulay said the play was an illegal one as well.Wagner made it clear they knew you could leap over the line from a spot on the defensive line of scrimmage.“We know the rule change where you can’t run and block the field goal, but if you start on the line you can go and block the field goal,” Wagner said. “If they were ever on the right hash, we were going to call it. It just so happened to be in the fourth quarter around five minutes (to play) that they were on the right hash. You can’t jump over the center but if you got hops you can make it over anybody.”As far as whether he leveraged himself off his teammates in order to clear the line, Wagner said it’s not on him to make that call.“That’s really up for them (the officials) to decide. It’s not really on me,” he said. “Even last time when I jumped over last time they said it was legal. But I think not a lot of people are aware of the rules and aware of the changes. So there’s a loop-hole in there where if you start on the line you can jump over. I’m not stressing about that. I made the play. They called what they called. There’s times in games where things happen all the time so I’m not stressing on it. It was a big block. We’re going to definitely take it and it was amazing.”Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer said he wasn’t sure what happened on the kick.“I don’t know,” he said. “They didn’t tell me. I just asked if I could challenge and they said no.“Quite honestly Chris Carson Jersey , I didn’t see it. I didn’t see what happened. I was told what happened, but I don’t know. You’re not supposed to be able to pull guys down if that’s what they did.”The penalty would have been a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, which would have given the Vikings a first down at Seattle’s 14 1/2-yard line with half the distance to the goal enforced. Instead, Russell Wilson scrambled for 40 yards two plays later and Chris Carson scored on a 2-yard carry to push the Seahawks’ lead to 14-0 with three minutes to play.A flag was thrown initially by the umpire as it appeared he believed the jump over the line came from depth, which would have been illegal as well. However, head referee Brad Allen said it was a legal jump over due to it coming from the line of scrimmage. The leveraging by Wagner on the play was the aspect seemingly missed.Wagner had previously jumped over the center to block a Chandler Catanzaro kick against the Arizona Cardinals in 2016. Though that maneuver would be illegal today, he cleanly hurdled the long snap to make that block.Wagner said they practiced this specific block play four times in practice this week and his legs didn’t have quite as much life in them when he was called upon 55 minutes into Monday night’s contest.“You didn’t expect to get that many plays before you try to jump over the pile so when I did it in practice I was pretty fresh,” Wagner said. “But in the fourth quarter with five minutes left after all the games we’ve played I was just making sure I got over and didn’t fall because I’m pretty sure you guys would have caught it.” Less than 24 hours into the negotiating period for players who are set to become unrestricted free agents, we watched as a number of high profile players agreed to deals and are set to be signed at..."Glover Quin, SafetyWith so many players available at safety, it’s difficult to settle in on single player for the team to consider. Even if the volume helps to devalue the position, remaining players like Ha Ha Clinton-Dix and Tashaun Gipson could be out of the Seahawks price range.Finding a free agent at the position who has created more turnovers than Earl Thomas (8 forced fumbles Tre Madden Jersey , 18 interceptions) was difficult. But, Glover Quin (7 forced fumbles, 19 interceptions) is one player who has been able to keep pace with Thomas during his six seasons with the Detroit Lions. At 33 years old, he has yet to miss a start since his rookie year with the Houston Texans in 2009, and could help provide some veteran leadership for Tedrick Thompson and Delano Hill. With his salary and bonuses, Quin made $4.8 million last season with Detroit. Brandon Marshall, LinebackerFrank Clark made it known that he’d prefer to see Kwon Alexander come and join the Seahawks. However, Alexander proved to be out of reach of being affordable after he reached at agreement to join the San Francisco 49ers.Denver Broncos linebacker Brandon Marshall will likely be a less expensive option after fighting through injuries two of the last three years. The Broncos declined an option that would have paid him a $6.5 million base salary in 2019 and $7 million in 2020. When healthy, Marshall has combined for more than 100 tackles in three of his last five seasons. He turns 30 near the start of the 2019 season. Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY SportsJames Carpenter, Guard After finishing his rookie contract in Seattle, Carpenter signed a 4-year $19 million contract to join the Jets. Now that his contact is up, Carpenter likely won’t be returning to the New York now that the Jets have traded for Oakland guard Kelechi Osemele. He performed well in the first two years of his contract George Fant Jersey , but is now coming off shoulder surgery that shortened his 2018 season. The ideal player to bring in at this spot would be Los Angeles Rams guard Rodger Saffold. The Rams recently declined the 2019 option for their veteran center John Sullivan, and a departure by Saffold would leave them with two holes on their offensive line to attempt to fill. Jerome Miron-USA TODAY SportsCorey Liuget, Defensive TackleThe strength of the draft could bring down the demand for some veteran run stopping interior defenders. Driving down the potential contract offers for Liuget is that he’s also is coming off a season shortened by injury as well as a four-game PED suspension. The 6-foot-2, 300 pounddefensive tackle started just three games last season, the fewest of his career since he was drafted 18th overall by the Chargers in 2011. In spite of the injuries and the suspension to start the year, Liuget was the Los Angeles Chargers Walter Peyton Man of the Year nominee in 2018Kim Klement-USA TODAY SportsKai Forbath, KickerForbath finished the 2018 season with the Jacksonville Jaguars after he was signed to replace an injured Josh Lambo. In the final three games he was perfect in his three extra point attempts and only missed one of his five field goal attempts -- a 56-yarder with four seconds to go in the first half against the Miami Dolphins. Forbath is tied for 10th place with Lambo among the career leaders for NFL Field Goal percentage. With the remaining cap space, the Seahawks will also need to use some for re-signing their own free agents. It started late last week with Akeem King agreeing to a one-year deal to stay with the team. The 2019 league year and free agency period begins at 1:00 p.m. PT, March 13.
