The Colorado Rockies and the Chicago Cubs still have work to do to win the National League West and Central division titles , respectively, but both helped their cause with victories Thursday. The Rockies won their seventh straight game with a 5-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies, and they head into the final weekend of the season with a one-game lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers.Dave Roberts and the Dodgers (88-71) were idle Thursday as they traveled from Arizona to San Francisco. They will conclude the regular season with a three-game series against the Giants, their traditional and oft-times hated rival. The Rockies (89-70) conclude their regular season with a three-game series at Coors Field with the Washington Nationals. The Cubs go into the final weekend with a one-game lead over the Brewers.Jim Young/Associated PressThe Cubs (93-66) picked up a 3-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates at Wrigley Field, and they lead the Milwaukee Brewers (92-67) by one game with the final weekend of the season at hand. The Cubs and Brewers clinched postseason appearances Wednesday when the Brewers beat the St. Louis Cardinals (87-72), but the two teams are in a tight battle for the NL Central title. The Brewers appear to have the better matchup in the final series of the year as they host the Detroit Tigers (64-94). The Cubs close the regular season with a three-game series against the Cardinals. The Brewers would need to pick up two full games in the standingsto win the division outright. If they pick up one game during the final series, the two teams would be tied and they would meet in a one-game tiebreaker at Wrigley Field. If that happens, that game would not be considered a playoff game. It is Game 163, and the statistics accumulated in that game would be considered part of the regular season. The team that does not win the division title will play in the NL Wild Card Game.Kyle Newman KyleNewmanDPWith NL West race coming down to the wire, second-place Dodgers counted their chickens before they hatched as #Rockies caught fire, jumped L.A. in the standings: i4QQwmfxOS #MLBIf the Dodgers can't gain any ground on the Rockies, Colorado would clinch its first division title. If the Dodgers pick up one game, those two teams would meet in Game 163 at Dodger Stadium, while the Dodgers would win the division outright if they pick up two games over the final weekend. If the Rockies win the National League West crown, the Dodgers and the Cardinals will battle for the other wild-card spot.Going into the weekend, the Dodgers are 88-71, one game ahead of the 87-72 St. Louis Cardinals. While the Rockies are surging and have an excellent opportunity to win the division, they have not clinched a playoff spot yet. Their magic number is two to ensure they will play postseason baseball. The Dodgers have a magic number of three. The Cubs have a magic number of three to clinch the division title. If the Rockies Matt Andriese Jersey , Dodgers and Cardinals all have the same record at the conclusion of Sunday's action, the Rockies and Dodgers would play for the division title, while the loser would play the Cardinals Tuesday for a wild-card berth. The NL Wild Card game is scheduled for Tuesday, but in the event of the three-team tie mentioned above, it would be played Wednesday. The Atlanta Braves (89-70) have clinched the NL East title, and they cannot earn the National League's No. 1 seed since their maximum win total is 92, while the Cubs already have 93 victories. The Rockies cannot win more than 92 games, so that means the Cubs or Brewers will end up with the top seed.PredictionsThe Brewers have won four games in a row and seven of 10, and they have an excellent chance of sweeping the Tigers in the final series. It will be difficult for the Cubs to do the same to the Cardinals. While St. Louis cannot be happy after being swept at home by Milwaukee this week, the Cards should be able to win at least one game or possibly two against the Cubs. The Brewers and Cubs will end up in a one-game playoff for the NL Central title, and the home team would certainly have the best chance to win that game.In the NL West, the Dodgers will have a difficult time with the Giants, and nothing would make San Francisco and its fans happier than knocking the Dodgers out of the playoffs. San Francisco wins two of three in the final series. If that happens, the Rockies would need just one win against the Nationals to clinch the division title. We see them winning at least two and earning their first division flag. Here's how we see the National League playing out:Atlanta Braves earn the No. 3 seed as the NL East championsChicago Cubs defeat the Milwaukee Brewers in one-game playoff and earn No. 1 seed as NL Central championsBrewers earn No. 1 wild-card spotColorado Rockies earn the No. 2 seed as the NL West champions.Los Angeles earn the No. 2 wild-card spot. Kevork Djansezian/Getty ImagesThe Los Angeles Dodgers are one win away from a return to the World Series, but they will have to beat the Milwaukee Brewers in their home park Friday to seal it.With a 3-2 lead in the National League Championship Series, the Dodgers can secure the pennant with a victory in Game 6. The Boys in Blue made it to the World Series last year, only to fall to the Houston Astros in seven thrilling games.Should the Dodgers return, there won't be a chance at revenge. On Thursday , the Boston Red Sox defeated the Astros in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series. It will be their first World Series appearance since they won it all in 2013.The Brewers are hoping the friendly confines of Miller Park can help them win two games in a row and reach the World Series for only the second time (they made it in 1982, back when they were in the AL).NLCS Game 6 InfoWhen: Friday, Oct. 19 at 8:39 p.m. ETWhere: Miller Park in MilwaukeeTV: FS1Live Stream: Fox Sports Go PreviewLos Angeles will send Hyun Jin-Ryu out to the mound for Game 6. The left-hander was excellent for the Dodgers in the regular season, going 7-3 with a 1.97 ERA.He continued the run of dominance with a lockdown performance against the Atlanta Braves in the NLDS, but he stumbled a bit against the Brewers in Game 2 of the series. Ryu lasted just 4.1 innings, allowing six hits and two runs while striking out four. The Brewers will hope they can knock him out early again.Milwaukee will send out a southpaw of their own in Wade Miley鈥攆or real this time. Manager Craig Counsell had him face just one batter to start Game 5, trotting him out simply to force L.A. counterpart Dave Roberts to prepare for a lefty starter (Miley walked the only batter he faced). As it turns out, it's a good thing Miley will be available for a do-or-die game, as he baffled the Dodgers in Game 2.Miley went 5.2 innings, allowing just two hits while striking out three. His ability to change speed at will kept the Dodgers off balance all night. Unfortunately, just about as soon as Counsell pulled him, it all fell apart for the Brewers, who lost 5-2. If Miley is as brilliant Friday as he was in Game 2, Milwaukee will have a good chance at extending its season another game.Pitching has been key to this series, with neither team reaching its potential in the batters box. The Dodgers and Brewers are averaging a combined 6.4 runs per game. Across the MLB, the average number of runs per game in the regular season was 8.9, per Baseball Reference(the Red Sox-Astros ALCS saw 10 total runs per game).Kevork Djansezian/Getty ImagesWhen the teams have scored, it hasn't been by their usual means. The Dodgers didn't hit a single home run in their three-game homestand in this series. Their last dinger was Justin Turner's go-ahead blast in the eighth inning of Game 2. This is a team that mashed 235 home runs during the regular season Jesus Sucre Jersey , second only to the New York Yankees. In Game 5, the Dodgers' free swingers did well to work the count late and strung together enough hits to record a 5-2 win. Their five runs came via four singles and a ground out (including a particularly joyful RBI single by Yasiel Puig). If the power returns in Game 6, the Brewers are going to be in big trouble. But the Brewers might be a sleeping giant as well. Christian Yelich, an NL MVP candidate, is 3-for-20 in this series without an RBI or extra-base hit. Jesus Aguilar hit a home run in Game 1 but is just 3-for-15 in four games since. Leadoff hitter Lorenzo Cain is 6-for-24. Counsell, for his part, doesn't have any plans to deviate."I'm glad Lorenzo is leading off, and I'm glad Yeli is hitting second," Counsell said, per Yahoo Sports. "They'll do the same on Friday. We're in a good spot with those two guys at the top. You're just kind of waiting for something big to happen with them, and I'm confident it will."Harry How/Getty ImagesThe hope is one or more of them can come alive at the plate and get this team out in front early. The Los Angeles bullpen has been uniformly excellent in this series, and closer Kenley Jansen looks like he is getting back to hisbest. No matter who wins in this series, they will face an incredibly tough task against the Red Sox, a team that won 108 games in the regular season, just defeated the champions in five games and has a murderers' row lineup that is peaking at the perfect time.

Houston's Charlie Morton allowed three earned runs in 2.1 innings, forcing Josh James into early middle relief.James won't be necessary in the upcoming games, as Houston can turn to Justin Verlander, Gerrit Cole and Dallas Keuchel.Verlander is a seven-time All-Star who won the 2011 American League MVP and Cy Young. He already has two victories in these playoffs, including Houston's first win against Boston in Game 1 of the ALCS. Cole is coming off his best career season with a 2.88 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 276 strikeouts, while Keuchel won the 2015 AL Cy Young and allowed only two earned runs in five innings Tuesday.Boston can't match that trio, especially with lingering rotation questions.Bob Nightengale BNightengaleEduardo Rodriguez to pitch for the #RedSox, which could mean that David Price pitches on short rest in Game 5 for Red Sox.Ben Weinrib benweinribRed Sox need to go all-out with their bullpen tonight, forget about tomorrow. Elsewhere, David Price is a postseason disaster with a 5.42 career ERA, and he has allowed seven earned runs and three homers in 6.1 October innings this year. He also may have limited availability after warming up during the eighth and ninth innings Wednesday.Boston has been forced to ride journeyman Nathan Eovaldi, who has responded with a 2.08 ERA and 1.00 WHIP in two playoff starts, both wins. While he has delivered, he also isn't the ace the Red Sox would surely prefer to counter Verlander. The last MLB team to overcome a 3-1 playoff deficit was the Chicago Cubs in the 2016 World Series, and they did so on the backs of Jon Lester, Jake Arrieta and Kyle Hendricks in the final three games. Don't be surprised if Houston does the same with its three aces. Jackie Bradley Jr.'s Resurgence Can Power Red Sox to World Series TitleRed Sox fans are watching an October legend emerge.Bradley was the hero in Game 2 when his bases-clearing double turned a 4-2 deficit into a 5-4 lead, which Boston didn't relinquish. The lineup becomes borderline unfair now that the slick-fielding outfielder who slashed only .234/.314/.403 during the regular season is a threat from the 9 hole. The Red Sox will need to mash their way to a World Series title given their starting pitching questions and Kimbrel testing the heart rates of their fans every time he enters a game. He's allowed at least one run in each of his four postseason appearances, and he loaded the bases in the ninth Wednesday before Benintendi robbed Alex Bregman of a potential walk-off hit.Boston's World Series chances rest on its offensive dominance, and Bradley's heroics combined with the other weapons can overwhelm opposing pitchers.Controversial Fan Interference Overshadows Game 4The 2018 ALCS is now part of Championship Series fan-interference canon.BYU鈥檚 Cosmo the Cougar Is the Next Superstar MascotJoshua Johnson Is HS Footballs Quadruple ThreatThe Champions x Queer EyeHappy 26th Birthday to OBJ 馃帀Happy Anniversary to the Cubs Curse-BreakingD-Rose Turned Back the Clock and Put Up 50Will Drake鈥檚 Favorite Teams Reverse the 6 God Curse?Sports Worlds Halloween Costumes Went HardUp Your Halloween Game with Giant Pumpkin RegattaThe Champions: Episode 6 Is ComingDubs Trolled Fergie So Hard It Became a ChallengePurdue Footballs No. 1 Fan Is Inspiring the TeamOne Road to MLB Starts with a Bottle Cap and BroomstickIts Been a Wild Month with Flyers鈥?Mascot Gritty馃専The Champions: Episode 5 馃専CP3-Rondo Blowup Was a Long Time ComingMahomes Is Showtime Off the Field TooCFBs Creative Entrances Put WWE to ShameWorld Pole Climbing Championships Are Something ElseNBA Let Players Know They Have to Cover Branded TattoosRight Arrow IconEven casual baseball fans remember Jeffrey Maier reaching over the Yankee Stadium wall during the 1996 ALCS between the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles and touching Derek Jeter's homer. WASHINGTON — The Milwaukee Brewers will have to forget fast as they continue their pursuit of a playoff spot by concluding a three-game series with the Washington Nationals on Sunday. The Brewers led the Nationals 3-1 in the eighth inning Saturday but ended up on the wrong end of a 5-4 decision in a game that was delayed nearly two hours by rain and ended well past midnight. The Nationals mounted a two-out rally against reliever Joakim Soria and Juan Soto and capped it with a two-run single against Dan Jennings with Milwaukee closer Josh Hader unavailable.Article continues below ...With a win, the Brewers (76-61) would have moved into the top wild-card spot in the National League.“I think we’ll be fine,” Milwaukee starter Chase Anderson said after giving up one run in five innings. “I know how we respond to things. Our bullpen’s picked up the starters a lot this year. Just gotta pick those guys up.”Soto had three hits to raise his average to .301 and Washington (68-68) climbed back to .500 as it tries to stay in the playoff picture.Adam Eaton started the rally with a two-out double, Trea Turner singled him home, and Bryce Harper and Anthony Rendon walked to set up Soto.“It’s a testament to the boys. They don’t quit,” Nationals manager Dave Martinez said. “They wanted to get back out there and play. They got the field ready. Stopped raining for us. We were able to come back and get a big win.”Milwaukee right-hander Junior Guerra (6-9, 4.09) opposes rookie right-hander Jefry Rodriguez (2-1, 4.54) in Sunday’s rubber game.Guerra is 0-4 with a 7.28 ERA in his last eight starts. He has allowed six earned runs in two of his last three starts. Last time out he only lasted 1 1/3 innings, allowing six runs and eight hits.Brewers manager Craig Counsell said the team did not consider skipping Guerra in the rotation.“We feel like Junior has pitched well for us this year ,” Counsell said. “I won’t tell you his last start was a good start. I will tell you the starts before that were much better than they looked. There’s a lot of indicators that say those were not bad starts, they were bad luck.“I think that’s why Junior’s getting the ball still. We still believe he’s throwing the ball well.”Guerra is 1-0 with a 1.88 ERA in three games (two starts) versus the Nationals.Meanwhile, Counsell said newly acquired Gio Gonzalez won’t start a game in the Brewers’ next series against the Chicago Cubs but will be available in the bullpen.“He’s gonna get outs for us,” Counsell said. “He will play a role in this team going down the stretch. We made the trade and I’m glad we have him.”Rodriguez has a 1.69 ERA in his last three starts. Last time out he threw six shutout innings, allowing two hits and four walks, as the Nationals pulled way late for a 15-0 win over the New York Mets when they scored 14 times in the final two innings.“I think the biggest difference there is, before, I used to like to just battle with my fastball a lot,” he told“Now I’m mixing in my pitches more … using my off-speed more and getting more comfortable and confident with those off-speed pitches.”He’s making his first start against Milwaukee.Nationals catcher Matt Wieters is dealing with a hip/groin issue that has bothered him since Washington’s series in Philadelphia earlier this week. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Stephen Strasburg made all the necessary adjustments. The right-hander threw six effective innings Xander Bogaerts Jersey , Matt Wieters hit a solo homer and the Washington Nationals beat the Philadelphia Phillies 5-3 Monday night.Strasburg (7-7) gave up two runs and five hits, striking out five to rebound from a rough start against Philadelphia last week in his return from the disabled list.“So many little things hitters try to pick, so you always have to look at the tendencies,” Strasburg said. “It was progress.”The Phillies fell 3 1/2 games behind first-place Atlanta in the NL East after losing the opener for the seventh straight series. They’re 6-12 since Aug. 8 and have dropped five games in the standings during that span.Zach Eflin (9-5) allowed five runs — three earned — and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings. His throwing error in the fourth cost him.The Nationals had the bases loaded with one out that inning when Strasburg put a bunt down. Eflin picked it up barehanded and his underhand toss to the plate sailed high for an error, allowing the go-ahead run to score.Adam Eaton followed with a slow roller to the same spot and Eflin made the exact same play and got the out at home.Trea Turner then knocked in another run on a bloop single that fell in because left fielder Rhys Hoskins broke back at first.“We gave them additional outs and you can’t do that against this team,” Phillies manager Gabe Kapler said.Eaton greeted reliever Luis Avilan with an RBI double in the sixth to make it 5-2.Hoskins crushed Ryan Madson’s first pitch in the eighth for his 27th homer.Justin Miller tossed a perfect ninth for his first save in his first try in his 39th appearance.“He comes in and brings so much energy on the mound,” Strasburg said. “The hard work pays off.”Washington took two of three from the Phillies at home last week after trading Daniel Murphy to the Cubs and Matt Adams to the Cardinals.Down 2-0 in the third, the Phillies tied it on an RBI triple by Roman Quinn and an RBI single by Cesar Hernandez. Strasburg struck out Asdrubal Cabrera swinging to strand runners at second and third.Eflin retired the first two batters before Bryce Harper, Anthony Rendon and Juan Soto hit three straight singles in the first to give the Nationals a 1-0 lead.Wieters led off the second with his sixth homer to make it 2-0. He said he was using a new bat after realizing the one he used the past few games was cracked.Strasburg allowed five runs and seven hits over four innings in Washington’s 8-7 win against Philadelphia last Wednesday.“He was able to locate his fastball, throw a high fastball, and made corrections since the last start ,” Wieters said.BOOING THE BUFFALOWilson Ramos was thrown out trying to go first to third on Cabrera’s single to right and heard boos from Phillies fans even though he is playing hurt. Ramos recently returned from a hamstring injury and isn’t healthy enough to do more than jog, but he’s Philadelphia’s cleanup hitter and wants to be in the lineup to help the team chase a playoff spot.“He’s playing through a lot,” Kapler said. “He’s a guy who gives everything he has and he showed a lot of toughness.”NEW MAN ON TOPQuinn led off for the first time and Hernandez batted third for just the third time in 641 career games.TRAINER’S ROOMNationals: RHP Kelvin Herrera was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a torn Lisfranc ligament in his left foot. Mark Brown/Getty ImagesThe 2018-19 MLB offseason is on as clubs race through preparations for the opening of free agency and the executive meetings that follow.Teams have already started work on the internal front, deciding on in-house items like qualifying offers and contract options. That will make it easier to look outside the organization, as each franchise gets a better feel for what it possesses and which puzzle pieces are still missing.Let's get to the latest rumors below.Astros, Dodgers Options for J.T. Realmuto? If All-Star catcher J.T. Realmuto gets his wish, he won't spend the 2019 season with the rebuilding Miami Marlins. His agent, Jeff Berry Blake Swihart Jersey , recently said on MLB Network Radio that Realmuto has already informed the Marlins he will not sign an extension with them:MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM MLBNetworkRadioJ.T. Period," Berry said. It's debatable if the Marlins feel the same way鈥攖hey sound like they want to keep him鈥攂ut it's also obvious that if Miami planned to move him, it wouldn't have a hard time finding interested suitors.Multiple executives mentioned the Houston Astros and Los Angeles Dodgers as potential players in the Realmuto trade market, per Joel Sherman of theNew York Post. The Washington Nationals pursued Realmuto at the trade deadline, per's Joe Frisaro, as did the Atlanta Braves , per's Mark Bowman.Realmuto has emerged as either the best catcher in baseball or one of the position's elites. He made his first All-Star appearance in 2018, finishing the campaign with career highs in home runs (21), RBI (74), runs (74) and OPS (.825) over 125 games. He's also more athletic than the traditional backstop and has a 12-steal season in his recent past (2016).Adding to his appeal鈥攂oth to the Marlins and myriad trade suitors鈥攈e's only 27 years old and under club control through 2020. If Miami does deal him, expect it to ask for the moon in return.Mets Out on Harper, Machado? The New York Mets were abysmal on offense this past season. They had to be in order for Jacob deGrom to manage only a 10-9 record despite posting a ridiculous 1.70 ERA across 217 innings. No team hit for a worse average than New York's .234. Only six clubs scored fewer runs than the Mets' 676鈥攅xactly 200 back of first place鈥攁nd their 170 runs also fell in the bottom third (21st).You might assume, then, they'd be tripping over themselves to rush out in pursuit of a free-agent offensive juggernaut like Bryce Harper (34 homers, 100 RBI) or Manny Machado (37 homers, 107 RBI). But the biggest boppers on the market might cost a lot more than New York has to spend."Industry sources said they do not expect them to be in the race for the top two players on the market this winter," Kristie Ackert reported for theNew York Daily News.As Ackert relayed , the Mets spent just over $150 million on last year's team and have roughly $144 million already tied up in next year's. Even if New York could rummage through enough couch cushions to find the coin needed to chase Harper or Machado, it's probably better off spreading its money around to cover multiple holes. The back of the bullpen has an obvious void after the team traded away Jeurys Familia. As for the offense, the Mets could look to add a catcher, center fielder and perhaps a second basemen.Adrian Beltre Undecided on Playing in 2019, Will Have Options If He DoesAdrian Beltre has nothing left to prove on the baseball field. The 39-year-old has six top-10 MVP finishes, five Gold Gloves, four Silver Sluggers and four All-Star selections. He launched 30-plus home runs five different times and had another five campaigns with triple-digit RBI.He could walk away now and go down as an all-time great. But he hasn't made up his mind whether to call it a career or not. And if he doesn't, he has multiple options on where to spend what would be his 22nd big-league season, per MLB Network's Jon Morosi:Jon Morosi jonmorosiAdrian Beltre continues to deliberate about whether to play again in 2019, source says. (Retirement seemed very likely when season ended.) I鈥檓 told multiple teams have interest if Beltre opts to play. MLBNetwork MLBBeltre addressed the topic in September, and while he didn't indicate which way he was leaning Jason Heyward Jersey , he did sound at peace with the possibility of retirement."Mentally, I'm ready to accept the fact that maybe this is it," he said, per Gerry Fraley of theDallas Morning News. "If it is not, I want to be mentally ready to go through another year of figuring out how to be productive and stay healthy. Whatever my decision, I have to be mentally ready."Beltre can still contribute when he steps inside the lines. He hit .273 this past season while totaling 15 homers, 49 runs and 65 RBI in 119 games. But as his last two game totals show鈥攈e played just 94 times the season prior鈥攁ge and injuries might restrict him to a part-time role if he returns.

MIAMI (AP) — The Yankees slugger choked up.Giancarlo Stanton acknowledged being touched by the warm reception he received the first time he stepped to the plate Tuesday at Marlins Park.He saluted the crowd Zack Greinke Jersey , waved and patted his chest as he looked to the stands. He then singled sharply to left field.“It’s a lot to take in,” Stanton said. “A lot of things go into this — where I’m at now. I grew up over there.”Over there is the Marlins clubhouse, where Stanton spent his first eight major league seasons before being traded last November. That made the Yankees’ two-game series in Miami his homecoming.Stanton went 2 for 6, missing his 300th career home run by a few feet when he doubled in the fifth, and the Yankees won 2-1 in 12 innings. Before the game, he sat in the visitors’ dugout before batting practice, which gave him a different angle of Marlins Park’s kitschy, colossal home sculpture.“I still don’t like it,” he said with a laugh. “But it won’t be going off if I hit one.”Stanton activated the moveable sculpture more than any other player before leaving the Marlins. Speaking of himself in the plural, he said it was weird but good to be back, and said he harbored no hard feelings about the way his time with the Marlins ended after eight seasons.“We know what the situation is over there now Paul Goldschmidt Jersey , and how it was,” he said. “We understand.”The situation is that former Yankees shortstop and new Marlins CEO Derek Jeter rebooted the woebegone Miami franchise, trading away several big contracts for prospects with the goal of becoming competitive in a few years. Stanton, coming off a 59-homer MVP season, wanted no part of a rebuilding project and approved a trade to the Yanks. Now he’s likely to make the playoffs for the first time, while the Marlins are headed for a ninth consecutive losing season.“I hope they’ll figure it out,” Stanton said. “I hope they get it turned around. It will take a couple of years. But if the pieces are put together right, I think they’ll turn it around.”Jeter didn’t talk with the media before the series opener. But Marlins manager Don Mattingly acknowledged it has been different without Stanton — and without Christian Yelich, Marcell Ozuna and Dee Gordon, who were also traded.“You miss all those guys,” Mattingly said. “Some good players went out the door as we embarked on building this thing to the level we wanted and trying to build some continuity and sustainability. You knew you were going to miss all those guys.”Stanton began the week batting .285 with 32 homers and 80 RBIs — stats comparable to his time in Miami. He reminisced about hitting at Marlins Park when it was still a construction site before opening in 2012. He said he’ll do no sightseeing during his brief stay in Miami , but will spend time with former teammates and friends. He has many in Miami, as the ovation in the first inning showed.“That was really cool — definitely more than I could ask for,” Stanton said. “That’s going to be one of the more special moments of my career.” Trivia time: When is the last time the major league leader in ERA had fewer wins than the guy who finished last? The answer is coming up in a few paragraphs, but the question is relevant because it could happen again this year. Lucas Giolito of the Chicago White Sox, currently bringing up the rear among pitchers who qualify for the ERA title, notched his 10th victory of the season Saturday night, which is two more than major league ERA leader Jacob deGrom has.DeGrom’s plight has been well documented. Pitching for the woeful Mets, he’s 8-8 with a 1.71 ERA. Giolito is 10-9 with a 5.85 ERA. It’s a stark example of why a pitcher’s won-lost record can be deceiving, but Giolito’s progress is worth watching over the final few weeks of the season. The White Sox are 18-17 since the All-Star break and showing signs that their rebuild is heading in the right direction.Left-hander Carlos Rodon has a 2.71 ERA in 13 starts this year, and highly touted prospect Michael Kopech is in the majors now — he earned his first career victory Sunday. If Giolito — a first-round draft pick by the Nationals in 2012 — starts performing better, then Chicago’s rotation could look even stronger going forward. Giolito had 63 strikeouts and 60 walks before the All-Star break. Since then Randy Johnson Jersey , that ratio has improved to 40-to-15.Meanwhile, down in the minors, the White Sox have one of the game’s top prospects just waiting to be unleashed. Outfielder Eloy Jimenez is hitting .364 for Triple-A Charlotte. As for the answer to that trivia question: In 1992, Bill Swift of the Giants led the majors with a 2.08 ERA and went 10-4. Scott Sanderson finished with a 4.93 ERA, the highest among qualifying pitchers, but he went 12-11 for the Yankees. In 2004, there was a tie in wins between ERA leader Jake Peavy (15-6, 2.27) and last-place finisher Shawn Estes (15-8, 5.84).Other developments from around the majors:LONG WAY BACKSince divisional play began in 1969, the furthest any team has finished out of first place is 52 games, a mark set by the 1998 Florida Marlins in the NL East. (That was a dreary year for baseball in the Sunshine State. Tampa Bay finished 51 games behind the Yankees in the AL East.)This season’s Baltimore Orioles could end up a lot worse than that. They’re already 52 ½ games behind first-place Boston in the AL East , and there’s still plenty of time to sink lower. The Orioles are on pace for 116 losses, and their schedule down the stretch isn’t likely to ease up. Their final 10 games at the end of September are against the Yankees, Red Sox and Astros.HIGHLIGHTJose Altuve turned a routine flare into a double play with a bit of quick thinking Friday night. With a man on first and one out, the Houston second baseman let David Fletcher’s soft popup drop near the edge of the infield, then picked up the ball and threw to first in time to get the batter. Kole Calhoun, the Angels‘ runner on first, headed toward second when the ball dropped, but he was still caught in a rundown after the play at first. Calhoun was eventually tagged out.LINE OF THE WEEKPhiladelphia’s Aaron Nola struck out nine in eight innings, beating Washington’s Max Scherzer 2-0 in a matchup of National League Cy Young candidates Thursday. Nola allowed five hits and lowered his ERA to 2.13.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig took a swing at San Francisco Giants catcher Nick Hundley and both players were ejected during a benches-clearing scrap in the seventh inning Tuesday night.Puig swatted his bat in frustration after fouling off a pitch from Tony Watson , and Hundley said something to the mercurial slugger while still in his crouch. Puig turned around and walked toward Hundley, the catcher stood up, and they stood face to face and argued for a moment before Puig shoved Hundley twice. That brought players out of the benches and bullpens. Puig and Hundley were momentarily separated, but Puig ducked around teammates, coaches and manager Dave Roberts before reaching back to hit Hundley. He smacked Hundley with an open hand across the front of his catcher’s mask. The players were then separated again for good. After discussing with both managers Prince Fielder Jersey , the umpires ejected both Puig and Hundley. It was the fourth career ejection for Puig, who had also got into a skirmish with Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner in 2014. Don鈥檛 expect to see Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Chris Archer in pinstripes this season.According to Fancred'sJon Heyman, the New York Yankees are "not likely" to acquire the right-handed starter prior to Tuesday鈥檚 non-waiver trade deadline. Heyman explained it doesn't make "much sense" for the American League East鈥檚 second-place team to trade for him unless it moves Sonny Gray.Archer has a 4.31 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 102 strikeouts in 96 innings this season after posting an ERA over 4.00 in each of the last two years. Despite the solid but unspectacular numbers, he is still just 29 years old and finished with a sub-3.50 ERA three straight seasons from 2013 through 2015.The two-time All-Star would also bring an element of team control that many deadline acquisitions don't ,seeingas how he isn鈥檛 set to be an unrestricted free agent until 2022, perSpotrac. While the Yankees are 5.5 games behind the Boston Red Sox in the AL East and a middling 13th in the league in starting pitcher ERA,, the rotation has stabilized of late thanks to the emergence of Gray. He has allowed just two earned runs in his last 16.1 innings, giving New York a weapon alongside the newly acquired J.A. Happ Nolan Ryan Jersey , Luis Severino, Masahiro Tanaka and CC Sabathia. With Happ now in the rotation and Gray bouncing back, there is less need for Archer as New York pursues a spot in the postseason.

NEW YORK (AP) — Aaron Hicks and the New York Yankees reached the playoffs the same way they played the regular season: They got hurt, stood up and kept on going. Hicks doubled home the winning run in the 11th inning , just after a foul ball to an ankle sent him sprawling to the dirt face-first in pain, and the Yankees clinched an AL wild card for the second straight year with a 3-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday.“It hurts. It’s going to be sore tomorrow, that’s for sure,” Hicks said after limping to his locker, his left ankle taped. “I think after I hit the ball, it was kind of all adrenaline.”Rookie manager Aaron Boone will lead the Yankees into the winner-take-all Oct. 3 wild-card game, most likely against Oakland. The Yankees are 1½ games ahead of the Athletics for home-field advantage and are 53-27 at home this season.New York acquired slugger Giancarlo Stanton from Miami during the offseason, and then boosted its offense with the early season call-ups of rookies Gleyber Torres and Miguel Andujar. Stanton will be in the playoffs for the first time following eight frustrating seasons with the Marlins.“There’s no feeling like it,” Stanton said after the Yankees celebrated with a bubbly spraying in their clubhouse, many wearing new “DEFEND THE BRONX” postseason T-shirts. “I’m going to enjoy tonight, enjoy this buzz and celebration Paul Molitor Jersey , and just know we’ve got more work to do.”New York sprinted to a 54-27 record at this season’s halfway point and was ahead of Boston by percentage points in the quest for its first AL East title since 2012, but the Yankees slowed in the second half as Aaron Judge, Gary Sanchez, Gregorius and Aroldis Chapman got hurt. The Red Sox clinched their third straight division crown by beating New York on Thursday.Still, at 95-59 the Yankees matched their most wins since 2012 and equaled their season high of 36 games over .500. They will make their 54th postseason appearance — 21 more than any other team — and their 20th in 24 seasons.Boone replaced Joe Girardi last fall, having never managed at any level, tasked with leading the team to its first World Series title since 2009. He walked around the clubhouse during the celebration thanking each player individually.“Everyone in that room understands that we feel just as capable as any other team that’s going to have an opportunity to do something special,” said Boone , who set off a celebration at old Yankee Stadium with his pennant-winning homer against Boston in 2003.Chad Green, Chapman, Dellin Betances, Zach Britton, Jonathan Holder and Tommy Kahnle (2-0) each pitched a scoreless inning in relief of Lance Lynn. Holder escaped a second-and-third, no-outs, and bases-loaded, one-out jam in the 10th , helped by first baseman Luke Voit’s diving catch of a Chris Davis liner with the infield in.“I would imagine if we win big, we’ll look back and they’ll have played a huge role,” Boone said.Speaking in the afternoon, Boone called Hicks “one of the most underrated players in the game.”New York went ahead in the second inning against David Hess when Hicks hit his 26th home run and Voit hit his 11th in 32 games since he was acquired from St. Louis on July 29, a drive that hit the Toyota sign above the Yankees bullpen in right-center . Still learning about New York, Voit had trouble finding the D train on the subway to get to Yankee Stadium.“Man, this has been the craziest year in my life,” Voit said.Baltimore scored against Lynn when Cedric Mullins‘ tapper in front of the plate drove in a run in the third , and DJ Stewart singled in the tying run in the fifth . Lynn got out of bases-loaded trouble in the fifth when Adam Jones grounded into a forceout.Tampa Bay lost at Toronto as the ninth inning was about to start in the Bronx, putting the Yankees in position to clinch with a win. New York finally broke through after Gregorius singled off Paul Fry (0-2) starting the 11th.Stanton struck out, and the foul ball off Hicks’ foot caused a two-minute delay. Hicks took a ball and then lined a low, inside slider down the left-field line.Gregorius sped around the bases as left fielder John Andreoli picked up the ball by the wall, and Gregorius slid in headfirst ahead of shortstop Jonathan Villar’s relay throw and spread his arms wide. Hicks said X-rays on the ankle were negative — but his necklace was cut in half during the celebration. Now the Yankees will try to stay ahead of the A’s and host the wild card.“You got to come to this jungle here or us fly cross-country and go spend a couple days on the West Coast?” Stanton said. “I think we’d prefer to be here.”Judge, a veteran of last October’s run, kept the day in perspective .“Enjoy it. Soak it up,” he said. “But we’ve still got four more celebrations to go.”SINKINGBaltimore dropped to 44-110, one shy of the franchise record for losses set by the 1939 St. Louis Browns. The Orioles entered 60½ games out of first place and are assured of next year’s top pick in the amateur draft.Steve Wilkerson was thrown out at the plate twice, by Torres after the second baseman retrieved Sanchez’s errant throw and by Judge on Caleb Joseph’s single to right in the fifth . Wilkerson threw out Torres trying to score from third on Andrew McCutchen’s seventh-inning grounder to third.“We’re not in the playoff hunt, but it gives you a little experience of what the atmosphere is like,” Fry said. “Everyone’s against you.”STRUGGLINGA day after the Yankees said the struggling Sanchez would be their postseason starter, he allowed his major league-leading 15th passed ball — he tied for the high last year with 16. He also made his sixth error.TRAINER’S ROOMOrioles: RHP Andrew Cashner remains bothered by pain in his left knee. … RHP Hunter Harvey is to have his sore elbow examined Monday, according to manager Buck Showalter.UP NEXTLHP J.A. As Covers shared, LV SuperBook has the Dodgers listed at 12-1 to capture the championship and the Diamondbacks just behind them at 14-1.Covers CoversUpdated MLB futures odds from LVSuperBook to win the 2018 World Series. em7GN2DbrqArizona and Los Angeles have to worry about more than each other in the race for the division crown and playoff positioning, as the Colorado Rockies are a mere one game behind the Diamondbacks and 1.5 games ahead of the Dodgers. The National League Central is also an issue for those NL West teams looking to make the playoffs, as the St. Louis Cardinals and Milwaukee Brewers occupy the two wild-card positions with Milwaukee enjoying a one-game advantage over Colorado for the last postseason spot.It is a testament to Los Angeles' recent track record it still has fairly favorable odds to win the division and World Series as it is in third place in the division and is on the outside looking in at the playoff picture this late in the season. It won the NL West in each of the last five years, dropped last year's World Series in a heartbreaking seven games and features notable players such as Manny Machado, Clayton Kershaw and Justin Turner. However, the Diamondbacks are 8-4 against the Dodgers and 7-5 against the Rockies this season and have set the standard in the division to this point. If they continue taking care of business in the seven head-to-head games they have remaining against each division rival, Arizona will be in ideal position to win the NL West and play into October. BOSTON (AP) — Andrew Benintendi’s hit bounced a handful of times before finding its way into center field for the winning run and a big four-game sweep over the rival Yankees. The Red Sox now find themselves in firm control of the AL East.Benintendi’s RBI single with two outs in the 10th capped Boston’s rally from three runs down in the ninth against New York closer Aroldis Chapman, and the Red Sox completed a four-game sweep with a 5-4 victory Sunday night.“Any 10 hopper that goes through for a hit feels pretty good,” the usually quiet Benintendi said , breaking into a grin. “Everybody knew how big the series was. We came in and did what we wanted to do. We kind of stole this one.”Boston opened a 9 1/2-game lead atop the division over the Yankees, who lost their season-high fifth straight.“It feels like another great win, obviously it was against our rivals,” Boston’s J.D. Martinez said.Mookie Betts hit his 26th homer for Boston (79-34), which has won eight of nine games and owns the majors’ best record. The Yankees hadn’t been swept in a four-game series by the Red Sox when they entered a series 30 or more games over .500 since Hall of Famer Ted Williams’ rookie season in 1939, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.“A tough way to obviously end a tough weekend, but we can’t let this define what’s been a great season,” manager Aaron Boone said.Sandy Leon looped a two-out single off Jonathan Holder (1-3) in the 10th and advanced on a wild pitch. Tony Renda pinch-ran before Benintendi’s single up the middle to the right of the second-base bag into center field.Matt Barnes (4-3) worked a perfect inning in the top of the 10th.For the Yankees, it was a stunning reversal of the Boston Massacre in 1978 when the Yankees came to town and swept the Red Sox en route to erasing a large lead and capturing the AL East.“We lost these four games here, but what I can tell you is that we’re gonna keep battling. We’re gonna keep playing ball,” Chapman said through a translator. “There’s no looking back.”It snapped his streak of converting 22 straight opportunities since his last blown save on May 4.With New York leading 4-1 in the ninth Andrew Cashner Jersey , Chapman loaded the bases on walks before Martinez’s two-out, two-run single pulled Boston within one. Third baseman Miguel Andujar then bounced a throw to first on Xander Bogaerts‘ grounder, with pinch-runner Jackie Bradley Jr. racing home with the tying run.Red Sox starter David Price took a shutout into the seventh, giving up two runs and four hits with five strikeouts and three walks.Playing on a beautiful mid-summer night with a sellout crowd amped from the opening pitch, Price and Masahiro Tanaka were locked in a scoreless duel before Betts hit a hanging cutter completely out of Fenway Park over the Green Monster in the fifth.Price, tagged for 12 runs over 4 1/3 innings in his other two starts against the Yankees this season, left to a rousing ovation with two on and nobody out in the seventh.Heath Hembree walked Shane Robinson before Bogaerts booted what looked like a sure double-play grounder, allowing two runs. Stanton followed with an RBI single and Gleyber Torres had a sacrifice fly.Tanaka gave up one run and six hits, striking out nine and walking one in 4 2/3 innings.NOT FOR SALERed Sox ace Chris Sale, on the 10-day disabled list with mild left shoulder inflammation, will miss his second straight start.Manager Alex Cora had been saying the hope was for him to start Wednesday in Toronto. NEW YORK (AP) — In a surprising twist to their search for a general manager Roy Oswalt Jersey , the New York Mets were getting closer to completing a deal with high-profile agent Brodie Van Wagenen, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press on Saturday. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because talks were ongoing. The 44-year-old Van Wagenen has been co-head of CAA Baseball since 2010 and emerged as the team’s top choice for GM from a list of 10-12 original candidates. He appears set to switch sides at the bargaining table after representing several Mets stars including Jacob deGrom, Yoenis Cespedes and Todd Frazier.Tampa Bay Rays senior vice president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom also was a finalist and remains a possibility, according to the person. An announcement is expected shortly after the World Series — but no sooner than Tuesday.Doug Melvin also had a second interview with ownership this week, but the former Texas and Milwaukee general manager was told he is no longer in the running. With the Mets seeking a replacement for Sandy Alderson, the finalists met during the week with owner Fred Wilpon and his son, chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon.Alderson was hired as Mets general manager in October 2010 but took a leave of absence in late June after a recurrence of cancer. He said the team’s poor record did not merit him returning.Baseball decisions have since been made by the trio of assistant general manager John Ricco and special assistants Omar Minaya and J.P. Ricciardi, all reporting to the Wilpons.Players and rival agents around the majors have expressed concern about a potential conflict of interest if Van Wagenen flips roles, though the move is not unprecedented. Former big league pitcher Dave Stewart made the switch from agent to front-office executive with the Arizona Diamondbacks, and a couple of GMs in the NBA did the same.“In my role as an agent, my solution is to create opportunities for players to be successful both on and off the field ,” Van Wagenen said Monday in a statement released by the Mets after his second interview. “My conversations with the Mets continue to be organic. I believe baseball is better when the Mets are competitive and successful.”Following the team’s second consecutive losing season, Jeff Wilpon has been looking for a progressive thinker from outside the organization to take over as GM. He said he was open to “untraditional candidates,” an approach that has support from his father, and would like to have someone in place by the Nov. 5-8 general managers’ meetings.Jeff Wilpon also said he would like Ricco, Ricciardi and Minaya to return — but that doesn’t guarantee they’ll be retained.“As Jeff and Fred continue their search for a new head of baseball operations, the players, fans and entire organization will be motivated to have a leader with the skills and commitment to win,” Van Wagenen said in his statement. “If the Wilpons believe I am that person, we will have that conversation.”Van Wagenen also represents Mets minor leaguer Tim Tebow, the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner and former NFL quarterback. If he takes the GM job, Van Wagenen would need to give up his career as an agent.Van Wagenen played college baseball at Stanford with current Houston Astros manager AJ Hinch J.R. Richard Jersey , and the two became good friends. SEATTLE (AP) Charlie Morton did what’s become expected on the mound in getting his 12th victory, while Evan Gattis and Josh Reddick provided the pop needed with all the big names missing from the Houston Astros‘ lineup right now.Gattis hit a two-run home run to put Houston ahead, Reddick capped it with a two-run shot in the ninth inning, and the Astros snapped a five-game losing streak with a 5-2 win over the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night.Already without Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa, the Astros lost George Springer for most of Tuesday’s game with a sore shoulder.”We’ve just got to go in there and do our job and not try to make up too much for those guys because obviously we’re not those guys and what they can do,” Reddick said. ”We’ve got to piece it together and hopefully put a few guys (together) that can make one of them.”Gattis’ 21st home run of the season came in the sixth off Seattle starter Mike Leake and snapped a 1-1 tie. Leake left a breaking ball in the middle of the plate and Gattis clubbed it over the left field fence to put the Astros in front.Reddick greeted new Seattle reliever Zach Duke with a shot to deep right-center field in the ninth. It was the first home run allowed this season by Duke, who was acquired in a trade with Minnesota.Morton (12-2) struck out eight and didn’t allow Seattle to put together a sustained rally. Seattle’s offense was limited to Jean Segura’s solo home run and Mitch Haniger’s RBI single. Morton was pulled after the sixth, despite giving up just two runs and throwing 90 pitches. The sixth inning was the only time Seattle had multiple runners on base and Morton got out of the jam after Haniger’s single by getting Chris Hermann to ground out with two runners on.”He pitched great. His command of his pitches was overall good tonight. Got some big swings and misses when he needed to,” Houston manager A.J. Hinch said.Hector Rondon pitched the ninth for his 10th save.Leake (8-7) escaped a bases loaded jam in the fourth inning, but couldn’t avoid giving up a run in the fifth. Leake left a 0-2 pitch to Reddick in the middle of the plate and his two-out single scored Tony Kemp. Gattis added his homer an inning later.Leake allowed eight hits and struck out four. He allowed three earned runs or more for just the fourth time in his past 13 starts.”Felt good (early), I was mixing and matching and kind of keeping them off-balance , and then they got me a couple times,” Leake said.INJURY CONCERNAs if the Astros needed more injury concerns, Springer left the game in the second inning with left shoulder soreness. Springer fell awkwardly on the shoulder making a diving attempt to stop Denard Span’s triple in the first inning. He was replaced by Kyle Tucker.Springer said he received treatment throughout the game.”It just didn’t feel right. I know when it feels right and I know when it doesn’t. Got some stuff done during the game and again we’ll see what happens tomorrow,” Springer said.NO OFFENSEThe Mariners ended July scoring just 77 runs in 23 games, an average of 3.3 runs per game. It was a drastic drop over June when the Mariners averaged 4.5 runs per game and went 19-9 overall. Segura’s homer was his eighth of the season and Haniger was in a 2-for-26 skid before his RBI single.”We just haven’t been able to put big numbers up there. We’ve had innings here and there, but it’s going to take everybody contributing, it’s not just one guy to go up there and hit the big three-run homer,” Seattle manager Scott Servais said.TRAINER’S ROOMAstros: Houston SS Carlos Correa went through a full pregame workout on Tuesday including hitting and fielding during batting practice. Correa also did an extensive running program as well. Hinch said if all goes well Correa could go out on a rehab assignment as early as Thursday with Double-A Corpus Christi. Correa has been out since June 26 with a back injury. … 2B Altuve joined the Astros in Seattle, but will simply be doing rehab work the next few days on his injured right knee. Hinch said it would likely be in Los Angeles before the team tests Altuve with any baseball activity.Mariners: LHP Roneis Elias was placed on the 10-day DL with a strained left triceps. Servais said Elias felt the arm start to bother him last weekend in Anaheim and an MRI revealed the strain.UP NEXTAstros: Dallas Keuchel (8-9) has gone 5-1 with a 2.16 ERA over his past eight starts. He had won five straight before losing to Texas in his last start.Mariners: Wade LeBlanc (6-1) looks to continue his career-best season. LeBlanc got a no decision in his last start against the Angels. He’s made one start this season against the Astros, allowing three runs in four innings in a no decision in June.—

ATLANTA (AP) The Atlanta Braves acquired outfielder Adam Duvall from the Cincinnati Reds on Monday night to bolster their lineup, especially against left-handers, for a postseason push.Duvall was targeted for a platoon role , starting against left-handers. The move will cut into Ender Inciarte’s playing time. For the Reds, the trade opens the way for full-time roles for corner outfielders Jesse Winker and Scott Schebler while adding three young players. The Braves sent right-handers Lucas Sims and Matt Wisler and outfielder Preston Tucker to Cincinnati. All three spent time in Atlanta this season but were with Triple-A Gwinnett at the time of the trade. The trade was announced following the Braves’ 5-3 win over Miami on Monday night.Duvall, 29, has hit 15 home runs with 61 RBIs but is hitting only .205 this season.Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulos said the Braves plan to start Duvall in left field against left-handers, with rookie Ronald Acuna Jr. moving to center and Inciarte Robinson Cano Jersey , a Gold Glove Award-winning center fielder, moving to the bench.”We’ve been a good team against left-handers but we can get better and this is a guy who’s under control going forward,” Anthopoulos said.Anthopoulos said Duvall and Inciarte have been told of the outfield plan.”I talked to Ender tonight and he was great,” Anthopoulos said. ”His response was `I just want to get to the playoffs.’ He’s awesome.”Duvall hit 64 homers over the previous two seasons, including 31 in 2017. He was an NL All-Star in 2016.Duvall was also a finalist for the Gold Glove Award in each of the last two seasons. The Braves are only a half-game behind Philadelphia in the race for the NL East. The Reds are last in the NL Central despite a recent surge.”We’re pleased with the performance we’ve seen in the middle of the summer Felix Hernandez Jersey ,” said Reds president of baseball operations Dick Williams. ”We’ve been trying to keep an eye on next year but this year is also important. … I think when we looked at next year we saw Winker and Schebler really emerging as corner outfielders that are going to have a lot of success in the big leagues.”Wisler, 25, had a 5.40 ERA in seven games, including three starts, with Atlanta this season. Sims Hisashi Iwakuma Jersey , 24, had a 7.84 ERA in six relief appearances. Tucker, 28, hit .256 with four homers and 22 RBI in 62 games. Tucker was optioned to Gwinnett on Saturday.—

MIAMI (AP) — Miami Marlins president of baseball operations Michael Hill dismissed talk about trading J.T. Realmuto with a joke Friday Michael Fulmer Jersey , noting the All-Star catcher may well be in a new uniform next year because there are rumors about the team changing its logo.Realmuto’s agent, Jeff Berry, predicted this week that his client will be with a different team by spring training.“Agents can say whatever they want to say,” Hill said. “J.T. knows how we feel about him.”But Hill declined to say whether Realmuto informed the Marlins he won’t sign a long-term contract with them, as Berry said.“Any conversations we have with our players are going to stay in house,” Hill said. And Hill acknowledged the possibility of tempting trade offers Leonys Martin Jersey , with some likely to come during next week’s general manager meetings in Carlsbad, California.“J.T. is obviously a very talented player,” Hill said. “I would expect there will be interest in a lot of our talented players. It’s our job to go there with an open mind of how we improve.”Realmuto, 27, was a first-time All-Star team this year and had 21 homers and 74 RBIs, both career highs , while batting .277. He had a $2.9 million salary after losing in arbitration, and is eligible for arbitration this winter and again following the 2019 season. After losing 98 games and finishing last in the majors in runs, the Marlins have made a hitting upgrade their priority, Hill said.“We like where we’re at from a pitching-depth standpoint,” he said. “But we need to score more runs and improve our offense, and I think that will be a big part of the conversations we have next week.” A look at what’s happening around the majors today:SET FREERobinson Cano is set to return from his 80-game suspension for violating baseball’s drug agreement when Seattle plays at Oakland. The All-Star second baseman has been out since May 15 Ryan Carpenter Jersey , though he’s been playing in the minor leagues for the past week. Cano is ineligible for the postseason if Seattle makes it, but manager Scott Servais hopes the 35-year-old can help the Mariners get there as a versatile piece around the infield. Servais said the team will work Cano in slowly, getting him reps at first, second and third base.“We need to be smart in breaking him in,” Servais said. “He wants to get going, he wants to contribute right away. He’s missed playing Jeimer Candelario Jersey , he’s missed his teammates and being around this whole thing. I know he wants to come in and do a lot. But again small little things.”Seattle entered Monday 1 1/2 games behind Oakland for the second AL wild card.ROLLING RONALDRonald Acuna Jr. is the youngest player to homer in four straight games during the live ball era, according to ESPN, and he’ll go for five when Atlanta hosts Miami. Acuna homered to lead off both ends of Monday’s doubleheader against the Marlins, making him the first to do that since Baltimore’s Brady Anderson in 1999 and just the fourth to do it overall, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.MAKING PROGRESSKenley Jansen is back with the Dodgers and preparing to return to action sooner than expected after being diagnosed last week with an irregular heartbeat. Jansen threw a light bullpen session Monday and will also throw Wednesday and Friday this week. Jansen expects to return much sooner than the initial projection of 4 to 6 weeks, though he says he may still require an ablation procedure on his heart this offseason. He had a similar operation in 2012.CENTRAL SHOWDOWNThe Cubs and Brewers begin a pivotal two-game series at Wrigley Field. Milwaukee is three games back of Chicago for the top spot in the NL Central after David Bote’s game-ending grand slam pushed the Cubs over the Nationals in the ninth inning Sunday night. Jhoulys Chacin (11-4 , 3.91) will pitch for the Brewers against Jose Quintana (10-8, 4.28), who gave up five runs in a 9-0 loss to Kansas City last time out.NOT VERY VERLANDERJustin Verlander tries to bounce back from his worst start of the season when Houston hosts Colorado. Verlander allowed six runs in two innings against the Mariners last time out before getting ejected for arguing a balk call. Verlander allowed three homers in that game and has given up 10 in his past five starts — compared to 12 in his first 20. German Marquez (9-9, 4.69) will start for the Rockies.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Farhan Zaidi understands the intrigue that stems from his unique baseball path: from the small-budget Oakland Athletics to the big-spending Los Angeles Dodgers and back to the Bay Area to join the rival Giants.San Francisco’s new front-office whiz plans to incorporate plenty from the franchise’s rich tradition by leaning on some of the entrenched baseball minds behind its success this decade , even if there are varying ideas about how to get the Giants back into playoff contention.“It’s a convenient narrative to see this as kind of a clash of schools of thought. I just don’t see it that way at all,” the MIT-educated Zaidi said of mixing his analytics expertise with the old-school practices of veteran executive Brian Sabean and manager Bruce Bochy. “Obviously we didn’t get to these points in our career the same way or in a similar way, but I think that’s part of the beauty of the game, how we all wind up together and then pulling toward a common goal.”Following four years as general manager of the Dodgers, Zaidi received a five-year contract to become Giants president of baseball operations Tuesday. He was formally introduced Wednesday at AT&T Park, then headed back to Southern California and the GM meetings in Carlsbad. He’ll join up with San Francisco’s front office on site — a trip Zaidi figures will bring some “normalcy” back to his life after a whirlwind few days switching organizations.Giants CEO Larry Baer and Zaidi first met Friday for a planned two-hour session that carried on for 6 1/2 hours. Zaidi on Wednesday thanked the Dodgers for allowing him to pursue an opportunity with their NL West rival, saying “I’m incredibly gracious.”Andrew Friedman, the Dodgers’ president of baseball operations, said it would be fun competing against Zaidi. At the GM meetings, Friedman said the Dodgers would miss Zaidi’s “creativity, work ethic, ability to connect with people. He’s extremely talented and somebody who’s obviously made a huge impact for us the last four years.”Friedman said he and Zaidi had conversations about the Giants’ job during the last week. “I kept telling him, obviously I’m biased but I’m trying to do everything I could to support him and be a sounding board and set my bias to the side.”The Dodgers didn’t try to lure Zaidi back Dave Henderson Jersey , Friedman said. “No, I mean that was the point. If this was something he wanted to pursue we were going to support him.”The next step for Zaidi is hiring a general manager and a farm director, something he hopes to do soon if the right candidate emerges. It’ll be a new direction for a franchise that won World Series championships in 2010, ’12 and ’14.Zaidi’s Dodgers reached the World Series the past two years without winning.“The response was just total heartbreak, I guess. I don’t know how else you say it,” he said.Zaidi will spend the coming months learning more about a franchise he’s watched closely for decades. He has already exchanged text messages with some core players, and he plans to visit a few this offseason. Zaidi’s first baseball game came at Candlestick Park in 1987, so this feels like coming “full circle.”Zaidi earned his bachelor’s degree in economics from MIT in 1998 and a Ph.D. in economics from the University of California at Berkeley in 2011. He spent 10 years with the A’s before joining Los Angeles.“It was quite compelling the way Farhan was able to put together winning franchises throughout,” Baer said, noting he hopes Zaidi will lead the club decades into the future.San Francisco went 73-89 during an injury-plagued 2018 with a major league-worst 5-21 record in September, missing the playoffs for a second straight year and third time in four seasons.Zaidi has no plans of tackling a turnaround on his own. Sabean will stay directly involved, and Bochy is allowed the last word when it comes to on-field moves, including the lineup and rotation.“Anything that is under the privy of the manager , the manager has final say — period. That is not even a question for me,” Zaidi said.Zaidi and Bochy spoke briefly already and will meet in person at some point. Bochy is scheduled to attend late Hall of Famer Willie McCovey’s celebration of life Thursday at the ballpark after Zaidi is already back in the San Diego area.To Bochy and Sabean, Zaidi expressed his interest in learning from both longtime, accomplished baseball men while bringing a fresh look, saying “I see this as a collaborative process” with “ideas flowing both ways.”A message he kept coming back to Wednesday: “Our goal is to play meaningful baseball as deep into the season and as soon as we can.”To do so, he will strive to make “one good baseball move after another” in building a winning roster.“I think the theme that we had from a player-acquisition standpoint in particular was no move is too small to not be worth a certain level of effort and detail — waiver claims, minor league free agents, second or third players in trades,” he said. “There’s a lot of value to be had in identifying talent in those regards.”Oh, and don’t rule out an A’s-Giants trade with his former Oakland boss, Billy Beane.“I think one of those could happen,” Zaidi said, grinning. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington Nationals turned in one of their best performances on the day the meaningful portion of their season ended.Rookie Austin Voth and four relievers combined on a one-hitter Santiago Casilla Jersey , and the Nationals beat the New York Mets 6-0 on Saturday, hours after they were eliminated from playoff contention.“It stings,” manager Dave Martinez said. “But we’ve still got seven more games. … These guys don’t quit. They came out ready to play today.”Matt Wieters and Trea Turner homered for Washington, and Bryce Harper added an RBI double. The Nationals’ loss Friday night, coupled with the Atlanta Braves’ win, knocked them out of the NL East race. Then, shortly after Saturday’s game began, the St. Louis Cardinals beat the San Francisco Giants on a 10th-inning homer, ending Washington’s slim wild card hopes.“It’s something where we felt like we had the talent in this clubhouse and we still feel like we have the talent in this clubhouse,” Wieters said. “We just didn’t play well enough and that’s why this game’s played on the field and not in the papers and that’s what’s great about it.”Favored to win a third straight division title, the Nationals slid into third place on June 22 and remained there.Ownership stood pat at the July trade deadline, and the team responded by winning six of seven games. However, a four-game losing streak soon had the Nationals nine games out of first place in mid-August Clayton Richard Jersey , and the team unloaded players including Daniel Murphy and Matt Adams. The team dealt with injuries to pitchers Stephen Strasburg and Sean Doolittle, as well as Adam Eaton, Murphy and Ryan Zimmerman, but even when healthy, Washington was unable to put together an extended winning stretch. The Nationals are 78-77 with seven games remaining after going 97-65 a year ago.“I think all of us in here would sit here and tell you we came here every day and did everything we could to try and win. At least I did. Because of that I can go home and be at peace with it,” Zimmerman said. “Obviously, it’s frustrating. You want to come out and win every year and have a chance to go into the playoffs.”Voth (1-1), making his second major league start, allowed only an infield single to Michael Conforto leading off the fourth inning. Voth struck out five with two walks in five innings.“He kept us off balance,” Mets manager Mickey Callaway said. “He had a good curveball I thought. He was able to throw it for strikes … and then he got it down when he needed to, and his fastball command was pretty good.”Even with Saturday’s win, the Nationals will lose the season series to the fourth-place Mets.Turner’s 18th homer of the season, a two-run shot , put Washington ahead in the third, and Wieters added a three-run homer off reliever Jerry Blevins in the sixth.New York’s Corey Oswalt (3-3) allowed two runs over five innings.Matt Grace, Justin Miller, Jimmy Cordero and Austen Williams each worked an inning for Washington in relief of Voth.Harper drew his 125th walk of the season, a career high and a Nationals record.STREAKINGWashington’s Anthony Rendon extended his on-base streak to 30 games with a sixth-inning double, and Turner extended his on-base streak to 22 games with a first-inning double.TRAINER’S ROOMMets: 2B Jeff McNeil was given the day off.Nationals: OF Eaton (sore and stiff left knee) was out of the starting lineup for the fifth time in six games.UP NEXTLHP Steven Matz (5-11, 4.18 ERA) makes his sixth start of the season against the Nationals, who will start RHP Erick Fedde (2-3, 5.02) in the series finale.

A physical giant, ox-strong, swinging his bat like an ax. The future.Smash MLB's single-season rookie home run record, as Judge did with 52 in 2017, in, say, Oakland, where Mark McGwire set the old record of 49 in 1987, and you're celebrated. Do it on the game's biggest stage, smack dab in Yankee Stadium, and you're deified. That part can be dangerous , because when you're the first position player in MLB history to stand 6'7" and weigh 282 pounds (that factoid brought to you by none other than the Elias Sports Bureau, the game's official statistician), you cannot so much as sneeze without causing a seismic reaction. So when his now-teammate and then-rival Giancarlo Stanton approached to meet him at last year's All-Star festivities in Miami, it was a made-for-paparazzi moment. When Judge then chopped his way to the Home Run Derby title, his outsized physicality became even more pronounced. So, too, did it when he fell into a second-half slump in which he whiffed 99 times in 241 at-bats, a whopping 41.1 percent rate (as opposed to 109 times in 301 at-bats in the first half, a 36.2 percent rate). What impressed his Yankees teammates during the slide is the same mental acumen that helped Judge then and will do so in the future. They were amazed at his ability to keep focused and that his demeanor remained unchanged. Born in Linden, California, the adopted son of two teachers has a mind to match his muscles. All rise, indeed. After regaining his balance, Judge nearly pushed the Yankees to their first post-Jeter/Rivera World Series, amassing a 1.065 OPS against Houston in an American League Championship Series that went to a seventh game. He was named the AL Rookie of the Year Authentic Matt Ioannidis Jersey , finished second in the league's MVP balloting and is the coverboy for MLB The Show 18. In person or on a video screen, Judge is a sight to behold. Nobody stings the ball harder: Seven of his home runs last season screamed out of the park at 117 mph or faster, per Statcast; only two homers by anyone else all year had exit velocities that high (both were hit by Stanton). Jonathan Daniel/Getty ImagesThe Washington Nationals placed starting pitcher Stephen Strasburg on the 10-day disabled list Thursday , retroactive to July 22, with an unspecified injury. An MRI on Strasburg's shoulder revealed no damage, and the star pitcher will visit a neurologist in Los Angeles to evaluate a potential nerve issue, per Dan Kolko of MASN.According to'sJamal Collier Kyle Seager Jersey , the Nats are expected to call up Tommy Milone to start against the Miami Marlins on Thursday.Washington's decision comes on the heels of a disappointing outing for Strasburg in his most recent start. After allowing six earned runs on eight hits and two walks in 4.2 innings against the Atlanta Braves last week, Strasburg got into an argument with fellow starter Max Scherzer in the dugout. The Nationals placed Strasburg on the DL in June with right shoulder inflammation. Injuries have been a recurring problem for the three-time All-Star, with noting he made six trips to the DL over the past four years prior to his latest stint.Injury issues aside, Strasburg has been fairly solid in 2018. While not pitching at the standards he set over the last few seasons , he's6-7 with a 3.90 ERA and a 3.50 FIP in 14 starts.Strasburgfinished with a career-best 2.52 ERA (minimum six starts) last season. While Milone is expected to replace Strasburg for the time being, there will be additional pressure on Scherzer, Gio Gonzalez, Tanner Roark and Jeremy Hellickson to step up while Strasburg is out as well. The Nats are seven games behind the Philadelphia Phillies for the NL East lead Carlos Ruiz Jersey , and they trail the Atlanta Braves by 5.5 games for the final wild-card spot in the NL.If Strasburg's DL stay is an extended one, an already difficult trek to the postseason will become even tougher for Washington. The Arizona Diamondbacks' hopes for a return to the playoffs took a hit with star third baseman Jake Lamb dealing with an injury to his rotator cuff.According to Zach Buchanan of The Athletic, Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said the injury is fraying in the rotator cuff that may require surgery. However, he granted there could be other options that would prevent him from missing the remainder of the 2018 campaign.Paul Goldschmidt is the face of the Diamondbacks , but Lamb quickly established himself as an excellent No. 2 thanks to his breakout performance in 2016. The 27-year-old slugged .509 with 29 homers two years ago, leading the team in the former category and trailing only Yasmany Tomas in homers.Last season saw Lamb improve on his power output, hitting a career-high 30 homers, and he was named to the National League All-Star team.Lamb's injury opens the door for Daniel Descalso and Eduardo Escobar to play the hot corner. The Diamondbacks have a strong roster Jean Segura Jersey , led by Goldschmidt and A.J. Pollock, but Lamb's absence leaves a significant void in the lineup. They need him to make a swift return if they hope to keep pace with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Colorado Rockies in the National League West.

TAMPA Houston Astros Jersey , Fla. (AP) — The minor leagues’ new extra innings rule led to a bizarre victory for the Clearwater Threshers on Monday night. The Philadelphia Phillies‘ Class A affiliate had no hits and no walks against the Tampa Tarpons, yet it beat the New York Yankees‘ Florida State League club 1-0.Clearwater took advantage of a rule introduced this year that places a runner at second base at the start of each extra inning to cut down on marathon games. The rule has been criticized by baseball traditionalists. On Monday, it made it possible for Tampa to lose despite a nearly perfect game.Yankees prospect Deivi Garcia opened with seven perfect innings in a scheduled seven-inning game, but the scoreless contest went to the eighth.Christian Morris replaced Garcia for the eighth, and Clearwater automatic runner Luke Williams quickly went from second to third when shortstop Diego Castillo dropped the ball during a rundown. Two batters later, Williams scored on Daniel Brito’s groundout to first.Tampa went down in order in the bottom of the eighth. It was the first time a Florida State League team lost a no-hitter since Scott Backum of Winter Haven fell to Clearwater on Aug. 23, 1992.The extra innings rule is part of Commissioner Rob Manfred’s initiatives to boost the pace of play. Manfred has said the rule is unlikely to be implemented in the majors. The Los Angeles Dodgers are hoping recent MLB history repeats itself. The Dodgers pulled off the biggest move of the 2018 trade season when they acquired superstar shortstop Manny Machado from the Baltimore Orioles one day after the All-Star Game. The Dodgers gave up minor league prospectsRylan Bannon, Yusniel Diaz, Dean Kremer , Zach Pop and Breyvic Valera to get Machado.A year ago, the Houston Astros acquired right-handed starter Justin Verlander prior to the trade deadline, and his arrival helped them capture the 2017 World Series. The Chicago Cubs traded for closer Aroldis Chapman a year earlier and were able to win the World Series over the Cleveland Indians in 2016.Machado, who is scheduled to become a free agent at the conclusion of this season, told the Baltimore Sun's Jon Meoli before his trade that he wants to play shortstop throughout the rest of his career. He moved from third base to shortstop this year, but he has been forced to play third base for the Dodgers due to Justin Turner's groin injury. Turner is on the 10-day disabled listDodgers manager Dave Roberts told Andy McCullough of theLos Angeles Timesthat Machado was quite willing to return to third base to help the team while Turner is out with a groin injury.Machado has a .312/.385/.564 slash line with 25 home runs and 67 RBI this season, and one of those home runs came in a Dodger uniform. The Orioles have not stopped since trading Machado, either, sending closer Zach Britton to the New York Yankees for pitching prospectsDillon Tate Hector Rondon Jersey , Cody Carroll and Josh Rogers on Wednesday. Tate and Carroll are right-handed pitchers, while Rogers is a southpaw. The move seemed curious on the surface because the Yankees had perhaps the game's most powerful bullpen with Chapman, Dellin Betances, David Robertson and Chad Green. However, Chapman has struggled quite a bit in the last month. He has a 7.20 ERA in his last seven appearances, and knee issues may keep him from being at his best. The addition of Britton could pay huge dividends for the Yankees if Chapman does not regain his best form.Teams still have three more days to complete trades before Tuesday's trade deadline, and big names could continue to be on the move.Adam Jones could be the next Oriole on the move prior to the trade deadline.Gail Burton/Associated PressThe Orioles may continue their housecleaning by moving five-time All-Star outfielder Adam Jones. MLB Network's Jon Morositweeted that the Indians and the Philadelphia Phillies both have interest in Jones.Cleveland is in excellent shape to win the AL Central title, but the Indians know the biggest battles will come in the postseason against potential opponents such as the Boston Red Sox, Astros and Yankees. Adding a big bat like Jones could pay huge dividends for the Indians Anthony Gose Jersey , who lost the seventh game of the World Series in extra innings to the Cubs two years ago.The Phillies have a narrow 2.5-game edge over the Atlanta Braves in the NL East, but the battle could go down to the final days of the regular season. The presence of Jones in the lineup could give the Phillies the edge.Jones has a .281/.307/.430 slash line with 11 home runs and 42 RBI going into Saturday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays.Minnesota Twins right-handed pitcher Kyle Gibson is not a superstar, but he has become a dependable pitcher for the Twins with a 3.42 ERA and 126 strikeouts in 129 innings. He shut down the hard-hitting Red Sox at Fenway Park Thursday night by allowing just one run in an eight-inning effort, and he looks like he could be an excellent add for any contending team.Predictably, he is generating interest, according to Fox Sports'Ken Rosenthal. However, if the Twins would need an impressive package in return to move Gibson since he is not eligible to become a free agent until 2020.

ARLINGTON Glenn Hubbard Jersey , Texas (AP) — Adrian Beltre will play as often as his troublesome hamstring will let him in the final month of his 21st and possibly final season. And it will all be with the last-place Texas Rangers.Beltre hit his 470th career homer after 23-year-old sluggers Nomar Mazara and Ronald Guzman went deep, helping the Rangers stop a five-game losing streak with a 7-4 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Saturday night. The 39-year-old Beltre was still with his team of the past eight seasons when the deadline passed for him to go to a contender and be eligible for the playoffs. That was good news to Texas manager Jeff Banister when the calendar turned to September.“He’ll get as many opportunities to play for the rest of the year that he’s capable and healthy enough to go get,” Banister said before the game. “I think he deserves that. I think our players deserve that. I think our fans deserve that.“I thought somebody might take a shot at him. Woke up this morning and happy that he’s still with us.”Beltre’s homer leading off the fourth was the four-time All-Star’s eighth of the season and hit No. 3,143 for his career, breaking a tie with Robin Yount for 17th on the career list.If he can avoid further issues with a left hamstring that sent him to the disabled list twice this season, Beltre has a shot at catching George Brett to get into the top 15 all-time in hits. Brett had 3,154.Mazara led off the second inning with his 18th home run and second in as many nights, matching his total from the previous 42 games. Guzman’s 13th homer was a three-run shot that capped a four-run second to put the Rangers ahead for good at 4-2.Texas’ fourth homer was the 18th of the season for Rougned Odor, a solo drive in the seventh.Yovani Gallardo (8-3) ended a streak of three winless starts, giving up six hits and three runs in five innings. Jose Leclerc struck out two in a perfect ninth for his eighth save in 12 opportunities.Jake Cave homered for the second straight game for the Twins — the rookie’s ninth of the year — and doubled and scored twice. Logan Forsythe had three hits and an RBI.Jose Berrios (11-10) struck out six in four innings, but all three hits he allowed were homers. He gave up five runs. The right-hander hasn’t won since Aug. 4.“As a competitor, nobody wants to finish the season the way my few games have been,” Berrios said through a translator. “Let’s just keep looking forward and get ready for the next game.”ROSTER EXPANSIONSThe Twins added catcher Chris Gimenez Rickey Henderson Jersey , outfielder Johnny Field and pitchers Andrew Vasquez and Tyler Duffey from Triple-A Rochester for the Sept. 1 roster expansion. … The Rangers added lefty reliever Zac Curtis, who was claimed on waivers from Philadelphia in August.DIFFERING DEBUTSThe 24-year-old Vasquez had a shaky big league debut with two errors that helped the Rangers score an unearned run in the fifth. He dropped a throw trying to cover first base on a grounder by Shin-Soo Choo, and an errant pickoff attempt allowed Choo to score from third.Rangers right-hander Connor Sadzeck’s first three pitches in the majors were 99-mph fastballs, and then he struck out Mitch Garver swinging on a 79-mph curveball with two runners on to end the sixth. The 26-year-old has appeared in 155 games in the minors since 2012.TRAINER’S ROOMTwins: Right-handed reliever Matt Belisle (right knee injury) was activated from the disabled list.Rangers: Right-hander Bartolo Colon (lower back strain) and outfielder Delino DeShields (fractured right middle finger) were activated from the 10-day disabled list. Colon, however, won’t start Sunday as Banister had indicated. Banister said the 45-year-old in his 21st season was dealing with an illness. … Left-handed reliever Zac Curtis was recalled from Triple-A Round Rock.UP NEXTThe Twins plan to use lefty reliever Gabriel Moya (3-0, 4.73 ERA) as the starter in the series finale. Manager Paul Molitor said Zack Littell, who has been with Triple-A Rochester since early July, likely will be used as the next pitcher. It would be the 23-year-old Moya’s first career start after 31 relief appearances over two seasons. Rangers LHP Yohander Mendez (0-1, 14.73) is set for his second career start after getting sent to the minors for violating team rules in June. The first-place Cleveland Indians will attempt to avoid being swept in a three-game series by the last-place Kansas City Royals when the two teams meet on Sunday afternoon in Kauffman Stadium. After splitting a tense and competitive four-game series with the Red Sox in Boston on the first leg of a seven-game road trip, the Indians have looked flat in dropping the first two games in Kansas City by a combined score of 12-5, including the Royals beating Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber 7-1 Saturday night.Cleveland has lost four in a row, matching its longest losing streak of the year.Article continues below ...“We’ve got to figure out a way to play better ,” Indians manager Terry Francona said. “We look a little tired. We’ve got to show up (Sunday) and grind and find a way to win.”The Indians go into Sunday’s series finale with their two most important hitters, both MVP candidates, in slumps. In the first six games of the road trip Francisco Lindor is hitting .154 (4-for-26) with no RBIs, and Jose Ramirez is hitting .143 (3-for-21) with no RBIs.“They’re having a tough time,” Francona said. “We lean on them so much, and we will continue to. But (Royals pitchers) have done a real good job on those guys the last couple of nights.”In their 7-1 loss Saturday night the Indians were out-hit by the Royals 14-5. Cleveland’s only run came on a balk.Sunday’s pitching matchup will be a pair of right-handers, Cleveland’s Shane Bieber vs. Kansas City’s Jorge Lopez.Bieber (7-2, 4.36) is coming off one of his most impressive starts of the season, a 6-3 win over Boston on Aug. 21 in which he held the Red Sox’ potent offense scoreless on two hits through the first six innings. Bieber’s final line was 6 1/3 innings, three runs, five hits, with five strikeouts and no walks.Bieber is a rookie, and like many rookies he’s been very streaky. In four August starts he is 2-0 with a 3.13 ERA. In his four starts prior to that he was 1-2 with a 7.71 ERA. In his four starts prior to that he was 4-0 with a 2.19 ERA.Sunday will be Bieber’s second career appearance vs. Kansas City. His only other appearance against the Royals was a start on July 3 in which he got the win in a 6-4 Cleveland victory. He pitched six innings Rollie Fingers Jersey , allowing four runs and nine hits, with two strikeouts and one walk.Lopez (0-3, 3.99) was acquired by Kansas City from Milwaukee as part of a trade in which the Royals sent Mike Moustakas to the Brewers. Lopez was used as a reliever in Milwaukee, but the Royals are using him as a starter. In 10 relief appearances with the Brewers Lopez was 0-1 with a 2.75 ERA. In two starts with the Royals he is 0-2 with a 6.52 ERA. Lopez also appeared in a combined 26 games (two starts) at the Triple-A level for the Brewers and Royals and was 4-3 with a 5.26 ERA.Lopez’s last major league start for Kansas City was a 1-0 loss to Tampa Bay on Aug. 20, in which he pitched five innings, allowing one run and five hits, with three strikeouts and three walks.Lopez has one career appearance vs. Cleveland, a relief effort for Milwaukee on May 9. He pitched two innings, giving up two runs and two hits, with one strikeout and no walks. For his career overall at the major league level, Lopez is 1-3 with a 5.95 ERA in four career starts. In 11 career relief appearances he is 0-1 with a 2.91 ERA.

BALTIMORE (AP) — After letting his teammates do the heavy lifting in the first game of a doubleheader Authentic D.J. Swearinger SR Jersey , J.D. Martinez carried the Boston Red Sox to victory in the nightcap.Martinez hit two home runs, including a tiebreaking, two-run drive in the eighth inning, and the Red Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-4 Saturday night for a sweep of the split admission twinbill. In the opener, David Price struck out 10 over six sparkling innings, Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a pair of solo homers and Boston cruised to a 5-0 daytime victory.Martinez leads the majors with 37 homers, 104 RBIs and 143 hits, but he did nothing to add to those numbers in the first game, going 0 for 4.“The first game for me was rough, so I was in battle mode out there D.J. Swearinger SR Jersey Elite ,” Martinez said.Martinez hit a solo shot in the fourth inning before connecting in the eighth off Mike Wright (3-1) to make it 5-3. It was his third multihomer game of the season, all against Baltimore.“I really work hard at preparation,” he said. “I look at the game as an exam, like a test.”Give the man an A. He went 2 for 2 with two walks and three RBIs to keep Boston on a roll. The Red Sox have won nine of 10 to improve their big league-best record to 84-35. The split doubleheader was caused by a rainout on July 25; before the bad weather came that night, Boston led 5-0 in the second inning.Boston manager Alex Cora used a collection of relievers to handle the pitching in the second game, beginning with Hector Velazquez, including Joe Kelly (4-0) and concluding with Craig Kimbrel, who worked the ninth for his 34th save.It was a struggle until Martinez sent a 1-0 pitch into the left-field seats.“In the eighth, we were worried about how we were going to put together these 27, 30 outs , whatever we needed to win,” Cora said. “Then he put a great at-bat together.” Joey Rickard and Trey Mancini homered for the Orioles, who will try to avoid a four-game sweep on Sunday. Baltimore is 2-13 against the Red Sox this season. The Orioles stranded 10 and went 2 for 9 with runners in scoring position.“We had some opportunities with some people on base that we didn’t cash in on,” manager Buck Showalter said. The Orioles (35-83) were officially eliminated from contention in the AL East on Friday night and on Saturday clinched a second straight losing season. In the first game, Price (12-6) scattered five hits and walked none to win his sixth straight start against Baltimore. The lefty had at least one strikeout in every inning and did not allow a runner past second base.Three relievers followed Price with three hitless innings. With a dozen shutouts, the Red Sox are tied with the Cubs, Indians and Pirates for the major league lead. After the Red Sox won 19-12 on Friday night, both teams were quiet offensively until Boston broke through with a flourish against rookie Jimmy Yacabonis (0-1) in the fifth inning.Xander Bogaerts led off with a single and Eduardo Nunez hit a 3-0 pitch inside the left-field foul pole for a home run. One out later, Bradley lined an opposite-field drive to right. That was all the offense the Red Sox required with Price in peak form.TRAINER’S ROOMRed Sox: C Blake Swihart (hamstring strain) will begin his rehabilitative assignment on Sunday with Short-A Lowell, Cora said.Orioles: OF Craig Gentry (ribs) went 1 for 3 and scored a run Saturday night in a rehab assignment with Class A Frederick.ORIOLE FAMEFormer second baseman Brian Roberts and longtime play-by-play announcer Fred Manfra were inducted into the Orioles Hall of Fame in a ceremony before the second game.UP NEXTRed Sox: Chris Sale (11-4 , 2.04 ERA) starts Sunday after a two-week stint on the disabled list with shoulder inflammation. Cora said the Boston ace could throw 100 pitches if he’s not too rusty. To make room for Sale, after the second game the Red Sox designated reliever Brandon Workman for assignment.Orioles: Alex Cobb (3-14, 5.55 ERA) makes his 22nd start of the season. Baltimore is 4-17 in his starts, and he’s won only once since June 5. BALTIMORE — On Saturday, the Chicago White Sox will have the chance to accomplish something they haven’t done in 10 years — win a season series against the Baltimore Orioles A victory for the White Sox would give Chicago a 4-2 lead in the season series against the Orioles with just one game left, locking up the win for the season. The White Sox (58-89) did twice split a series with Baltimore (42-105) — in 2011 and 2015 — but have gone 10 years without actually winning one. That last happened when Chicago took five of nine from the Orioles in 2008.Article continues below ...Chicago also will try and stretch its winning streak to three in a row in Saturday’s game. They won the final game of a series in Kansas City Wednesday before beating Baltimore 8-6 in the first game of this series on Friday night.Reynaldo Lopez (5-9, 4.22) of the White Sox and Baltimore’s Yefry Ramirez (1-5. 5.94) will be the starters in the middle game.Lopez has pitched just once against the Orioles and has an 0-1 record with a 13.50 ERA.Ramirez, a rookie right-hander, will be making his first start and appearance versus the White Sox in his career. He has pitched well at times this season but struggled more of late. The White Sox showed plenty of power in Friday’s victory. Avisail Garcia and Omar Narvaez both hit two-run homers, and Ryan Cordell added a solo shot (his first major-league hit after going 0-for-15 to start his career) as Chicago won thanks to getting six solid innings from starter James Shields David Price Jersey , who won on the road for the first time since Opening Day.Shields said his teammates will keep on pushing right until the final game, and he likes how hard they’re working.“We’re going to finish strong,” Shields said. “We’re going to play all the way until the end. They want to get better every day.”The Orioles also showed some power in the loss, thanks to Trey Mancini, who came up with a multi-homer game on a rainy night. He hit solo homers off of Shields in the second and fourth innings. Mancini now has 23 homers and 53 RBI this season after his first multi-homer game in 2018.Injuries have put the Baltimore starting rotation in trouble. Andrew Cashner (knee) and Alex Cobb (blister/cut on middle finger of right hand) can’t pitch in the next few days, so the Orioles still have not posted a starting pitcher for Sunday’s series finale.Rookie Luis Ortiz made his first major league start Friday but lasted just 1 2/3 innings before leaving with a hamstring injury after giving up three runs. So, that’s why everything remains up in the air for Sunday’s game.“See how we get through the next two nights,” Orioles manager Buck Showalter said Friday. “I think we’ll probably have to wait until Saturday’s over and see who’s kind of left there.”The White Sox did not make any player moves on Friday but Baltimore made two, recalling pitchers Donnie Hart and Evan Phillips from Triple-A Norfolk to bolster their struggling bullpen.

ATLANTA (AP) Brian Snitker will have to wait a bit longer to take advantage of his newly expanded Braves rotation.Relentless rain took care of that. The Braves’ game against the Miami Marlins on Wednesday night was postponed following steady rain throughout the day. The game never started and was called about 90 minutes after its scheduled starting time. The game will be made up as the first game of a split doubleheader on Aug. 13 , when Miami returns to Atlanta. This was the 45th postponed game in the majors this year, six more than all of last season.Snitker quickly shuffled his rotation, including a change in plans for right-hander Kevin Gausman, acquired from the Baltimore Orioles before Tuesday’s trade deadline. Snitker plans to use a six-man rotation with Gausman.Gausman had been set to start on Friday at the Mets but instead will make his Braves debut in New York on Saturday.Right-hander Mike Foltynewicz will start as scheduled when Atlanta opens a four-game series at the Mets on Thursday night. Right-hander Anibal Sanchez, who had been set to pitch Wednesday night, instead will start on Friday. Julio Teheran is scheduled for Sunday’s game.Marlins right-hander Pablo Lopez, who had been scheduled to pitch Wednesday night, instead will start on Thursday when Miami opens a four-game series at Philadelphia. The Braves won the first two games of the series with Miami and entered Wednesday’s schedule one-half game behind first-place Philadelphia in the NL East.Snitker hoped to play Wednesday night’s game because he wanted to avoid having to play two doubleheaders in a week. The Braves already have a doubleheader planned for Tuesday at Washington.”It’s not a big deal,” Snitker said. ”You want to play just because I didn’t really want to get the doubleheaders backed up. And, you know Miles Mikolas Jersey , I wanted Anibal to get out there and we’ve got a little three-game (winning streak) going and I wanted to keep playing.”TRAINER’S ROOMAs expected, Braves rookie Kolby Allard was optioned to Triple-A Gwinnett following his win in his major league debut on Tuesday night. The Braves recalled RHP Wes Parsons, who also is looking to make his first appearance in a major league game. Parsons was recalled for one day on June 27 but did not appear in a game.RAINY ATLANTAThis is the third Braves home game postponed by rain and the fifth in two seasons at SunTrust Park. Rain delayed the start of Tuesday night’s game by 1 hour, 27 minutes. Following the delay, the Braves won 11-6.UP NEXTMarlins: Lopez (2-2, 5.34) will make his sixth career start, and his first against the Phillies, in the series opener at Philadelphia.Braves: Foltynewicz (7-7, 3.04) is 0-1 with a 7.04 ERA in four career games, including three starts Bud Norris Jersey , against New York.— A look at what’s happening around the majors today:BRONX BOMBERSThe New York Yankees take aim at baseball’s single-season home run record, a day after tying the mark of 264 set by the 1997 Seattle Mariners. The Yankees connected four times Friday night in Boston, with Aaron Judge hitting the homer that matched a Mariners club that included Ken Griffey Jr., Alex Rodriguez, Jay Buhner and Edgar Martinez. The Yankees are the only franchise with more than 15,000 home runs, nearly 1,400 more than the second-place Giants, according to They can add to their total and set the record at Fenway Park when they face ex-Yankees starter Nathan Eovaldi.OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAINDavid Wright will start at third base for the New York Mets against Miami in his farewell game before a sellout crowd at Citi Field. “It’s going to be a sleepless night , I know that,” Wright said Friday. “I’m just trying to enjoy it, but tomorrow is going to be surreal for me.” Longtime teammate and friend Jose Reyes, perhaps also nearing the end of his career, will play shortstop alongside Wright. “I think he’s hitting leadoff and I’m hitting third. It’s like Old-Timers’ day around here, so it’ll be nice,” Wright said. “It’s going to bring back obviously a lot of memories.”The Mets captain finally made it back into a major league game Friday night, grounding out in his first plate appearance in nearly 2½ years as New York lost 8-1 to the Marlins. Unable to overcome all the injuries, the 35-year-old Wright said he expects this weekend to mark his final appearance in the big leagues.GETTING CLOSEKris Bryant and the Cubs can clinch their third consecutive NL Central crown — and home-field advantage throughout the NL playoffs — with a win over St. Louis and a Milwaukee loss to Detroit. Chicago, with a one-game lead in the division Yadier Molina Jersey , sends left-hander Cole Hamels to the mound at Wrigley Field. Miles Mikolas (17-4, 2.94 ERA) looks to win his fifth straight start for the Cardinals, clinging to fading wild-card hopes following four losses in a row. “Clearly the back is completely against the wall,” St. Louis manager Mike Shildt said.Up in Milwaukee, left-hander Wade Miley (5-2) tries to pitch the Brewers to their sixth consecutive victory. Both the Cubs and Brewers are assured at least a wild card.MOUNTAIN WESTThe Rockies try to move closer to clinching their first NL West championship when they host Washington. David Dahl homered for the fifth game in a row to extend the Rockies’ winning streak. Next, Jon Gray (12-8, 4.91 ERA) starts for Colorado vs. Stephen Strasburg (9-7, 3.77).

BALTIMORE (AP) — The New York Mets enjoyed a memorable night in the midst of a season that’s worth forgetting.Kevin Plawecki hit his first career grand slam during a nine-run sixth inning Alex Gordon Jersey , Brandon Nimmo went 5 for 5 with three RBIs and the Mets breezed past the Baltimore Orioles 16-5 on Wednesday. Plawecki’s slam highlighted a 19-hit outburst for the Mets, who reached a season high in runs. Nimmo achieved a career high in hits and had two cracks at completing the cycle; Todd Frazier homered , drove in four runs and fell a triple short of the cycle; and backup third baseman Jack Reinheimer got his first major league hit .Wilmer Flores also homered for the Mets, who earned a split of the two-game interleague series. New York finished 1-3 this season against the Orioles, who own the worst record in the majors. The Mets are nestled in fourth place in the NL East and have little chance to salvage a winning season. This game, however, was special to several players , most notably Nimmo.New York’s leadoff hitter was vying for the cycle after going single, double, double, triple in his first four at-bats. He was hit by a pitch in the seventh inning and wrapped up his night with a single in the ninth. The cycle didn’t happen, but Nimmo had no complaints.“I really was thinking that five hits would be pretty cool, too. Same with getting on base six times,” he said. “When I got that last hit I was ecstatic. Nights like these Mike Moustakas Jersey , you kind of just want to bottle up and live with them forever.”Zack Wheeler (8-6) gave up one run and five hits over five innings to win his sixth straight start. The right-hander was removed from the game by manager Mickey Callaway after the Mets sent 12 batters to the plate in a lengthy sixth against Dylan Bundy (7-11) and three relievers. After Bundy left with two on, Nimmo hit a two-run triple. A wild pitch let in a run and Frazier doubled in two runs before right-hander Evan Phillips issued a pair of walks to load the bases for Plawecki.Phillips fell behind in the count before grooving a fastball that Plawecki smacked into the left-field seats. It was only his 11th home run in 205 games over four seasons.“In that situation, I was just trying to find the barrel,” Plawecki said. “Obviously it was a really good result.”Bundy allowed seven runs and a career high-tying 11 hits in 5 1/3 innings, a performance that lifted his ERA to 4.99.“He’s not very crisp with his command,” manager Buck Showalter said. “He’ll make a couple good pitches and just can’t finish the at-bat sometimes. A couple of flares hurt him. We know what Dylan is capable of, he just hasn’t been able to get there really. It’s been off and on.”The bullpen was equally ineffective. After the game Salvador Perez Jersey , the Orioles optioned Phillips to Triple-A Norfolk. Jonathan Villar homered for Baltimore and scored twice.TRAINER’S ROOMMets: David Wright (shoulder/back) went 0 for 3 while playing 3B for Class A St. Lucie and is hitless in three rehab games. He has not played a major league game since May 2016. … Jay Bruce (sore right hip) played 1B and went 2 for 4 for St. Lucie. He has been on the DL since June 18.COMFORTABLE CONFORTOThough Mets CF Michael Conforto went 1 for 8 with five strikeouts in the series, he’s batting .299 since the All-Star break.Conforto missed all of spring training after undergoing shoulder surgery last September.“I think that he’s finally finding more of a comfort zone,” Callaway said. “He’s done a great job of settling in, and we’re seeing a more consistent Michael Conforto out there every day.”UP NEXTMets: It’s up to Philadelphia for a single-admission doubleheader on Thursday. Corey Oswalt (1-2) will start the opener followed by Steven Matz (1-2), who’s been on the DL with a strained left arm. He will be limited to 80 pitches, Callaway said.Orioles: A rarity on Thursday for Baltimore, which gets its second day off this week (also Monday). The Orioles open a three-game series in Cleveland on Friday night. DENVER (AP) — San Diego infielder Wil Myers has a cut on his nose after taking a groundball to the face while practicing at his new position.Myers was fielding grounders at third base during batting practice Wednesday prior to a game against the Colorado Rockies when a ball went over his glove and struck him. Myers fell to the dirt as teammates rushed in to check on him. Myers left the field holding a towel over his face with a trainer near his side.Myers was scheduled to make his eighth start at third base as the Padres’ experimented with sliding the veteran first baseman across the infield. Myers was later scratched from the starting lineup , and Cory Spangenberg will slide over from second and play third base, while Jose Pirela takes over at second.Myers is a career .348 hitter at Coors Field with eight doubles and two homers.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — A trifecta for Joey Gallo and Rougned Odor backed an efficient seven innings by Mike Minor as the Texas Rangers won a close game after a pair of lopsided wins.Gallo and Odor both homered for the third straight game, this time in a 3-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday night after the Rangers had scored a combined 28 runs to win each of the first two games in the series by at least eight runs.“Both of them are swinging the bat very well, seeing the baseball very well,” manager Jeff Banister said, adding that Odor has been patient at the plate and Gallo has been aggressive in the zone. Gallo hit a scorching liner into the right field seats right after Adrian Beltre started the fourth by reaching on a throwing error by third baseman Renato Nunez. His 29th homer of the season put the Rangers up 2-0 against Baltimore starter Dylan Bundy (7-10).“Getting some pitches to drive, and when he does, he drives them out of the ballpark,” Banister said.“Joey’s been really good at the plate , too, been really focused,” said Odor, who went deep in the eighth with a towering 445-foot solo shot beyond the Rangers bullpen in right-center for his 13th homer. Minor (8-6) threw 63 of his 86 pitches for strikes over seven innings. A full-time reliever last season for Kansas City after missing two whole seasons because of left shoulder surgery, the lefty struck out six without a walk while allowing one run and four hits. He is 2-0 with a 2.50 ERA his last three starts.“We’ve just kind of mixed it up, all four pitches, instead of two-pitch mix. I threw more curveballs, more changeups in and out, mixed it up pretty well,” Minor said. “I’m getting better with my pitches every week.”Bundy struck out six and walked two in his six innings. He has allowed 27 homers this season Bryce Harper Jersey , one more than Kansas City’s Jakob Junis for the most in the majors.“I’m not happy about it at all, but it was a little bit better,” Bundy said. “I only left one ball over the plate instead of three it seems like the past two outings.”WITH THE SAVEJose Leclerc, the expected closer after Keone Kela was traded to Pittsburgh earlier this week, worked a perfect ninth for his first save in five chances.SHORT HOPSOrioles DH Mark Trumbo’s RBI single in the seventh was his 1,000th career hit . He is the 31st active player with at least 1,000 hits and 200 homers (214). … Texas SS Elvis Andrus extended the longest active hitting streak in the majors to 15 games with his double in the first. … Texas has won seven of eight overall.HONORING VLADVladimir Guerrero, whose only season with the Rangers was for their first World Series in 2010, was honored in a pregame ceremony after his induction last weekend into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Showalter said Gentry is ahead of INF Steve Wilkerson (oblique), who initially was also set to start rehab last week. “I don’t know if I’d call it a setback,” Showalter said. “We just don’t want to push it and say well, here’s the schedule. Let’s see what the players’ bodies are telling us.”Rangers: CF Delino DeShields is on MLB’s seven-day concussion disabled list. The Rangers announced the move Saturday, more than three weeks after DeShields banged the back of his head when trying to make a sliding catch in Boston. He had been scratched from Friday’s lineup because of headaches.UP NEXTRight-hander Drew Hutchison will start the series finale for the Rangers a day after agreeing to a major league contract. The Rangers announced his signing in the eighth inning of Saturday night’s game. It will be his first big league start since 2016 with Pittsburgh. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Injured shortstop Dansby Swanson didn’t make the Atlanta Braves‘ roster for the National League Division Series. His replacement is Charlie Culberson , someone familiar to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Braves announced their roster Thursday, hours before the start of Game 1.The Dodgers left All-Star pitcher Ross Stripling off their roster. The right-hander sparkled when added to the rotation because of injuries, going 8-3 with a 2.92 ERA before getting hurt and shifting back to the bullpen in August. Also not on the Dodgers’ roster is 39-year-old infielder Chase Utley, who had announced he’ll retire at the end of the season although it’s likely he has already played in his last game. The Dodgers are carrying 12 pitchers and 13 position players. Ambidextrous reliever Pat Venditte and reliever John Axford, who came over from Toronto at the trade deadline in August, didn’t make the roster.Swanson tore a ligament in his left hand against the New York Mets in the next-to-last series of the regular season. He is one of Atlanta’s top defensive players. At the plate, he was hitting .238, with 14 home runs and 59 RBIs in 136 games.Culberson is making his third straight playoff appearance. He helped the Dodgers to the World Series last year. The Braves’ 25-man roster features 12 pitchers, including right-hander Julio Teheran, one of just two players who were with Atlanta for its last postseason appearance in 2013. Duda helped the Mets win the NL pennant in 2015.The Atlanta outfielders are rookie Ronald Acuna Jr., Lane Adams, Ender Inciarte and Nick Markakis. HOUSTON (AP) — Alex Bregman might be having the best season by any Houston Astros player this year.Only don’t try telling him that.“I have a lot of room to improve and I’m definitely not satisfied … I think I need to get a lot better,” the All-Star third baseman said.Bregman homered for the third straight game and Yuli Gurriel also connected as the Astros won their third in a row, 4-1 over the Minnesota Twins on Monday.Dallas Keuchel (11-10) scattered five hits over six innings and allowed one unearned run. Brad Peacock allowed a single with two outs in the ninth to load the bases, but struck out Jorge Polanco to escape the jam and get his third save.Kyle Gibson (7-12) yielded four hits and four runs — two earned — with five strikeouts in seven innings for his third straight loss.“I kind of struggled the last month or so with a little bit of command and executing pitches … other than a tough couple plays in the second it was pretty good,” Gibson said. There were two outs in the first inning when Bregman hit his 28th home run to give Houston a 1-0 lead. He has reached base safely in 31 straight games, the longest active streak in the majors. He has 13 hits, including four homers and three doubles Andy Pettitte Jersey , and 10 RBIs in his last eight games.“This is the best I’ve seen him play in a short career,” manager A.J. Hinch said. “He’s just very locked in … he’s very under control. He’s very locked in. He knows a ball from a strike. He’s hunting the right pitches. He’s laying off the right pitches. He’s a pretty elite performer.”Bregman has set a career high for home runs and leads the Astros in that category. He ranks first on the team with 89 RBIs and 43 doubles. He also has a triple this year to give him 72 extra-base hits, the most by an Astros player since Lance Berkman had 79 in 2008.“This season has definitely been the best so far personally,” Bregman said. “But I think that’s strictly due to the fact that I’m just trying to go up there and trying to put together a good at-bat and trying to help this team win games.”Tyler White singled to start the Houston second before Gurriel reached on an error by Polanco at shortstop. Brian McCann followed with an RBI single and Evan Gattis then grounded into a double play that allowed another run to score for a 3-0 lead.Gurriel homered off Gibson in the fourth.Keuchel had retired seven straight when Mitch Garver singled with one out in the sixth. An error by shortstop Carlos Correa, who overthrew first base, allowed Robbie Grossman to reach before the Twins cut the lead to 4-1 on an RBI single by Miguel Sano. But Keuchel struck out Jake Cave and Tyler Austin to end the inning and leave the runners stranded.Gibson settled down after the homer to Gurriel and retired the last 11 batters he faced before Matt Magill took over for the eighth.TRAINER’S ROOMAstros: RHP Hector Rondon left the game after deflecting a ball hit by Cave off his right hand in the ninth inning. Rondon’s hand was swollen after the game but he said X-rays were negative and he thinks he’ll be OK after a couple of days. … Houston INF Marwin Gonzalez left after the first inning because of discomfort in his right oblique. … RHP Charlie Morton (shoulder discomfort) played catch for the second straight day and is scheduled to throw a bullpen session in the next couple of days. Hinch said if that goes well he’ll come off the disabled list to start against Boston on Saturday. If he can’t go the Astros will start rookie Josh James, who made his major league debut on Saturday.THEY SAID ITHinch on the ball that hit Rondon: “He’s lucky he put his arm up. If you look at the replay it probably saved his face. I think it even got a little bit of flesh and not so much the bone. Very scary.”UP NEXTJustin Verlander (13-9, 2.78 ERA) will start for Houston against Trevor May (3-0, 1.88) when the series continues on Tuesday night. Verlander ranks second in the American League behind teammate Gerrit Cole with 240 strikeouts this season.
