It’s September , so it’s time for Terrance Gore. The 5-foot-7 speedster has resurfaced with the Chicago Cubs, who purchased his contract from Triple-A Iowa when rosters expanded Saturday. Like the Royals previously, the Cubs will have a chance to turn Gore loose on the bases. The 27-year-old outfielder has played in 50 games in his major league career. He has 11 at-bats, zero hits, 14 runs and 21 stolen bases.Gore made his big league debut with Kansas City in 2014 and had a handful of appearances for the Royals over the past four years. He was traded to the Cubs last month, and they brought him up from the minors when rosters expanded. Of Gore’s 50 big league games in the regular season, 43 have come after the start of September. When rosters expand, there’s more room for a player like Gore, who is about as one-dimensional as they come but can clearly help as a pinch runner. The roster squeeze is tighter in the playoffs Authentic Adrian Peterson Jersey , but the Royals kept Gore for their postseason runs in 2014 and 2015. The Cubs have the best record in the National League at the moment, but they can use Gore’s skill set. They’re tied for 12th in the NL with 56 stolen bases. They’ve also been caught stealing 35 times, the most of any team in the league.Gore is a slightly less extreme version of Herb Washington, Oakland’s baserunning specialist from 1974-75. Washington had 31 steals in his major league career without a single plate appearance. He wasn’t as efficient as Gore, however. Washington was caught stealing 17 times. That’s only happed four times to Gore.Other developments from around the majors:TRIPLE THREAT?A torrid second half has J.D. Martinez making a bit of a Triple Crown bid in the American League. The Boston slugger leads the league with 115 RBIs and is second with 39 homers, one behind Oakland’s Khris Davis. Martinez is also hitting .337, just three points behind teammate Mookie Betts, the league leader.Martinez has never batted higher than .315 in a season, but he’s hitting .359 since the All-Star break Adrian Peterson Jersey Elite , and that has put him in the mix for what would be a surprising batting title. The last seven batting titles in the AL have gone to either Jose Altuve or Miguel Cabrera. Altuve is still a threat this year at .321.When Cabrera won the Triple Crown in 2012, he took MVP honors in a hotly debated race against Mike Trout. Martinez may face an uphill climb for that award, since he has played only 48 games in the field this year.HIGHLIGHTSThe Dodgers, Diamondbacks and Rockies are in a tight race atop the NL West, meaning their head-to-head matchups are crucial. Los Angeles just took three of four from Arizona, with each win by the same score of 3-2. Matt Kemp delivered the decisive hit in each of the final two games — an eighth-inning homer Saturday and a two-run double in the ninth Sunday. Los Angeles also won in its last at-bat Friday, on an eighth-inning homer by Justin Turner. The first-place Dodgers lead Colorado by a half-game and Arizona by one.LINE OF THE WEEKMilwaukee’s Christian Yelich went 6 for 6 and hit for the cycle Wednesday night in a 13-12, 10-inning victory over Cincinnati. Then over the weekend, he came up with a nice encore , hitting his first career grand slam in Sunday’s 9-4 win over Washington. Stacy Revere/Getty ImagesThe Milwaukee Brewers forced a deciding game in the 2018 NLCS with a 7-2victory Friday night over the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 6 at Miller Park in Milwaukee.Jesus Aguilar, Mike Moustakas and Erik Kratz delivered run-scoring hits as part of the Brewers' four-run first inning after David Freese had crushed a leadoff home run for the Dodgers.L.A. threatened a comeback in the fifth when it brought the tying run to the plate, but Corey Knebel came out of the bullpen to secure two key outs and preserve the lead, which Milwaukee never relinquished.Brewers' Depth Will Continue To Prove VitalAlthough much attention was given to the dominance of Brew Crew outfielder Christian Yelich during the second half of the season鈥攁nd rightfully so鈥攖he team's ability to get contributions from anywhere in the order was also crucial to edging the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central. It's a theme that's carried into the club's postseason run and was on full display Friday, as the Brewers got key hits from Aguilar, Moustakas and Kratz. Their hits in the first inning immediately changed the outlook of the game after Los Angeles had grabbed the early lead.MLB MLBFive hits, FOUR runs. The Crew come out SWINGING. #NLCS WrKiDNh7GgIf playoff trends hold, the Dodgers aren't going to give Yelich or Ryan Braun much to hit in Game 7. They have combined for seven walks in the series, as L.A. has been content to force them to chase outside the zone or accept the base on balls to make Milwaukee's other hitters drive in runs. The same could be said on the pitching side. Knebel was one of six Brewers relievers to appear in at least 49 games during the regular season Authentic D.J. Swearinger SR Jersey , and only one of them had an ERA above 4.00 (Taylor Williams). Having so many reliable options out of the bullpen takes away a lot of pressure, especially in a Game 7."Our depth is what's been valuable," managerCraig Counselltold reportersbefore the playoffs. "And we feel like it's helped us and allowed us [to win games], and there's been nights where that doesn't happen."Another strong showing from that unheralded group of secondary contributors Saturday night would likely push Milwaukee into the World Series. Dodgers Must End Power OutageFreese's homer to open Game 6 was just the Dodgers' third of the NLCS. The lack of long balls for an offense with so much pop is a main reason the series is going the distance.Los Angeles ranked second in the majors and first in the National League with 235 home runs during the regular season. The club added eight more during its NLDS destruction of the Atlanta Braves, with six different players going yard in the four-game series. If the Dodgers are going to turn the tide back in their favor for Game 7, it's probably going to take a sudden return to form in the power department. While the onus is mostly on Max Muncy and Cody Bellinger to put their game-changing power on display, the Dodgers featured 10 different players with at least 13 homers during the regular season. So there's enough pop throughout the lineup to make serious noise.Milwaukee's Home-Field Advantage Makes It Game 7 FavoriteThe Brewers have benefited from playing at Miller Park all year.Their 51 home wins during the regular season were tied with the Cubs' for the most in the National League. They went 2-0 in Milwaukee in their sweep of the Colorado Rockies in the Division Series and are now 2-1 in their friendly confines against the Dodgers in the NLCS.Milwaukee Brewers BrewersHome field advantage is real and its spectacular. #OurCrewOurOctober pTQ6nCdyupTypically, home-field advantage isn't a major deal in baseball. Teams playing in their own park win 54 percent of the games in both the regular season and the playoffs, the lowest figures in the four major North American sports D.J. Swearinger SR Jersey Elite , per theAction Network. In a series that's so tightly contested, however, either side will be looking for every small edge it can get. For the Brewers, playing at home has provided a legitimate edge all year. They'll hope that remains true in Game 7 to punch their World Series ticket. What's Next?Game 7 is set for Saturday night at Miller Park with first pitch scheduled for 8:09 p.m. ET. The pivotal clash will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1.

Minnesota will use the “opener” strategy with its pitchers for the first time this season when left-handed reliever Gabriel Moya is expected to start for the Twins against the Texas Rangers on Sunday , following a practice began in May by Tampa Bay and utilized by a handful of other major league teams this year.Right-hander Zack Littell will be recalled from Triple-A Rochester to serve as what Minnesota manager Paul Molitor has dubbed the Twins’ “primary pitcher” after Moya. The Rangers will counter with left-hander Yohander Mendez (0-1, 14.73 ERA) as their starter in the rubber game of the series at Globe Life Park in Arlington, Texas.Article continues below ...Texas hit four homers to beat Minnesota 7-4 on Saturday to snap a five-game losing streak. Rookie Ronald Guzman hit a three-run homer while Nomar Marzara, Adrian Beltre and Rougned Odor hit solo homers. The Twins have been utilizing the “opener” strategy for months at both the Double-A and Triple-A levels. Minnesota decided to push back right-hander Kyle Gibson’s start to Monday in Houston to try the strategy because the Rangers have a left-handed top of their batting order. The “opener” is employed to keep the game’s primary pitcher from facing the top of the lineup early and to be limited to two times through the order.“You don’t want to do it on a whim,” Twins manager Paul Molitor told “There’s always going to be a risk, and then you try to decide in the game when it’s worthwhile to try to find out if this is something that’s going to be helpful to help your team win. You’re looking for an advantage.”The Rangers activated pitcher Bartolo Colon off the disabled list Saturday, but then scratched him from Sunday’s start against the Twins because of a stomach virus. Colon hasn’t pitched since Aug. 20 because of stiffness in his back. The 45-year-old is a free agent after this season. The 23-year-old Mendez is set to be recalled Sunday to make his second start and third appearance of 2018. He has never faced Minnesota.Mendez is being brought back to the big leagues for the first time since June 19, when he was demoted to Class A after violating team rules in Kansas City.“He took the challenges with the right attitude, went back down Denard Span Jersey , and he’s going to get an opportunity to come back up tomorrow and start for us,” Texas manager Jeff Banister said of Mendez. The Rangers are satisfied that Mendez has done everything asked of him since the demotion.“Reports I got were that he worked his rear end off, physically and mentally, and took all the challenges and met all of them, even when they were a little bit tough,” Banister said. “The thing that I like about our coaching staff and this organization is that things like that happen. (But if) you go do your work, you’re given that opportunity to clean that slate, go do what you need to do.”Mendez exited his last start for Triple-A Round Rock on Tuesday at home against Memphis after two innings when he was struck on his left arm by a batted ball. He is expected to be fully healthy for Sunday’s start. SAN DIEGO (AP) — The San Diego Padres have promoted yet another prospect from the minor leagues, and this time it’s the best one yet.The Padres selected the contract of 21-year-old Luis Urias Guillermo Heredia Jersey , one of baseball’s top prospects who is expected to be their second baseman of the future.Urias was set to bat second against Felix Hernandez in his big league debut in the opener of a two-game series against the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night.Urias’ promotion comes as the rebuilding Padres are on pace to lose 100 games for the first time since their infamous Fire Sale season of 1993.The Padres brought up Urias even though Triple-A El Paso has qualified for the Pacific Coast League playoffs.“We felt like he’d done enough in the month of August,” manager Andy Green said. “He played really, really well. He was kind of challenged at the beginning of the month to kind of step up his game because there was the belief he had more inside of him and he did a great job. He’s a guy we’ve been talking about all year that the time would come, and when would the time be, and we got to the point where felt the time was now. It gives him the opportunity to play over a month in the big leagues the rest of the year.”The arrival of Urias marks the beginning of another wave of talent coming from the prospect-rich farm system to the big league squad, which at 50-83 has the worst record in the NL.He hit .296 with a .398 on-base percentage with Triple-A El Paso. He hit eight homers and drove in 45 runs, with 67 walks and 109 strikeouts.Urias signed with the Padres as an international free agent in December 2013 when he was 16.His first call after the promotion was to his parents in Mexico.“I always thought it would be a great feeling. It was something that I cannot explain right now,” Urias said. “I was so happy, especially when I called my dad and my mom. That was a feeling that I will never forget.”The Padres have one of worst offenses in the majors. Green knows bringing in one guy won’t radically change the production.“He’s a guy we believe in ,” Green said. “We love his on-base skills. It’s a good spot in the lineup. Just in general we’ve struggled to get on base, and he’s always done that very well. Whether he starts off doing that well in the big leagues or it takes a little while, we believe he’s going to do that very well for a long time.”“I’m the player that I can get on base,” Urias said. “I think that’s my type of play, to put the ball in play and score a couple of runs.”Green said Urias will also play some at shortstop.

Scott Taetsch/Getty ImagesThe MLB non-waiver trade deadline of Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET is rapidly approaching , but there won't be any players left on the trading block at the rate they are being dealt. On Thursday, Toronto Blue Jays southpaw J.A. Happ became a New York Yankee, Texas Rangers starting pitcher Cole Hamels traveled north to the Chicago Cubs (per Evan P. Grant of the Dallas Morning News), reliever Jonny Venters went from Tampa Bay to Atlanta and Chicago White Sox closer Joakim Soria joined the Milwaukee Brewers.Rumors continue to fly fast for others on the block, and here's a look at some news on three notable position players. Asdrubal CabreraNew York Mets second baseman Asdrubal Cabrera had a monster night at the dish on Thursday, going 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBI in a 12-6 win over the scorching-hot Pittsburgh Pirates. That output left him with 18 home runs, 58 RBI and a .817 OPS after 98 games played this season. With the New York Mets sitting 14 games under .500, it's in their best interest to deal Cabrera while his stock is high.Per Buster Olney of ESPN, the Arizona Diamondbacks could be interested:Buster Olney Buster_ESPNArizona checking into Asdrubal Cabrera, as it evaluates infield optionsThe D-backs are fighting to keep pace with the National League West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers, who sit 1.5 games ahead of Arizona in the division standings. From a long-term perspective, L.A. clearly has the edge after acquiring shortstop and four-time All-Star Manny Machado. Arizona has to make some plays before the deadline to try to keep pace, and acquiring Cabrera would certainly help.Through Thursday, Arizona had just the 23rd-ranked OPS in the bigs (.705). Cabrera would certainly boost the offense down the stretch run. Mike MoustakasLike Cabrera, Kansas City Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas is a prominent hitter on a team playing out the string. The Royals sit in last place in the American League Central and need to undergo a significant rebuilding process. That may mean trading away Moustakas, who was a key member of the 2015 World Series team.Per Jon Heyman of Fancred Sports, the New York Yankees could be in the mix:Jon Heyman JonHeymanYankees have considered Mike Moustakas. See the asking price as high for now.Moustakas is hitting the cover off the ball this year, smacking 20 home runs to go along with a .778 OPS. The problem is that Moose isn't a great fit for the Yankees, who have one of the deepest lineups in baseball.Miguel Andujar (12 home runs, 41 RBI, .826 OPS) has done an excellent job at third, Moustakas' regular position. The Royals slugger could conceivably play first base or moonlight at designated hitter Andy Pettitte Jersey , but first baseman Greg Bird is rounding into form after an injury-plagued start (.800 OPS in July), and DH is always rotated between other Yankees' sluggers such as Giancarlo Stanton, Gary Sanchez and Aaron Judge.Granted, Sanchez and Judge are both on disabled list stints right now, but where would Moustakas fit when that duo comes back before the playoffs?Ultimately, acquiring Moustakas would almost seem like an unnecessary luxury. He'd be better off on a team that needs to fill a gap at the hot corner.Adam JonesThe Baltimore Orioles have traded Manny Machado and Zach Britton, and now the next player to go might be center fielder Adam Jones, a five-time All-Star who has been with the O's since 2008.Per Jerry Crasnick of ESPN, "one source familiar with the discussions said the odds are "55-45" that Jones changes teams between now and Tuesday's deadline." He also noted that "as multiple outlets have reported, theCleveland IndiansandPhiladelphia Philliesboth have interest in Jones."Jones is having a respectable season at the plate, swatting 10 home runs, knocking in 38 runners and posting a .724 OPS. On the flip side, he is having his worst season in the field (-1.2 defensive WAR, per Baseball Reference).Still, Jones would be a valuable pickup for a playoff-contending team. Of note, Cleveland seems like the obvious landing spot, so much so that it would be surprising if Jones doesn't land there should he get dealt.Michael Brantley, who has 12 homers, 57 RBI and an .823 OPS this year, has been the only consistent mainstay for the Tribe outfield this year. Elsewhere, the team has been beset by numerous injuries and hitting slumps. Jones can come in and lock down center field as the team prepares for the playoffs. The way Tampa Bay’s Joey Wendle sees it, it’s really quite simple.“We’re having fun. We’re playing relaxed Jose Cruz Jr. Jersey ,” Wendle told a television audience after the Rays won their seventh game in a row — a 5-1 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Saturday night at The Trop. With the series already won, the Rays, eight games above .500 for the first time this season, send ace Blake Snell to the mound to face former teammate Nathan Eovaldi in Sunday’s series finale.Article continues below ...“We’re playing just good fun baseball, fundamentally sound,” Wendle said. “Our pitching staff just night after night, it’s just been unbelievable.“It seems like offensively we contribute one through nine — somebody’s coming up with the big hit every night.”And now, as Wendle and manager Kevin Cash talking about newfound confidence, they turn to Snell, who is 3-0 in August after coming off the disabled list, 7-1 in his last eight starts and 15-5 with a 2.07 ERA this season. He has also handled the first-place Red Sox to the tune of 2-0 with an 0.95 ERA in three starts.Last weekend at Fenway Park, the Red Sox missed Snell, who pitched the finale of the series against the Yankees in the Bronx. The Red Sox won the first two games of that weekend series. The Rays won Sunday, ripped off four straight over the lowly Kansas City Royals and topped the Red Sox twice — by a combined count of 15-4.The club record for consecutive wins is 12 in 2004.“Our pitching … we’ve been on a nice little run here and it’s been outstanding,” Cash said. ” … Any time you go up against that team, that lineup, and you limit them offensively, you’re doing a lot of things correctly.”The Red Sox, who saw their lead over the Yankees shrink to seven games (six in the loss column), have not been swept in a series all season. They have lost five of their last seven games. They have lost a series for the first time in their last 15.“They’ve been throwing the ball well for a while,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora said of the Rays. “They throw the ball WELL here … we’re competing, but that’s good stuff over there. They have a lot to do with it.“Tomorrow , hey, we’ve got our hands full. He’s the guy … he’s been great against us. We’ll see how we react to it. We’ll go out there and compete. We’ve been good on getaway days and day games — you guys know all the stats — so it would be a good day to put everything together and finish this series and strong and turn the page on this stadium (for the year).”Eovaldi, acquired from the Rays in the deal that sent Jalen Beeks, winner of two of the Boston games in long relief, to St. Petersburg, started his Red Sox career with two scoreless outings but has had two bad starts of the last three. Overall, he is 5-5 with a 3.81 ERA this season.Eovaldi has never faced the Rays, but Carlos Gomez is 4-for-11 (.364) against him. Kevin Kiermaier, the only other Tampa player to face the right-hander, is 1-for-6 (.167), but the hit is a home run.Tampa Bay’s Tommy Pham returned after suffering a dislocated finger earlier in the week and hit a home run in the win.Besides Sandy Leon, who is 6-for-10 (.600), the Red Sox have some ugly numbers against Snell in his young career. Mitch Moreland, who returned to the lineup Saturday after missing almost two full games with a knee bruise, is 0-for-12, Eduardo Nunez is 0-for-7, Jackie Bradley Jr. 1-for-11 (.091), Xander Bogaerts 2-for-15 (.133), J.D. Martinez 1-for-7 (.143) and Steve Pearce 2-for-9 (.222) against the left-hander.Martinez, who has flirted with the triple crown through much of the season, passed teammate Mookie Betts in batting average Saturday night — his two hits leaving him at .337. Betts fell to .335 with an 0-for-4.

ATLANTA (AP) — Freddie Freeman put the Atlanta Braves ahead Rollie Fingers Jersey , then watched from first base as they almost give away the lead — and possibly their whole season.“My heart’s still pounding,” he said, moments after the last out. “That’s how we’ve been all year.”Reliever Arodys Vizcaino escaped his own jam in a nervy ninth inning and the Braves stopped the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-5 Sunday night, avoiding a sweep and cutting their deficit in the NL Division Series to 2-1.“I like our chances. We’ve got a uniform on, so we know we’ve got a chance,” Freeman said.Rookie Ronald Acuna Jr. hit a grand slam that helped the Braves build an early 5-0 lead. After the Dodgers rallied to tie it, Freeman homered in the sixth. In the ninth, the Dodgers got runners on first and second with no outs after a single and a walk. Vizcaino came back from a 3-0 count to strike out slugger Max Muncy, and followed up by fanning Manny Machado on a wild pitch that moved the runners to second and third.Because the Braves had already used their allotment of six mound visits, no one could go out to talk with the Atlanta closer, to give him a moment to settle down. Not that he needed a break, apparently. With the entire crowd at SunTrust Park standing, chanting and chopping, Vizcaino fanned a swinging Brian Dozier to end it.“Credit to our guys for fighting back,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “… We had our chances. And those guys made some pitches and got out of some traffic, but our guys stressed them , got on base, and gave ourselves an opportunity. But yeah, to take us over the top and take the lead again, we couldn’t get that one extra hit.”Game 4 is Monday afternoon at Atlanta.Shut out in the first two games at Dodger Stadium, the NL East champion Baby Braves bounced back.Acuna connected in the second, right after Dodgers rookie Walker Buehler walked Braves starter Sean Newcomb on four pitches with the bases loaded.“He continues to amaze,” Freeman said of Acuna. “I don’t think we needed or wanted anybody else in that situation.”Roberts stuck with Buehler, who allowed no baserunners in the next three innings.“It was good to see him recalibrate and give us five innings to at some point save our pen,” Roberts said.Buehler gave up five runs on only two hits and three walks in five innings.“This one is on me,” Buehler said, adding there is “no excuse for the second inning. … Sometimes you just lose it. I’m proud of the way I found the zone again after that and moving forward.”Freeman connected on the first pitch from former teammate Alex Wood to put Atlanta back on top.“Hopefully we’ll have some more big moments during this postseason and this isn’t the only one,” Freeman said. Chris Taylor hit a two-run homer and Muncy added a tying homer in the fifth to lead the comeback for Los Angeles.Tagged at the outset, Buehler regained control as the Dodgers began their rally. Newcomb was pulled after walking a pair of walks in the third and Justin Turner hit an RBI single off Kevin Gausman. Taylor also scored when Acuna bobbled the ball in left field for an error.Taylor connected off Gausman, and Muncy added a tying homer off Max Fried in the fifth. The Dodgers threatened in the sixth. Matt Kemp led off the inning with a double, but with one out was thrown out on shortstop Charlie Culberson’s throw to the plate.MICKEY WHO?At 20, Acuna became the youngest player to hit a postseason grand slam — Mickey Mantle was 21 when he did it for the New York Yankees in the 1953 World Series.Mantle? That’s a new name for Acuna.“No Dave Henderson Jersey , I don’t recognize him,” he said through a translator. “I wasn’t even born.”NO SWEEP FOR YOULos Angeles was denied its second straight NLDS sweep after winning three straight over Arizona in 2017.RECORD ATTENDANCEThe attendance was 42,385, setting a SunTrust Park record in the second-year stadium’s first postseason game.UP NEXTThe Dodgers are expected to start LHP Rich Hill (11-5, 3.66) when the series continues on Monday. Hill pitched seven scoreless innings in an 8-2 win over Atlanta on July 26.The Braves will start RHP Mike Foltynewicz, who gave up four runs and three hits in two innings in Thursday night’s 6-0 Game 1 loss.“He’s raring to go and itching to get the ball, and it’s still elimination,” Braves manager Brian Snitker said. “So we’re going to try and go with the best we got.” ATLANTA — The Atlanta Braves, losers of at least 90 games each of the past three seasons, can clinch an unlikely National League East title on Saturday.Mike Foltynewicz (11-10, 2.90 ERA) will get the start for the Braves at SunTrust Park as they try to close out the second-place Philadelphia Phillies with more than a week remaining in the regular season.Foltynewicz, a first-time All-Star in 2018, will be opposed by former Cy Young Award winner Jake Arrieta (10-9, 3.77 ERA) as the Phillies try to avoid elimination for at least another day after losing the first two games of the series.Article continues below ...The Braves (86-68) went to work late in both games against the bullpen of the Phillies (78-75), winning 6-5 on Friday night after an 8-3 victory in the series opener the previous night. With a 7 1/2-game lead and the magic number down to two, the Braves can clinch first place before their home fans on Sunday if they don’t do it Saturday.Cy Young candidate Aaron Nola (16-5 , 2.44 ERA) will start the series finale for the Phillies, with Anibal Sanchez (6-6, 2.44 ERA) getting the call for Atlanta. The Braves play their final six games on the road, including a three-game series — that was once highly anticipated — in Philadelphia to end the regular season. It was Sean Newcomb’s turn to start on Saturday for the Braves, but the struggling left-hander was skipped and put in the bullpen for the time being despite leading the team with 12 victories.Newcomb’s 12 wins top the Braves, but he posted an 11.34 ERA while losing his past four home starts. “I don’t think he needed a break. He just wasn’t pitching that great,” Braves manager Brian Snitker said of the 25-year-old. “I talked to him about that. We are going to go with the other guys pretty much. Just trying to pitch the guys who were going a little better.” Foltynewicz is 1-1 with a 1.96 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 23 innings in four starts versus the Phillies this season, and 4-3 with a 3.51 ERA in 11 career outings against them. The 26-year-old right-hander failed to last at least five innings for just the second time this season in a loss to St. Louis on Monday, but he had pitched a complete game in his previous start at San Francisco.Arietta is 4-1 with a 2.29 ERA in six career starts against the Braves, carrying over the previous success he had with the Chicago Cubs to his lone outing for the Phillies this season. The 32-year-old right-hander worked 6 2/3 scoreless innings in a victory at Philadelphia on May 23, allowing seven hits and a walk while striking out seven.Arrieta’s performance has been in decline the past eight weeks or so, mirroring the downturn of his team. Since pitching eight scoreless innings on Aug. 3 at Arizona, he has gone 1-3 with a 6.02 ERA in seven starts.“What’s done is done. I’ve got to move forward and just try to be better,” Arrieta said.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Kendrys Morales had his home run streak snapped at seven games by the Baltimore Orioles Authentic Derwin James Jersey , who ended an eight-game skid by defeating the Toronto Blue Jays 7-0 on Monday night.Striving to tie the major league record of homering in eight straight games, Morales went 0 for 3 with a walk and did not hit the ball out of the infield. In his final chance, the Toronto slugger swung through a slider from Paul Fry to strike out in the eighth inning.Though he failed to match the mark shared by Dale Long, Don Mattingly and Ken Griffey Jr., Morales owns the big league record for successive games with a home run by a switch-hitter. He also owns the franchise record for consecutive games with a long ball.Facing Baltimore rookie David Hess, against whom he homered last week, Morales struck out in the first inning, grounded out in the fourth and drew a four-pitch walk in the sixth.Hess (3-8) tossed six innings of four-hit ball to earn his first win since May 25. He was 0-7 in his previous 12 starts, though he did pitch very well against Toronto his last time out.The game was scoreless until the Orioles broke through in the sixth against Sam Gaviglio (3-7).Trey Mancini homered and matched a career high with five RBIs as Baltimore improved to 2-12 against Toronto with its first win since Aug. 18.ASTROS 11, ATHLETICS 4HOUSTON (AP) — Alex Bregman and Tyler White homered and drove in four runs apiece as Houston rallied to beat Oakland in the opener of their AL West showdown. It was the sixth straight win for the first-place Astros, who moved to 2 1/2 games ahead of the Athletics.George Springer and Jose Altuve each drove in a run during a five-run third inning that erased an early 4-0 deficit. This was the first game with Springer, Altuve and Carlos Correa in the lineup together since June 25. The White Sox have won 10 of 13 and clinched their first winning month this season by improving to 15-10 in August.Rodon is 5-0 with a 1.84 ERA in his past nine starts. The 25-year-old left-hander hasn’t lost since June 30.New York (83-48) missed an opportunity to gain ground on the idle Red Sox, falling 6 1/2 games back of the AL East leaders. The Angels added two insurance runs on shortstop Trevor Story’s throwing error.Ohtani hit a three-run shot and Trout added his first homer since returning from injury for the Angels, who have won 11 of their last 12 meetings with Colorado. SAN FRANCISCO — The hero of Tuesday’s win with the bat will be rewarded with two extra days off to rest his arm when the San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres complete a three-game series on Wednesday night.Madison Bumgarner delivered a game-winning, pinch-hit single in the bottom of the 12th inning on Tuesday night, recording the first walk-off hit of his career. The single to left field through a drawn-in infield scored Gorkys Hernandez, who had led off the 12th with a triple.Article continues below ...The hit improved Bumgarner’s career average as a pinch hitter to .400 (4-for-10). The RBI was his first in that role. The RBI was the 58th of Bumgarner’s career overall, 21 more than any other pitcher since he debuted for the Giants in 2009.It wasn’t the first time this season that Bumgarner was chiefly responsible for a Giants win over San Diego. He threw eight innings of shutout ball the only time he pitched against the Padres in a 3-0 win on June 21.Nonetheless, the Giants have scratched Bumgarner from his scheduled start against San Diego on Wednesday in order for him to face the rival Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday.Right-hander Casey Kelly (0-2, 2.89) will face the Padres instead. The first-year Giant has gone up against the Padres twice in relief in his career, allowing just two hits and no runs in 3 1/3 innings without getting a decision. Both those appearances were for the Atlanta Braves in 2016.Tuesday’s dramatic win came a little more than 24 hours after the Giants made the first of what is expected to be a series of major moves before the start of the 2019 season on Monday , firing general manager Bobby Evans.Hunter Pence, a free agent at season’s end and high on the projected list of Giants castoffs, contributed two hits, including a home run, and scored three of the club’s five runs in Tuesday’s win.Pence has taken advantage of increased playing time since the team dealt Andrew McCutchen to the New York Yankees last month, going 9-for-his-last-23 (.391) with one double, two homers and four RBIs in his last six games. The 35-year-old, an inspirational leader in two of the Giants’ three championships this decade, earned $18.5 million this season. His recent hot streak has raised his batting average to just .228.Pence has gone just 3-for-14 (.214) in his career against right-hander Luis Perdomo (1-6, 7.56), the Padres’ scheduled starter in Wednesday’s series finale.Perdomo will be making his first start since being recalled from the minors earlier this month. He hasn’t faced the Giants this season but has gone head-to-head with them on nine occasions in the past, seven times as a starter, while compiling a 2-0 record and 3.80 ERA.Tuesday’s loss was the Padres’ 11th in 18 meetings with the Giants this season and came despite out-hitting the hosts 12-9.San Diego opened the series with a 5-0 win on Monday night.

KANSAS CITY Brandon Crawford Jersey , Mo. (AP) — Reliever Wily Peralta and the Kansas City Royals agreed to a $3.25 million, one-year contract Wednesday, ensuring one of the few bright spots in the team’s shaky bullpen will be back next season. The deal includes a $2.25 million salary next year and a $7 million mutual option for 2020 with a $1 million buyout. It replaces his previous contract, which contained a $3.25 million club option for 2019 with a $25,000 buyout.Peralta also can earn a series of performance bonuses: $125,000 each for 35 and 45 games finished; $200,000 for 50 games finished; and $250,000 for reaching 30, 55, 85, 116 and 120 points with four points for each start, two for relief outings of two innings or more and one for a relief appearances of fewer than two innings. The 29-year-old right-hander made a career-high 37 appearances last season, posting a 3.67 ERA and going 14 for 14 in save chances. He became the first Royals pitcher a perfect save percentage and at least 10 saves. In other roster news , right-hander Nate Karns chose free agency over an outright assignment to Triple-A Omaha and left-hander Jerry Vasto was claimed off waivers by the Cubs. NEW YORK (AP) — Cincinnati catcher Tucker Barnhart could hear the difference at Great American Ball Park, one of six major league stadiums that set record lows for attendance this year.“It’s pretty hard to not notice it when you can hear the light towers buzzing,” he said.Major League Baseball’s average attendance dropped 4 percent to 28,830, its lowest since 2003 after 14 consecutive seasons topping 30,000.Baltimore’s Camden Yards, Chicago’s Guaranteed Rate Field, Minnesota’s Target Field, Miami’s Marlins Park and Pittsburgh’s PNC Park also drew their smallest attendance since opening as part of a ballpark boom. In a season of unusually cold and wet weather, 17 of the 30 teams experienced drops.Major League Baseball attributed the decrease primarily “connected to the historically bad weather we faced back in the spring” and noted the percentage drop decreased markedly after May 1.Total attendance fell to 69.63 million from 72.67 million last year and a high of 79.5 million in 2007. The average is down 14.4 percent from its high of 32,785 in 2007, the last year before the Great Recession. It had not been this low since 28,013 in 2003.“I think it is a concerning number Jeff Samardzija Jersey , and a think a lot of factors go into it in today’s climate, particularly when fans have as many options as they have in where they’re spending their entertainment dollar,” players’ association head Tony Clark said.On-field success and attendance usually are linked.“When teams rebuild, it always has an attendance effect,” baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said. The NL champion Los Angeles Dodgers set a club record, Colorado drew its biggest crowds since 2001, World Series champion Houston since 2007 and the New York Yankees since 2012 — including a new Yankee Stadium record 23 sellouts. But advance sales were down for several teams that jettisoned veterans and went with youth. Under the five-year labor contract agreed to before the 2017 season, limits were placed on spending for international amateurs following restrictions that began in 2012 on amateurs who reside in the U.S. More cost certainty for controllable players may have encouraged more teams to rebuild at the same time.“If our system encourages teams to be either all in or all out, there are some things worth discussing and we look forward to having those conversations,” Clark said. The Orioles (47-115), White Sox (62-100), Marlins (63-98) and Reds (67-95) had among the poorest records, while the Twins had a losing season at 78-84.“People have a lot of decisions to make in their life about what they’re doing with their commitments and money and what have you. It’s up to us to give them something they want to embrace ,” Baltimore manager Buck Showalter said. “Attendance is down. It’s our fault, not theirs.”But the Pirates contended until late in the season and finished 82-79, yet fell by more than 450,000 to 1.65 million, the smallest for the franchise since 1996 at Three Rivers Stadium. Perhaps the cause was a lingering effect from trading away stars Andrew McCutchen and Gerrit Cole the previous offseason.Cleveland fell by 120,000 even though the Indians won their third straight AL Central title.Despite a 90-72 record and third-place finish in the AL East, Tampa Bay was 29th in the major leagues at 1.15 million. The Rays and Oakland Athletics are the last two teams seeking new ballparks.“I know it’s a hassle getting to the ballpark. I get it. Even if we’d have won 100 games, who knows if it would have been different?” Rays outfielder Kevin Kiermaier said.In its first season under new chief executive office Derek Jeter, the Marlins drew 811,000 after trading star slugger Giancarlo Stanton to the New York Yankees, the low for a franchise that started in 1993 and the fewest home fans for any major league team since the 2004 Montreal Expos in their last season before moving to Washington, D.C. The Marlins said they changed their counting method to include only tickets sold. Still, the vast amount of empty seats is unsustainable.“That’s something we need to improve Mark Melancon Jersey ,” Jeter said. “Where we’re starting from, the only way we can go is up.”Bad weather played a factor in the falloff, especially earn in the season. The average of 26,867 through April was down 9.4 percent from 29,654 through the first full month in 2017. There were 54 postponements, the most since 1989, and 26 of them were higher-drawing weekend games. Manfred said 35 games in April had a temperature of 40 degrees or less and a quarter of the games were played in 50 degrees or under.“We got ourselves in a hole that I’ve never seen since I’ve been in baseball,” said Manfred, who first got involved in the sport as an outside counsel in 1987.Still, he knows changes in the sport and the audience have to be examined constantly.“All live entertainment is challenging because of changing habits,” Manfred said.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Ryan Lavarnway was an unlikely candidate to get a big hit in a pressure situation for the Pirates. The 30-year-old fourth-string catcher was playing his 142nd career game Wily Peralta Jersey , spread out over seven seasons with five teams, and spent most of 2018 with Triple-A Indianapolis. In his second major league at-bat of the season, Lavarnway drove in the winning run with a pinch-hit single in the 11th inning, giving Pittsburgh a 2-1 victory over the Kansas City Royals.Jameson Taillon had a career-high 11 strikeouts and Colin Moran homered for Pittsburgh. It was the second straight night a backup catcher came through for the Pirates. Jacob Stallings had a game-ending single on Monday night.Stallings and Lavarnway split catching duties all season in Indianapolis before being called up for depth in September. Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said at the time he wanted to honor the work Lavarnway had done this season.“This organization has been so great to me,” Lavarnway said. “I’m just so grateful for everything about them, really. I really feel like myself as a person and as a player here.”Starling Marte led off the 11th with an infield single off Burch Smith (1-6). Josh Bell walked and Burch struck out Francisco Cervelli before Adam Frazier was intentionally walked to load the bases, setting up Lavarnway’s walk-off hit to shallow center.“I was just trying to not to do much,” Lavarnway said. “I think it would be human nature to try to go up there and hit it into the river.”Taillon pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing four hits and a walk. His previous career high in strikeouts was 10, set on July 12.“I worked the top of the strike zone a little bit more than usual , I would say, and then my curveball was the best it’s been the second half,” Taillon said.It looked like the Royals might get to Taillon in the top of the seventh. With runners on second and third, Brian Goodwin hit a flyball to right fielder Pablo Reyes, who threw out Ryan O’Hearn at the plate. It was the first outfield assist for Reyes, a rookie playing his second game in right field.“A great way to end the outing,” Taillon said. “It’s a good feeling.”Pinch-hitter Hunter Dozier tied the game in the ninth with a double off Pirates closer Felipe Vazquez that scored Jorge Bonifacio. Left fielder Corey Dickerson threw to shortstop Jordy Mercer, who relayed home to throw out Salvador Perez and preserve the tie.Vazquez had not blown a save since May 31, a string of 24 consecutive opportunities converted.Kyle Crick (3-2) retired the side on 10 pitches in the 11th to earn the win.Moran had a pinch-hit home run with two outs in the seventh, his 10th homer this season.Eric Skoglund allowed three hits and struck out two in six innings Alex Gordon Jersey , his first start this season in which he did not allow a run. It was his second start since returning from an ankle injury Sept. 7“He threw the ball great,” manager Ned Yost said. “Six strong innings. Did a really nice job. Got to 67 (pitches) last time out and was starting to get a little tired. Was in the mid-80s this time and felt great. So he’s getting back on track.”The Pirates improved to 14-5 in interleague play, the second-best record in the majors behind the Boston Red Sox.TRAINER’S ROOMPirates: Frazier did not start but said he was “fine” after fouling a ball off his right knee and leaving Monday’s game with discomfort. He grounded into a fielder’s choice in the ninth and remained in the game in left field. … C Elias Diaz (hamstring) made his first appearance since Aug. 31. He walked as a pinch-hitter in the ninth.Royals: Perez was a late scratch with a recurrence of a nagging left thumb injury. He singled in the ninth. … RHP Jorge Lopez (bruised rib) has still not thrown a between-starts bullpen session. His next turn in the rotation is Thursday against Detroit. The team has not announced a probable pitcher.UP NEXTRoyals: Heath Fillmyer (3-1, 4.76 ERA) is scheduled to start the series finale Wednesday. The rookie allowed 10 runs over his previous two starts.Pirates: Chris Archer (4-8, 4.66 ERA) has lost three straight decisions and is 1-4 with a 5.19 ERA since returning from an abdominal injury in early July. The Chicago Cubs were supposed to have a travel day on Thursday. It was going to be a respite before a nine-day road trip against three potential playoff teams. But an early-season rainout has changed that plan and created a one-game stop in Atlanta before the lengthy swing. The Cubs will play the National League East-leading Atlanta Braves on Thursday in a makeup of a game that was rained out on May 17.Chicago will send left-hander Mike Montgomery (4-4, 3.62 ERA) to the mound to oppose Atlanta right-hander Mike Foltynewicz (10-8, 2.67).Article continues below ...Neither team comes into the game rested. The Cubs had to finish a suspended game on Wednesday before playing their regularly scheduled game against the New York Mets. Chicago won the suspended game in 11 innings and lost the regular game before flying to Atlanta. The Braves only had one game, but a pair of rain delays totaling one hour, 47 minutes didn’t allow the 8-5 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays to be completed until 12:30 a.m. Atlanta leads Philadelphia by 3 1/2 games in the division.Montgomery will be activated from the disabled list to make his 14th start of the season. He was sidelined on Aug. 14 with left shoulder inflammation and hasn’t pitched since Aug. 11 when he threw one scoreless inning of relief. He threw a 35-pitch bullpen session on Monday and declared himself fit for action.“It was a good two weeks for me to give (my arm) a refresher,” Montgomery said. “It’s one of those things where it could’ve gone bad if I didn’t address it. I didn’t want something that could take two weeks to cost me the rest of the season.”Montgomery’s last start came on Aug. 7 at Kansas City , when he pitched six scoreless innings. He has pitched at least five innings in all 13 of his starts.Montgomery has made four career appearances against Atlanta. He is 1-1 with a 2.57 ERA, all with the Cubs. He has a 3.27 ERA in his last two starts against the Braves, both in 2017. In his only start at SunTrust Park on July 19, 2017, Montgomery allowed two hits and one run over six innings and hit a home run. He has made two scoreless relief appearances covering three innings against the Braves this season.Foltynewicz has been excellent during his five starts in August. He is 3-1 with a 1.38 ERA in 32 2/3 innings with 36 strikeouts. He had a three-game winning streak snapped in his last start despite allowing just one run on two hits over six innings with eight strikeouts in a 1-0 loss to Miami on Friday.“I thought he was really good,” Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said. “To just give up one run, that’s pretty good.”Foltynewicz has made one start against the Cubs this season, earning no decision when he allowed one unearned run in five innings on May 15. He has never beaten the Cubs in three career starts, going 0-2 with a 5.06 ERA.

PHOENIX — The Colorado Rockies used another strong pitching performance to stay on track Saturday.Right-hander Antonio Senzatela gave up three hits in seven innings in a 5-1 victory over Arizona , following German Marquez’s dominant outing Friday as the Rockies took the first two games of a three-game series. The Rockies trail the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West and the St. Louis Cardinals for the final wild-card spot. Each deficit is 1 1/2 games. The Diamondbacks, who led the division Sept. 1, is one loss away from elimination.Article continues below ...“We need to get it done, no matter how we get it,” said Colorado catcher Chris Iannetta, whose two-out, two-run single triggered a decisive four-run third inning.“We just need to get wins. We don’t have many games left. We need some help from teams in front of us to lose some games, and we have to win a bunch. It’s going to be difficult, but we’ll just try to win one each day and see what happens.”Colorado left-hander Kyle Freeland (15-7 , 2.95) is to face Arizona righty Zack Godley (14-10, 4.79) in Sunday’s series finale. Freeland has made nine consecutive quality starts. If home field means anything, Colorado might have a bit of an edge as it looks to make up the necessary ground in the final week of the season. The Rockies, who have played one fewer game than the Dodgers, will play their final seven games at Coors Field against NL East teams Philadelphia and Washington. Both have been eliminated from the playoffs. The Rockies set a franchise record with 43 road wins after taking the first two games of the Arizona series Saturday and also are 41-33 at home. The Dodgers will play their final game this season against San Diego on Sunday. They have road series remaining against Arizona and the Padres. St. Louis has a three-game home series against contending Milwaukee beginning Monday before closing the season with a three-game set against the NL Central-leading Cubs at Wrigley Field.“I think most teams feel comfortable and confident at home,” Colorado manager Bud Black said. “I think we do. We’re much better at home the second half of the season. We play the schedule.”Arizona has lost 11 of 14 with the troubles coming because of a sluggish offense compounded by a suddenly leaky bullpen.“I go back to Jim Carrey ‘you’re saying there a chance’,” Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said. “I’ve going to live until I can take no more breaths, and I feel like the whole clubhouse will do the same.”Freeland, a native of Denver who was the Rockies’ first round pick in the 2014 draft Giancarlo Stanton Jersey , has developed into a star in his second season in the rotation, and with right-hander Marquez appears to give the Rockies a dominant 1-2 punch at the top of the rotation for years to come. Freeland is 25. Marquez 23. Freeland is fifth in the NL in ERA and victories and fourth in WAR, and has only gotten sharper as the season has moved along. He is 9-1 with a 2.43 ERA in his last 18 starts, and has given up more than three runs only once in that stretch. The Rockies have won 14 of his 18 starts during that span.“He’s doing what successful pitchers do,” Black said. “He’s throwing a lot of strikes in good spots within his repertoire, and his repertoire is solid major league stuff across the board. He pitches with a great deal of aggressiveness and confidence. He’s been able to make a pitch when he needs to, to get out of an inning and get out of a jam.”The Rockies have won three of Freeland’s previous four starts against the Diamondbacks, although he is 1-1 with a 4.76 ERA against them this season and 2-2 against them in his career. He gave up four runs in five innings in his only start at Chase Field.“Changing speeds very well, much better than he did a year ago ,” Black said. “The consistency of his slider is much improved from last year. Fastball command much improved. The strikeout/walk ratio are in order for his type of stuff. He’s fielding his position. He’s holding runners well. All the things that make his successful.”Godley was pushed back until Sunday to give Zack Greinke and Patrick Corbin the first two cracks the Rockies in this series, a maneuver designed to give Arizona the best chance to win this series and in the final week of the season.Like Freeland, Godley has set career highs in virtually every statistical category in his first full season in the rotation, although he has battled consistency at times. He leads the NL with 12 hit batters and 16 wild pitches, and his 1.45 WHIP ranks 30th of the 31 NL qualifiers.Godley has not been at his best since mid-August, going 1-4 with a 7.42 ERA in his last six starts. Included in that was a 13-2 loss at Colorado on Sept. 10, the first contest of a four-game series in which the Rockies won three. He is 1-1 with a 6.14 ERA in three starts against the Rockies this season and is 4-1, 3.99 in eight career outings. A look at what’s happening around the major leagues today:FENWAY FRESHMANDodgers ace Clayton Kershaw will pitch at Fenway Park for the first time when he starts Game 1 of the World Series against the Red Sox. The oldest park in the majors has a lot of quirks that can present many challenges for newcomers, but Kershaw says he’s focusing on Mookie Betts Alex Rodriguez Jersey , J.D. Martinez and the lineup of a team that won 108 games. The Dodgers haven’t played an interleague game at Fenway since 2010, meaning Yasiel Puig, Cody Bellinger and Max Muncy will be getting their first looks on the field. The team took turns Monday throwing balls at a small, square space in the Green Monster, a little fun target practice while waiting for the real games to begin.Game 1 should be a cold one. Forecasts call for the temperature to be around 50 degrees for the 8:09 p.m. first pitch, and it will cool off during the game to the high 40s. There is a 50-50 chance of rain during the afternoon, but it is expected to pass by game time.RING RINGChris Sale would rather talk about the ring he can win as a World Series champion instead of the almost certainly nonexistent navel ring that — he maintains with a straight face — scratched him from a start in the last round. The Red Sox left-hander will belly up to the mound to start against Los Angeles 10 days after his last outing and nine after he was hospitalized with what the team called a “stomach illness.” Sale joked — we think — that it was from a piercing gone bad, and he kept up the ruse back in Boston.“I’m not going to spill all of my secrets,” he said.Sale said Monday that he is back to 100 percent Mariano Rivera Jersey , and he deflected questions about the illness that melted even more weight away from his 6-foot-6, 180-pound frame. But his comment about the belly button ring has exploded like the infected wound he is pretending to have. Brock Holt said he would get a nipple or belly button ring if the Red Sox win it all; second baseman Ian Kinsler said it might become a trend.FINAL THREEYoenis Cespedes’ agent may be the next general manager of the New York Mets. Brodie Van Wagenen interviewed for the job Monday and is among three finalists along with former Milwaukee GM Doug Melvin and Tampa Bay senior vice president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom. The 44-year-old Van Wagenen has been co-head of CAA Baseball since 2010 and is familiar to the Mets as the representative for Cespedes, Jacob deGrom and Tim Tebow.“In my role as an agent, my solution is to create opportunities for players to be successful both on and off the field,” Van Wagenen said. “My conversations with the Mets continue to be organic. I believe baseball is better when the Mets are competitive and successful.”MODERN MANBrad Ausmus is promising to blend a better appreciation of analytics with his sturdy baseball foundation as he takes over as Angels manager. Ausmus was introduced as the replacement for Mike Scioscia on Monday, becoming the first new manager for Los Angeles in this millennium. Ausmus was dropped by the Detroit Tigers last fall after four intermittently successful seasons as their manager ended with a wholesale franchise rebuild. He spent the past year working in the Angels’ front office, examining every aspect of the organization as an assistant to general manager Billy Eppler.Ausmus thinks his lack of managerial experience was an asset when Detroit hired him, as he fit into the popular mold of hiring managers shortly removed from their playing days. But he feels better prepared for his second dugout job — partly because he has a newfound appreciation for the role of analytics in the modern game.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Unusual scheduling spawned even more atypical travel attire for Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo. The three-time All-Star wore a uniform Paul Molitor Jersey , complete with a blue jersey and gray pants, on the Cubs’ early Thursday morning flight for a makeup game against the Washington Nationals, then arrived in the clubhouse with the same outfit.“It’s all I got,” Rizzo said. The Cubs returned to Washington for the second time in a week after Sunday’s game was postponed. The four-day series, which included another rainout Friday and a doubleheader Saturday, featured nearly 11 hours in rain delays.Thursday’s game was scheduled on the only remaining common day off for the teams before the end of the regular season, and it split up what was to be a six-game homestand for the Cubs. It also came after a state of emergency was declared in Washington in anticipation of the effects of Hurricane Florence. The makeup date also extended the Cubs’ streak of 23 consecutive scheduled game dates to 30. Their next day off is Sept. 20.“At the end of the day , our front office, our owners have our back,” Rizzo said. “We’re in a long stretch of games that people in MLB that have been on the players’ side and they understand the human element of it and they seem not to care at all. It is what it is. We can sit here and complain about it or we can joke around about it.”Rizzo’s sartorial choice was met with amusement in the Cubs’ clubhouse.“I wish he had said something sooner because we could have all done it. I would have done it in a heartbeat,” manager Joe Maddon said.Might Rizzo be a trendsetter?“If we win, I’m sure you’ll see another guy wearing a uniform, too,” Rizzo said. “Hopefully Matt Garza Jersey , we win and keep winning and we’ll do a team dinner or something in Chicago in full uniform.” The Colorado Rockies and the Atlanta Braves hope that a change of venue will make a big difference in their respective National League Division Series. If it doesn't, both of those teams will see their seasons come to an end Sunday. The Milwaukee Brewers and the Los Angeles Dodgers lead their respective best-of-5 series by 2-0 margins as the two National League series pick up after a day off Saturday. The Rockies are hoping that a return to Coors Field will get their bats going against the Milwaukee Brewers, who appeared to do everything right in the two games at Miller Park. The Brewers are riding the bat of potential Most Valuable Player Christian Yelich and the outstanding arms in their lights-out bullpen. The two teams meet at 4:37 p.m. ET in a game that will be televised by the MLB Network. The Dodgers and Braves are scheduled to play at SunTrust Park at 8:07 p.m., and that game will be broadcast on FS1.The Rockies are minus-150 favorites to earn their first win in the series, while the Brewers are plus-130 underdogs, according to OddsShark. Those betting on Colorado have to risk $150 to win $100, while those wagerng on the Brewers will put up $100 to earn a profit of $130.The Dodgers are minus-180 favorites on the road , and the Braves are plus-150 underdogs.Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell is giving his team's pitchers for the Brewers' early advantage in the series. "The story of the series so far is how we鈥檝e pitched," Counsell said, per Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "The pitching has worked together as a team as out-getters and done a wonderful job."The Brewers will send left-hander Wade Miley to the mound to try to clinch the series against the Rockies. Miley started 16 games for the Brewers during the regular season and was 5-2 with a 2.57 earned-run average and a 1.215 WHIP. Miley has also been quite adept at keeping the ball in the ballpark, as he only gives up 0.3 home runs per nine innings.German Marquez will take the mound for the Rockies, and he had a 14-11 record with a 3.77 ERA and a 1.204 WHIP. Marquez is a power pitcher who struck out 230 batters in 196.0 innings. The Dodgers are favored because they are sending Walker Buehler to the mound in Atlanta. Buehler had a remarkable impact this season with an 8-5 record along with a 2.62 ERA, 0.961 WHIP and a strikeout ratio of 9.9 per nine innings.Kevin Gausman had been scheduled to start for the Braves, but the home team has opted to go with 25-year-old lefty Sean Newcomb. He brings a 12-9 record along with a 3.90 ERA along with a 1.329 WHIP.PredictionsThe Rockies could not solve the Brewers pitching in Milwaukee Christian Yelich Jersey , but their bats will return to life at Coors Field. Nolan Arenado and Trevor Story should trigger their attack and they will be able to jump out to an early lead. Marquez will keep the Brewers in check and the Rockies will win Game 3 and cut into Milwaukee's series lead. The Braves have been shut out in back-to-back games in Los Angeles, and they desperately need to get on the board early in Game 3.That may be difficult in against Buehler, who has been so effective to this point. If Freddie Freeman can do some damage early, the Braves are likely to make this a game, but the belief here is that Manny Machado will come through with a big hit late in the game to give the Dodgers a sweep in the series. All statistical information provided by Baseball-Reference.

DETROIT (AP) — Detroit Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire wasn’t going to accept the accolades for a move that made him look like a genius.Gardenhire gave Nicholas Castellanos a rare day off Sunday Kurt Suzuki Jersey , and his best hitter rewarded him with the game of his life on Monday night.Castellanos had a career-high five hits, including a go-ahead homer in the seventh inning, and drove in five runs as the Tigers beat the Chicago White Sox 9-5.“I’m not sure how much credit I can take for not playing Nicky when he couldn’t walk yesterday,” Gardenhire said. “I think most managers could figure that one out on their own.”Castellanos had played in 113 of Detroit’s first 118 games, but a bruised foot earned him the rare rest. He hit .216 in his previous 32 games.“I think it was good for me,” Castellanos said. “It had been a minute since I had just watched a baseball game from the bench, and it gave me a chance to see a few things from a different angle.”Castellanos singled in the first, doubled and scored in the fourth, hit an RBI double in the fifth and hit a two-run home run off Jeanmar Gomez (0-1) in the seventh. He came up again in the eighth with the bases loaded and two outs, needing a triple for the cycle, but settled for a two-run single that put the Tigers ahead 9-5.“That was a great night,” he said. “There are times when I put extra pressure on myself, because I know this is a young offense, so it is fun to have a game like this one.”It was the sixth five-RBI game of his career, including one against the White Sox on June 16. He’s hitting .419 with four homers and 14 RBIs in 43 at-bats against Chicago this season.“He started doing this to us last season ,” White Sox manager Rick Renteria said. “We come to town and it seems like he comes to life.”Louis Coleman (4-1) got the win with a scoreless inning of relief. The Tigers are 9-1 against the White Sox this season.Detroit is 3-1 since returning from a winless six-game road trip. Chicago has lost six of seven.Detroit starter Artie Lewicki allowed three runs on six hits and three walks in 4 2/3 innings. Chicago’s Reynaldo Lopez gave up four runs on seven hits and a walk in five innings. It was 4-4 when Castellanos lined his 17th homer into the Tigers bullpen with one out in the seventh.Adam Engel made it 6-5 with a homer off Alex Wilson in the eighth, but Victor Reyes restored the two-run lead with an RBI single in the bottom of the inning before Castellanos’ fifth hit.Chicago took a 3-0 lead in the third.Engel led off the inning with a double, Lewicki hit Nicky Delmonico and Yolmer Sanchez put down a bunt single to load the bases with no one out. Jose Abreu made it 1-0 with a sacrifice fly, and Daniel Palka followed with an RBI single. Avisail Garcia drove home the third run with another sacrifice fly.The White Sox were outscored 9-2 from there.“We had more opportunities to add on runs, but we left them out there,” Renteria said.Jeimer Candelario’s sacrifice fly made it 3-1 in the bottom of the third, and Victor Martinez’s RBI double in the fourth scored Castellanos. The Tigers took the lead with two runs in the fifth. After loading the bases with no one out, Jose Iglesias hit into a double play to make it 3-3, and Castellanos followed with an RBI double.“Nick is the heart of our offense, though, and when he starts hitting, it is contagious,” said James McCann, who had three hits and scored three runs.Omar Navarez led off the sixth with a homer off Drew VerHagen to make it 4-4, and the White Sox started the seventh with back-to-back singles Ozzie Albies Jersey , but Coleman got out of the jam with a shallow fly ball and a double play.TRAINER’S ROOMTigers: CF JaCoby Jones was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a strained right hamstring, and OF Mikie Mahtook was recalled from Triple-A Toledo. Mahtook started in left field. … RHP Michael Fulmer, who has been sidelined since July 20 with an oblique strain, will make a rehab start for Single-A Toledo on Tuesday or Wednesday.THOUGHTS FOR LEONYS MARTINThe Tigers have been closely following the news about Cleveland Indians outfielder Leonys Martin, who was hospitalized last week with a life-threatening bacterial infection. Martin was Detroit’s starting center fielder until he was traded to Cleveland on July 31.“Everyone here knew it was a very serious situation, and Leonys is obviously someone we care a lot about,” Gardenhire said. “It has been great to hear the updates that he’s doing better, moving around and he’s got the tubes out. It has been a scary few days.”UP NEXTThe teams play the second game of their three-game series on Tuesday, with Detroit’s Blaine Hardy (4-4, 3.83) facing Chicago’s Lucas Giolito (7-9, 6.23). The Chicago Cubs (58-40) will try to win consecutive games for the first time since right after the MLB All-Star break on Monday when they host the Arizona Diamondbacks (54-46). The Cubs alternated wins and losses in a five-game series with the St. Louis Cardinals going back to last Thursday that also included a doubleheader split at Wrigley Field on Saturday.MLB betting line: The Diamondbacks opened as -120 favorites (wager $120 to win $100); the total is at nine runs, according to sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark. Arizona ended Colorado's seven-game winning streak and moved back into second place behind the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Diamondbacks will now send southpaw Patrick Corbin (6-4, 3.24 ERA) to the mound looking for his first win since June 5. Corbin is 0-2 in seven starts since then with five no-decisions, two of which came away from home. The 29-year-old has been very good on the road this season, going 2-1 in nine outings with a 2.89 ERA.Why the Cubs can pay on the MLB linesChicago extended its winning streak to four games with a 9-6 victory in the series opener against St. Louis. The Cubs also closed out the series against the Cardinals with a 7-2 win on Sunday behind seven solid innings from pitcher Jose Quintana, who allowed two runs and six hits with four walks and six strikeouts on 121 pitches. It was a much-needed quality start for Chicago in a series that saw 65 total runs scored.Next up in the rotation is converted reliever Luke Farrell (3-3, 3.86), who has made just one start for the Cubs this season. That came back on June 23 when he surrendered three runs on two hits and two walks in 2.2 innings of an 11-2 defeat to the Cincinnati Reds. However, that remains the only time he has given up more than two earned runs this year.Smart betting pickArizona definitely has an edge in the pitching matchup, due mostly to Farrell's inexperience as a starter and Corbin's success on the road. The Diamondbacks have also won three of the past five meetings, according to the OddsShark MLB Database, including the last two at Wrigley Field. Before that, Chicago had won nine of the previous 11 in the series, so take Arizona to pull off the upset in the series opener.MLB betting trendsThe total has gone UNDER in five of Arizona's last seven games.Arizona is 14-5 in its last 19 games on the road.Chi Cubs is 12-3 in its last 15 games at home. All MLB odds and betting trends according to Bleacher Report鈥檚 official odds partner, OddsShark. Six games have been played in the National League Championship Series , and nothing has been decided between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Milwaukee Brewers. The two teams will meet in Game 7 of NLCS at Miller Park in Milwaukee Saturday night at 8:09 p.m. ET, as the Brewers recorded an impressive 7-2 victory in Game 6 to keep their season alive. The series finale will be televised by FS1.David Freese opened Game 6 with a home run for the Dodgers, but the Brewers dominated in all areas after that point. The NL Central champions responded with four runs in the bottom of the first inning and starter Wade Miley and series of Milwaukee relief pitchers kept the Dodgers from getting close after that.NLCS ScheduleGame 1: Brewers 6, Dodgers 5Game 2: Dodgers 4, Brewers 3Game 3: Brewers 4, Dodgers 0Game 4: Dodgers 2, Brewers 1 (13 innings)Game 5: Dodgers 5, Brewers 2Game 6: Brewers 7, Dodgers 2; Series tied 3-3Game 7: Dodgers at Brewers; Saturday, Oct. 20, at 8:09p.m. ET on FS1 Miley pitched 4.1 innings and allowed five hits and two runs before manager Craig Counsell brought in Corey Knebel to stop the Dodgers from putting a rally together. Knebel pitched 1.2 innings and struck out two batters and did not allow a hit.Jeremy Jeffress pitched a perfect seventh inning before rookie Corbin Burnes retired the Dodgers three-up Tony Phillips Jersey , three-down in both the eighth and ninth innings.Perhaps the most significant aspect of the game鈥攐ther than squaring the series at 3-3鈥攚as that the Brewers did not have to use ace reliever Josh Hader. The Dodgers had closed to 5-2, but the Brewers tacked on a run in the seventh and another in the eighth, and Counsell was able to save Hader and have him at full rest for Saturday's finale.SportsNet LA SportsNetLAHear from #Dodgers manager Dave Roberts about managing tonights game and how the team will approach Game 7 in Milwaukee. fE0VdcH3CiLos Angeles manager Dave Roberts understood the significance of not forcing the Brewers to use Hader. "You would have liked to have kept the game close enough to make them use him tonight," Roberts said at his postgame press conference. "Because of the run differential, they didn't have to use him."Counsell called not having to use Hader as "the best case scenario."The Dodgers will send pitcher Walker Buehler to the mound for the decisive game, and the Brewers will counter with Jhoulys Chacin. Those two hooked up in Los Angeles in Game 3, and the Brewers came out on top in that game by a 4-0 score.Chacin has not allowed a run in the postseason in 10.1 innings and has held opponents to a .162 average. Buehler has a 6.75 earned-run average and has allowed nine earned runs in 12.0 innings. Despite those difficulties, Buehler has struck out 15 hitters and opponents are hitting .182 off of him.The Brewers got clutch hits from Ryan Braun, Jesus Aguilar, Mike Moustakas and Erik Kratz in the first inning. That took the pressure off of the home team and allowed them to dictate the pace of Game 6.After that, the Brewers fans roared their approval for the rest of the game and helped pushed their team into a seventh meeting.PredictionThe Brewers had a double victory in Game 6 as they won decisively and did not have to use their ace relief pitcher.Hader has been the most dominant relief pitcher in the postseason , and Counsell will have a chance to use him for multiple innings in the seventh game. That has to give the Brewers manager an extra dose of confidence, and it will also cause anxiety for Roberts.Combine that with Chacin's proven ability to shut down Dodgers hitters and a rejuvenated Milwaukee batting order and the Brewers have the advantage. The Dodgers are a proven team that made it through to the World Series last year, and they will not be intimidated. This will be a tight, low-scoring game, and Brewers will win with a late run, possibly in extra innings. The Brewers win the National League pennant and will play the mighty Boston Red Sox in the World Series.NLCS tickets can be purchased throughStubHub. The Houston Astros need one more win to sweep the Cleveland Indians out of the American League Division Series after their 3-1 victory in Game 2 on Saturday at Minute Maid Park. For the second straight day, Houston got terrific starting pitching. Gerrit Cole held Cleveland's lineup to three hits, and he struck out 12 over seven innings. The lone run he gave up came on Francisco Lindor's solo homer in the third. The Astros offense stayed quiet until the sixth inning when Marwin Gonzalez hit a two-run double off Andrew Miller to give the defending World Series champions their first lead of the day.Roberto Osuna preserved the win with a four-out save that culminated in a Josh Donaldson flyout to center. Bregman Cements Himself as Household Name with ALDS Power ShowcaseCole will be the center of attention after Game 2, but Alex Bregman has further solidified his status as one of the game's best young hitters.Houston's All-Star third baseman sealed the win with a towering solo shot鈥攈is second in as many games鈥攐ff Trevor Bauer in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 3-1 lead.Per The Athletic's Jake Kaplan, Bregman has made a habit of hitting playoff homers against the MLB's best pitchers:Jake Kaplan jakemkaplanAll six of Alex Bregman鈥檚 postseason homers have come against pitchers who have been All-Stars.Just 24 years old, Bregman was the first third basemanin MLB historyto hit at least 50 doubles and 30 homers in a season this year.Injuries derailed Carlos Correa's campaign. The 2015 AL Rookie of the Year set career lows in batting average (.239.), on-base percentage (.323), slugging percentage (.405) and homers (15).Houston's offense didn't skip a beat because Bregman became a superstar as the No. 3 hitter. Terry Francona's Bullpen Mismanagement Has Indians On BrinkThere is plenty of blame to go around for Cleveland's failings, but manager Terry Francona is at the top of the list after Game 2.Specifically, Francona's bullpen management during the fateful sixth inning cost his team.Indians starter Carlos Carrasco cruised through five frames, scattering five hits without giving up a run. Jose Altuve hit an infield single to lead off the sixth , and Bregman followed with a walk. After Carrasco got Yuli Gurriel to line out to left field, Francona brought in Miller. The once-dominant reliever left a fastball over the plate that Gonzalez lined to right field. Melky Cabrera bobbled the ball, which allowed Altuve and Bregman to score.Miller then walked Correa on four pitches and threw a wild pitch before he intentionally walked Tyler White to load the bases. At the time Carrasco was pulled, he was at 77 pitches. Cleveland's biggest flaw has been a bullpen thatranked25th in ERA (4.60) and 29th in opponent slugging percentage (.448).Miller only threw 34 innings all season because of injuries. He posted his highest ERA (4.24) since 2011 (5.54), which was his last year as a starter.Cleveland acquired left-hander Brad Hand鈥攁 two-time All-Star with the San Diego Padres who was one ofeight relieversin MLB with at least 100 strikeouts鈥攊n July. He didn't appear in the game until the eighth inning when the score was already 3-1.The Indians put Bauer in the bullpenspecificallyto use him in high-leverage spots for this series. The right-hander worked out of the bases-loaded jam after he relieved Miller, but the damage was already done. Now, Cleveland will have to regroup after an off day Sunday to keep its season alive. What's Next? The series will shift to Progressive Field for Game 3 on Monday at 1:30 p.m. ET. The Indians' hopes will rest on Mike Clevinger (13-8, 3.02 ERA), and the Astros will counter with former AL Cy Young winner Dallas Keuchel (12-11, 3.74 ERA).

Boston Red Sox outfielder Mookie Bettsleft Sunday's game against the New York Mets with a left side injury.Anthony DiComo of reported Betts was injured while attempting to make a throw home. Pete Abraham of theBoston Globe reported it's the same side Betts injured earlier this season.Betts said he'll be ready to play Tuesday against the Yankees , per Ian Browne of landed on the disabled list in June after suffering a left abdominal strain near the end of May. He wound up being shelved for 13 games as a result. Before that, though, he had remained in relatively good health, averaging 152 games played through his first three full seasons. Before his first injury, the 25-year-old was having his finest season yet鈥攁nd that's saying something. Through May, he was hitting .359 with 17 home runs, 19 doubles, one triple Orlando Cepeda Jersey , 13 stolen bases and 37 RBI. That includes a pair of three-dinger games in his first 26 appearances.Overall this season, the three-time All-Star is hitting .337with 29 home runs and 72 runs batted in.This is a great all-around player who has received American League MVP votes in each of his first three years in the league, finishing runner-up to Mike Trout in 2016.Not only does he have a Silver Slugger on his resume, but he is also a two-time Gold Glover. It doens't sound like the Red Sox will need to go without their star player, though if he does miss time,J.D. Martinez is capable of playing right field. The team could also leave Martinez at designated hitter and insert either Blake Swihart鈥攚ho was kept over veteran Hanley Ramirez in May鈥攐r Brock Holt into the corner position. The key for Boston will be to make sure Betts is healthy for October, as there will be no replacing his bat. A great start to the season had the Red Sox as virtual locks for the playoffs by the time August got underway. As a result, they have the luxury of being cautious with injuries. A look at what’s happening around the majors today:RALLY MURPHYThe Cubs have scored exactly one run in five straight games , all via solo homers, but they’re hoping new addition Daniel Murphy can help string together some hits. The NL Central leaders bolstered their struggling lineup by acquiring Murphy in a trade with Washington on Tuesday, and he may join the club for a night game at Detroit. The 33-year-old Murphy was the NL Championship Series MVP when the Mets swept the Cubs in 2015, hitting .529 with four homers and six RBIs.“It’s going to be more fun to watch him hit,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. “He kind of devastated us in 2015.”‘PEN PAINYankees closer Aroldis Chapman is likely to have an MRI after he experienced pain Tuesday in the same left knee where he dealt with tendinitis earlier this season. Chapman was pulled in the 12th inning of a win over Miami after averaging just 96 mph on his fastball, the lowest of any outing for him since 2013, according to ESPN Stats & Info. Chapman has 31 saves and a 2.11 ERA this season. New York held reliever David Robertson out of Tuesday’s win because of a sore right shoulder, though manager Aaron Boone did not anticipate Robertson would be out long.POSEY’S DECISIONGiants catcher Buster Posey is expected to play against the Mets in New York Bob Gibson Jersey , but the season might soon be coming to an end for the six-time All-Star. Posey says he’s considering surgery to fix a hip problem that’s been hobbling him all year. The 31-year-old Posey hasn’t homered in a span of 166 at-bats since June 19, the third-longest homerless drought of his career in terms of days. San Francisco is 62-65 and behind several teams for the second NL wild-card spot.WELCOME BACKStephen Strasburg (6-7, 3.90 ERA) returns to Washington’s rotation after being sidelined by a cervical nerve impingement. His start at home against the Phillies will be his first outing since July 20. He’s 10-2 with a 2.22 ERA in 21 career starts vs. Philadelphia.HELLO OLD FRIENDMatt Adams is expected to join the Cardinals after being acquired Tuesday from the fading Nationals. St. Louis has charged back into playoff contention, and they’re hoping a reunion with the lefty-swinging slugger can push them over the top. Adams hit .257 with 18 home runs and 48 RBIs in 249 at-bats after signing with Washington in the offseason. Adams should be activated prior to the Cardinals’ series finale at Dodger Stadium.CHECK HIMWhite Sox manager Rick Renteria will undergo further testing after an episode of lightheadedness. The 56-year-old Renteria was released from a Minnesota hospital on Tuesday, a day after missing a game.Renteria will be tested at a hospital in Chicago. Bench coach Joe McEwing is running the team while Renteria is away.

This season is proving to be pretty dismal for the Cincinnati Reds Frank White Jersey , much like their recent past. However, Luis Castillo offers hope for the future. This season is also a lost cause for the San Diego Padres, much like their recent past. Eric Lauer, though, is San Diego’s version of Castillo. Two of the National League’s three last-place teams, the Reds and the Padres, open a four-game series Friday night at Great American Ball Park, and both clubs have long since begun looking to 2019 and beyond.Article continues below ...The Reds are counting on Castillo and the Padres are counting on Lauer to be an integral part of that rebuilding. After all, the present isn’t proving very kind to either team. The Pittsburgh Pirates finished off a three-game sweep of the Reds on Wednesday night, winning 3-2 at PNC Park to deal Cincinnati its 11th loss in 14 games. The Reds scored once in the ninth, put the potential tying run on second with none out and loaded the bases with two out, but still couldn’t get the tying run home against Pirates closer Felipe Vazquez. It’s been that kind of season for a team that lost 15 of its first 18 games and, except for a midseason surge that lasted about a month, hasn’t had much to cheer about. Especially right-hander Homer Bailey, who lost for the 14th time in 15 decisions. The Reds are 1-19 when he starts.“(We’re) just coming up short,” Reds interim manager Jim Riggleman said. “I’m satisfied with the effort we get. The guys play hard, play with intensity. But we’re not getting results.”The right-handed Castillo is up and down , but the right-hander’s 8-11 record and 4.83 ERA are a bit of a misnomer because he’s given Riggleman a number of good starts, including his last one. He struck out a career-high 11 while shutting out the surging St. Louis Cardinals on two hits for 6 2/3 innings of the Reds’ 4-0 victory Saturday at Busch Stadium.“We’ve seen it a number of times this year,” Riggleman said. “We feel like he can do this. He’s not 21, he’s 25, (and) it’s time. We just hopes he builds on that, has a good September and takes us into ’19 as one of the guys that can anchor our staff.”For the hard-throwing Castillo, September starts Thursday night.Likewise, the 23-year-old Lauer keeps offering the Padres hope for the immediate future. He pitched five no-hit innings Thursday against the first-place Colorado Rockies in his first start since spending a month on the disabled list with a left forearm strain. Lauer allowed only an unearned run, and the Padres went on to win 3-2 in 13 innings.Manager Andy Green kept him in long enough to throw 81 pitches, or probably more than was planned. Lauer breezed through his fifth and final inning, retiring all three batters he faced.“I think it was great for him to get through that,” Green said.Lauer is 5-7 with a 5.01 ERA in his first major league season with the Padres, and he’s offered up enough starts like that to suggest to them he’ll be a big part of their staff going forward. The left-hander from Kent State has given up two runs or fewer in seven of his last 12 starts, a span marred only because he permitted 14 runs in three starts just before going on the disabled list. He’s faced the Reds only once, holding them to one run on five hits over five innings of an 8-2 Padres victory June 2 at Petco Park.Castillo is 0-1 with a 5.91 ERA in two career starts against the Padres, including a 6-3 loss on June 3, when he gave up four runs and six hits in 4 2/3 innings. The Padres are 2-1 against the Reds this season and 22-13 against them since 2012 Kelvin Herrera Jersey , when Cincinnati last won the season series. San Diego was idle Wednesday after splitting a two-game series with the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Padres have lost three of four. Looking for an offensive boost, the Philadelphia Phillies added an All-Star who may not help them for a while. The NL East-leading Phillies acquired injured catcher Wilson Ramos from the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday for a player to be named or cash. They also got left-hander Aaron Loup from the Toronto Blue Jays for minor league right-hander Jacob Waguespack.Ramos is batting .297 with 14 homers and 53 RBIs but is on the disabled list with a left hamstring strain. General manager Matt Klentak said the best-case scenario has Ramos returning in mid-to-late August, though it’s possible he may be sidelined until September.”We’re uniquely positioned to take on a risk like this,” Klentak said in a conference call. ”The fact he may not be active for a few more weeks is not the end of the world for us.”Ramos said he can do everything behind the plate but still feels pain when he runs. When healthy, Ramos should upgrade an offense that has struggled during a four-game losing streak. He’s also solid defensively.”Wilson Ramos is a proven commodity, both behind the plate and at the plate, and also as a teammate,” Phillies manager Gabe Kapler said.Ramos, who turns 31 next month, has a $10.5 million salary, and the Phillies will be responsible for the remaining $3,443,548. He has 315 plate appearances and can earn $250,000 each for 450, 475 and 500.He is eligible for free agency after the World Series.Jorge Alfaro (.254, 7 homers, 23 RBIs) has been Philadelphia’s starting catcher with Andrew Knapp (.223 , 4, 15) also seeing plenty of action. They’ve combined for 16 errors and 13 passed balls.”My first reaction was surprise,” Ramos said of the trade. ”I was reading a lot of news, but as soon as they told me I was traded to the Phillies, I was happy at the moment but sad at the same time. Happy because that team is in first place and I can do a lot of things to help that team win a lot of games. And sad because I’m very thankful with this team because they helped me a lot. They trust me, give me a contract (after knee surgery in 2016). Now, I’m going to Philadelphia and trying to help that team win the World Series.”The Phillies already added more pop when they acquired infielder Asdrubal Cabrera from the New York Mets last Friday.Kapler said he’s happy the team got stronger ”without sacrificing our future to a large degree.”Loup has a 4.54 ERA in 50 relief appearances this season with 42 strikeouts in 35 2/3 innings, and the Phillies will assume the $594,422 remaining of his $1,812,500 salary.Waguespack was 4-6 with a 4.68 ERA in 21 games, including 15 starts, at Double-A Reading and Triple-A Lehigh Valley.”Our bullpen has been among the best in baseball in July,” Klentak said. ”Loup is really good against left-handed hitters. What he can do against lefties to neutralize them is important and something we haven’t had this year.”Infielder Trevor Plouffe and lefty Zach Curtis were designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster.—AP Sports Writer Jimmy Golen in Boston and AP freelancer Mark Didtler in St. Petersburg, Florida, contributed to this report.—

CLEVELAND (AP) — Michael Brantley knew what was coming after giving the Cleveland Indians their second straight walk-off victory over the Minnesota Twins.Brantley was mobbed by his teammates as he rounded first base following his ninth-inning single that gave Cleveland a 5-4 win Thursday.Cleveland’s All-Star left fielder did his best to avoid the various items poured over his head.“It’s tough Deion Sanders Jersey ,” Brantley said. “You’ve got some Gatorade. Some (baby) powder. You name it. It’s coming at you.”The latest celebration took place about 18 hours after Francisco Lindor hit a three-run homer in the ninth inning Wednesday night for a 5-2 victory. While Thursday’s party was a bit more subdued, the Indians persevered after Minnesota rallied from a 4-0 deficit against reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber.Brantley grounded a 2-1 pitch off Addison Reed (1-6) past a diving Miguel Sano at first base to score Greg Allen. Brantley avoided over-analyzing the moment.“I try to clear my mind,” he said. “It’s really too hard to think and hit. Just keep it simple and try to get that run the best you can.”“It’s nice to have him up in that situation,” Indians manager Terry Francona said. “You know the at-bat’s not going to get ahead of him or be too big.”The Indians lead Minnesota by 11 games in the AL Central and are 35-16 against division foes this season. Sano’s ninth-inning home run off closer Cody Allen tied Wednesday’s game, but the Twins lost on Lindor’s blast.“Walk-offs are obviously not satisfying,” Twins manager Paul Molitor. “But this was a little different from last night in that we got behind against a really good pitcher.”Allen, called up from Triple-A Columbus before the game, started the rally with a single off Reed and stole second with Lindor batting. Lindor’s groundout to first moved Allen to third.Andrew Miller (2-3) struck out a batter in the ninth. The left-hander made his fourth appearance since missing two months because of an inflamed right knee.Jake Cave’s fifth-inning sacrifice fly scored a run for Minnesota. Jorge Polanco hit his first home run of the season — a three-run shot in the sixth — to tie the game.Polanco missed the first 80 games of the season because of a suspension for violating baseball’s drug program.Kluber appeared to be closing in on his 15th win , which would have tied him for the AL lead with New York’s Luis Severino.Bobby Wilson singled to lead off the sixth. Eddie Rosario hit a towering fly to right with one out. Melky Cabrera drifted to the wall and attempted a leaping catch, but the ball popped out his glove as he fell to the ground and Roasrio was credited with a single.Polanco followed with his home run to right on a 1-0 pitch. Kluber struck out the next two hitters and stranded a runner in the seventh, but was done for the day after 117 pitches.“I could care less about if I get a win or the bullpen gets a win,” Kluber said. “The bottom line is, we won the game.”Lindor had three RBIs. Yonder Alonso, who started the game in a 3-for-36 slump, hit a leadoff homer in the second.Twins starter Jose Berrios allowed four runs and walked a career-high six batters in four innings.Cleveland outfielder Leyons Martin was placed on the 10-day disabled list. He has an unspecified illness, and Indians President Chris Antonetti said Martin could be out for longer than 10 days.GET TO TOWN FASTAllen was waiting out a rain delay in Durham Greg Maddux Jersey , North Carolina, on Wednesday when he was told he would replace Martin.“I found out about 7:15-7:20,” Allen said. “They told me I had to be on a flight like an hour and a half later. So I had to quickly pack up everything, get to the hotel and pack that stuff up, and get to the airport. It was a pretty quick turn of events.”KEY MOMENTPolanco is batting .280 with 13 RBIs in 33 games since being reinstated on July 2. His first home run couldn’t have come at a better time.“It gives me great confidence because Kluber is one of the best pitchers in the league,” Polanco said. “I’ve just been trying to put good contact on the ball since I came back from the suspension.”TRAINER’S ROOMTwins: OF Robbie Grossman (strained right hamstring), who was placed on the disabled list Aug. 6, will join the team in Detroit to continue his rehab.Indians: RHP Josh Tomlin (strained right hamstring) threw three scoreless innings on a rehab assignment at Double-A Akron on Wednesday.UP NEXTTwins: RHP Ervin Santana (0-0 , 6.14 ERA) makes his fourth start of the season in the series opener at Detroit, facing Tigers RHP Jordan Zimmermann (4-4, 4.31 ERA).Indians: RHP Shane Bieber (6-2, 4.58 ERA) takes on White Sox LHP Carlos Rodon (3-3, 2.94 ERA) as Cleveland begins a six-game trip. Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora criticized the Baltimore Orioles for their decision to begin Wednesday's game despite the forecast showing inclement weather was oncoming. The game , which was initially delayed for two hours and 33 minutes, was later postponed after the Red Sox had opened a 5-0 lead in the second inning."I'm annoyed about the whole three-game series," Cora told reporters. "It happened two days ago鈥攁 rain delay with two outs in the first inning鈥攁nd it happened again tonight. I'm not happy about it."The Orioles were responsible for deciding when (or if) the game started. Umpires took over deciding delays and postponements once the game began. All three of the games in this series featured at least one delay. Monday's win over Baltimore featured two delays totaling more than an hour."I feel for the team, actually. I don't care about the home runs Scott Feldman Jersey ," Cora said. "I mean, we have a 5-0 lead and one of the horses on the mound. It's not that it's a guaranteed win, but we know where we're at."The Red Sox are currently 5.5 games up on the New York Yankees in the American League East, but every game counts. New York had been playing at a 100-win pace for much of the season before pitching woes and injuries led the Yanks to falter a bit of late. PITTSBURGH (AP) — Jung Ho Kang is staying with the Pittsburgh Pirates.Pittsburgh and the third baseman agreed Thursday to a $3 million Eugenio Suarez Jersey , one-year contract that includes $2.5 million in performance bonuses based on plate appearances: $625,000 each for 200, 300, 400 and 500. The deal was announced a week after Pittsburgh declined a $5.5 million club option for Kang , triggering a $250,000 buyout.“We feel that bringing Jung Ho back in 2019 will make us better as he will have the ability to make a positive impact on our lineup,” general manager Neal Huntington said in a statement. “Competition and options are important to any organization and this signing provides us with both.”Kang was a star in his native South Korea when the Pirates signed him to an $11 million, four-year deal in January 2015. He finished third in NL Rookie of the Year balloting after hitting 15 homers and driving in 58 runs in 2015 Tucker Barnhart Jersey , when Pittsburgh won 98 games. It would be the high point of Kang’s time with the Pirates. The 31-year-old Kang didn’t play in the U.S. between September 2016 and June 2018 because of visa issues connected to three DUI arrests in South Korea. He made it back to the majors with Pittsburgh in September and went 2 for 6 during the final weekend of the season. As in Kang’s previous deal, the Pirates must allow him to become a free agent at the end of the contract.

The Chicago White Sox will try for back-to-back wins against the top team in baseball when they host the Boston Red Sox for the third game of a four-game series Saturday night at Guaranteed Rate Field.Chicago (54-81) is coming off a 6-1 win over the Red Sox on Friday in a game that included a two-hour , nine-minute rain delay. The White Sox have won six of their last eight games and 12 of their last 17.Boston (93-43) has lost five of its last six road games but maintains a healthy lead atop the American League East. The Red Sox will try to bounce back at the plate after being held to one run or fewer for the 17th time this season.Article continues below ...White Sox left-hander Carlos Rodon (6-3, 2.70 ERA) is set to make his 15th start. The 25-year-old is experiencing his best stretch of the season but draws a tough assignment against the Red Sox. He has yet to beat Boston in his career, posting an 0-2 record with a 3.38 ERA in three previous starts. In his only start against Boston this year, Rodon gave up four runs (two earned) and six hits in five innings and took the loss in a 4-2 defeat on June 9.Overall Rodon has recorded nine consecutive quality starts, which is the longest streak by any White Sox pitcher since he registered 10 quality starts in a row from Aug. 11, 2015, to April 13, 2016. Rodon is the team’s first pitcher with nine straight quality starts in a single season since Jose Quintana accomplished the feat in 2015.During Rodon’s current nine-start streak, he is 5-0 with a 1.84 ERA. He has allowed only 32 hits in 63 2/3 innings. The strong performances from Rodon, as well as several other starting pitchers, have helped Chicago collect more wins.“This month has been refreshing for us, the way we’ve been playing,” Rodon told the Chicago Sun-Times. “It’s something to look forward to and try to carry it out the rest of the season and transition that into spring training and into next season.”For the Red Sox, left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez (11-3, 3.44 ERA) will come off the disabled list and make his 20th start of the season. He has not pitched for Boston since July 14 because of a right ankle sprain Albert Pujols Jersey , but he looked good during a minor league rehabilitation stint. Before his injury, Rodriguez did not allow a run in three consecutive starts, logging 17 scoreless innings during that span. Rodriguez will look to build upon that streak as teammate Hector Velazquez returns to the bullpen.“He’s a full go,” Red Sox manager Alex Cora told “I think bringing him back is going to help us not only in the rotation but … it’s going to help our bullpen. Getting Hector back in the bullpen, having Drew (Pomeranz) in the bullpen is going to help us as far as how to manage a game if something happens early in the game.”In two career starts against the White Sox, Rodriguez is 0-0 with a 3.75 ERA. He has walked four and fanned 12 in 12 innings. This will be the 25-year-old’s first appearance against Chicago this season.Avisail Garcia has eight RBIs in his last eight games for the White Sox.Meanwhile, Mookie Betts is hitting .325 (13-for-40) with two doubles, two homers and six RBIs in his last 11 games for Boston. Even before he took the mound to twirl a playoff masterpiece, the talk was it could be the last time Clayton Kershaw — who has an opt-out clause in the contract that will pay him $65 million the next two years — wears the Dodgers home whites. That would be bad for the Dodgers on two fronts.No. 1, it would mean they lose the next two games in Milwaukee and fall short of the World Series. No. 2, it would mean they lose a pitcher who is in the conversation just after Sandy Koufax when it comes to the all-time Dodger greats.Don’t fear, Dodger fans. It’s highly doubtful Kershaw is going anywhere. The ace lefty was coy talking about possible free agency before his start Wednesday in Los Angeles, when he redeemed himself for a dismal performance in Game 1 of the NLCS by pitching three-hit ball over seven innings as the Dodgers moved within a game of the World Series with a 5-2 win.He said the kind of things a player is supposed to say to avoid tipping off his thoughts or alienating any of his fans.“I have not made a decision,” Kershaw said. “And to my understanding you get 10 days after the World Series. So should be a busy 10 days.”Kershaw has the contractual right to opt out of the seven-year deal signed in 2014 that pays him $215 million, and to use the leverage that comes with it. That’s likely , at the very least, to get him a few more years at the same kind of money he’s making today.Make no mistake about it, that money is huge. Kershaw is making $34 million this year, putting him just behind Angels outfielder Mike Trout after leading the highest-paid list for the previous three years. And, for the most part, Kershaw has earned his pay. He’s an astonishing 153-69 in 11 years as a Dodger, with an ERA of 2.39 and a WAR (wins above replacement) of 62.1.But his innings are in decline, partly because of injury and partly because of the way baseball is evolving. Kershaw’s ERA has inched up as his fastball has gone down in velocity, and he’s no longer the automatic win Dodger fans pencil him in for every time he takes the mound.By itself, that might not be enough for teams to pass on emptying the wallet to sign him. There aren’t many impact players like Kershaw, and the idea of him taking the mound every five days would have any general manager salivating. But baseball doesn’t value the starting pitcher like it used to, which was on display in Wednesday’s game when Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell removed starter Wade Miley after just five pitches. The move was unconventional and made mostly because Counsell hoped the Dodgers would load their lineup with right-handed hitters, but the trend across baseball is toward using starters less and replacing them with multiple relievers.Fox analyst and Hall of Famer John Smoltz believes the analytical age is causing teams to rethink the traditional rotation. It’s cheaper — and sometimes more effective — to have pitchers throw as hard as they can for as long as they can, he says, and then replace them with another pitcher who can do the same.“It’s hard-pressed for me to think that at the end of the day this is not just a cheaper version of baseball Roger Maris Jersey ,” Smoltz said earlier this year. “You can operate your team paying guys less and utilizing them in their younger years when they’re not making so much. Burn and churn and just keep shuffling the deck in the bullpen.”Kershaw’s value to the Dodgers was also questioned when he was passed over as Game 1 starter in the division series against Atlanta. Kershaw was miffed, then went out to pitch eight innings of two-hit ball to win Game 2.But he stumbled when picked to start the NLCS, not getting an out in the fourth inning before being pulled. And while he rebounded against the Brewers in Game 5, the knock on Kershaw is that, for all his greatness, he has underperformed at crucial times in the postseason and has yet to deliver the Dodgers a World Series title. That could change in the next two weeks as the Dodgers chase their first championship in 30 years. It might also convince the Dodgers to add as many years onto Kershaw’s contract as he will likely want.It will be money well spent, because Kershaw is as much an institution in LA as the great Dodger pitchers of the past. Vin Scully himself has compared him to Koufax except, of course, for the fact Koufax won three World Series rings in Los Angeles. No matter what happens in Milwaukee, though, expect Kershaw to remain a Dodger for years to come.____Tim Dahlberg is a national sports columnist for The Associated Press. PHOENIX (AP) The Pittsburgh Pirates have acquired hard-throwing closer Keone Kela from the Texas Rangers for minor league starter Taylor Hearn and a player to be named. The deal was announced late Monday night after the Rangers’ 9-5 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.”It was a challenging trade Burch Smith Jersey ,” Rangers GM Jon Daniels said. ”Keone has been awesome the last couple years, a dominant closer for us. Ultimately felt where we are, it made sense to consider these kind of deals where we can get multiple players.”The surging Pirates are 3 1/2 games behind Arizona for the final NL wild-card spot, with Atlanta and Colorado also ahead of them in the standings. The Pirates entered Monday with a 4.23 bullpen ERA, 10th best in the NL.”Kela is an experienced, quality, high-leverage reliever who projects to be a significant addition to our late-game options for the next few seasons,” Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said. The 25-year-old Kela has 24 saves and a 3.44 ERA this season. He will be arbitration eligible beginning next season and will not be eligible for free agency until after the 2021 season.Kela learned of the deal after being called from the bullpen in the seventh inning Monday night.”I’m still a little shocked, but I’m excited that it’s a new beginning, a new journey that I get to venture into Blaine Boyer Jersey ,” he said. ”Just forever grateful for the opportunity to play here in Texas, all the support from the fans.”Hearn is 3-6 with a 3.12 ERA in 19 starts at Double-A Altoona this year. The 23-year-old left-hander is a graduate of Royse City High School, located about 50 miles west of Globe Life Park in Arlington.— On the mound, the team survived the Yankees with the bullpen's best bend-but-don't-break effort.Like whenSuicide Squadhit theaters, "Red Sox Playoff Bullpen" played out almost exactly as poorly everyone thought it would. In Game 1, Sale handed off a 5-2 lead after 5.1 innings, and Boston escaped witha 5-4 victory. In a Game 2 loss, Price melted down early and the bullpen allowed another three runs. As they closed out the series in Game 4, the Red Sox turned to Sale instead of a reliever for the eighth inning before handing off a 4-1 lead to Kimbrel for the ninth. He loaded the bases and allowed a warning-track shot that with a few more feet would have won the game for New York鈥攖he Sox prevailed 4-3.The whole ordeal was like watching Han, Luke and Leia trapped in the trash compactor Trevor Cahill Jersey , every next thing pointing towards an epic disaster before some miracle pulls them out of trouble. It could be a relative unknown who can be the rock Boston will need in the tightest moments against Houston.Ryan Brasier started this season in Triple-A Pawtucket after spending last year in Japan. With the fans in Yankee Stadium itching and scratching, looking for any bit of hope to erupt into pandemonium, Brasier shut down the Yankees in the seventh of Game 4. He finished the series with four strikeouts in 2.1 innings, allowing no runs and earning the trust of manager Alex Cora in high-leverage situations. He'd spent nearly five seasons toiling around baseball before finding himself in the middle of a high-tension playoff series, once cursing at Gary Sanchez, telling the Yankees catcher to get back in the box before blowing him away on a 97-mph fastball.Cora will need Brasier and the bullpen in the ALCS, another change from Boston's regular-season reality."We work differently than other teams," Cora said during a press conference ahead of Game 1 of the ALDS. "We relied on our starters throughout the season. They carry us. We felt that on a nightly basis they were going to give us a chance to win鈥攅ither five innings, six innings, whatever. They were very consistent about it."Sale Melky Cabrera Jersey , Nathan Eovaldi in Game 2 and Rick Porcello in Game 4 gave Cora effective starts in the ALDS. But he'll want more from Price than the 1.2 innings he got in Game 2. In many ways, the Red Sox's chances hinge on Price finding form. Cora is committed to the 33-year-old left-hander sticking in the rotation, telling that he believes his star pitcher only needed to make some mechanical adjustments."There were a few things I noticed that he's gotten away from [his] last few starts," Cora said. "Hopefully he can make that adjustment. ... I do feel that with that adjustment, he'll be back to being the guy who pitched in the middle of the summer, and he'll dominate again."Rookie manager Alex Cora was a bench coach for the Astros last season.Elise Amendola/Associated PressCora himself is in his first postseason as an MLB manager and did not excel as a playoff player鈥攈e hit .154 over 26 at-bats in six series. But he was the shining light for Boston against the Yankees, seemingly unable to make a bad decision. The Red Sox have seen the Astros before, but nobody knows them better than Cora, who was Houston's bench coach during their World Series run last season.Following multiple seasons when many felt former skipper John Farrell was not aggressive enough in his managerial style, Cora has flipped the script. His decision to sub in Brock Holt and Rafael Devers for Ian Kinsler and Eduardo Nunez in Game 3 of the ALDS paid dividends , as did having Sale come in to set up Kimbrel in Game 4."I'm trying to remember some things that I told [Cora] that I wish I wouldn't have," Houston manager AJ Hinch said to the media Wednesday before his team's first workout."He was obviously right next to me every step of the way. As a bench coach, you're kind of involved in everything, but maybe master of nothing when it comes to being in charge."Houston is the favorite to win the series, topping Boston on paper in the bullpen and the rotation while featuring a comparable lineup. Several things will need to break the Sox's way in order for them to move onto the World Series. And if the Red Sox didn't like what pundits were saying before the Yankees, they won't like what they hear as they prepare to face Houston. But the rematch of last year's ALDS is set, and this time, the stakes are higher."We're ready for another shot," Porcello said.

DENVER (AP) — Colorado’s Nolan Arenado was held out of Saturday night’s starting lineup against the Los Angeles Dodgers because of a right shoulder strain , though the Rockies remain hopeful the injury won’t result in a trip to the disabled list for their power-hitting third baseman.“He got looked at by our medical staff. They all seem to think that this is something minor,” manager Bud Black said. “Hopefully this resolves itself quickly where he can get back on the diamond as an infielder. I suspect that this is not anything that’s going to last too long. I think it’s going to be manageable.”Arenado was lifted from Friday night’s game in the fifth inning after it became too painful to use his right arm to throw the ball. Black said the All-Star would continue to dress for games and could be called on to pinch hit if needed, though he remains day to day as far as returning to the infield.Arenado, 27, is hitting .307 with 29 home runs and 82 RBIs this season. In the clubhouse before the game, Arenado told reporters that his shoulder is still “a little sore. Hopefully, (Sunday) it feels better and we’ll go from there.”The five-time Gold Glove winner tweaked the shoulder turning a double play in the third inning Friday against the Dodgers. He believes several throws in previous games in which he didn’t get his legs under his throws also may have contributed to the injury.“It doesn’t really hurt doing anything besides throwing the baseball Jake Lamb Jersey , like extending on the ball,” Arenado said. “It is affecting my throwing for sure. I can’t go out there if it’s going to affect my throwing.” The National League East-leading Atlanta Braves (71-55) will look to extend their winning streak to four games and continue building their lead atop the division on Thursday when they visit the Miami Marlins (51-77) as solid road favorites at the sportsbooks. The Braves are coming off a three-game sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates on the road to rebound after losing four straight to the Colorado Rockies at home.MLB betting line: The Braves opened as -172 favorites (wager $172 to win $100); the total is at eight runs, according to sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark. CHICAGO — If the New York Rangers were attempting to find a way to build some confidence as they embark on a nine-day Ryan Getzlaf Jersey , four-game swing, Mika Zibanejad provided a performance the Rangers hope they can build on.The Rangers open their trip west on Wednesday against the Chicago Blackhawks fresh off a 5-2 victory over the Florida Panthers that was sparked by Zibanejad, who tallied two goals and two assists in the victory on Monday night.New York was efficient offensively in the victory, netting four goals in just 19 shots as the Rangers continued to play well at home, where they have won three of their past five games. Now, as they prepare for Wednesday’s game in Chicago and three more games in California before they return back to Madison Square Garden on Nov. 4, the Rangers will look to do what they can to replicate Tuesday’s victory on the road.Article continues below ...New York is 0-2-1 in road games this season. Rangers coach David Quinn is hoping that the performance his team got from Zibanejad against the Panthers can help provide some magic in the upcoming road trip.“I can’t tell you how happy I am for him that he’s getting rewarded statistically, because I know early on he was playing really good hockey and not getting rewarded Womens Ryan Kesler Jersey ,” Quinn told reporters following Tuesday’s victory. “I’ll tell you, he’s a complete player. I knew he was a good player before I got this job, I didn’t know he was this good. This is a guy that does a little bit of everything — he’s got skill, he’s tough, he can skate. And he’s an unbelievable guy, too. He’s a fun guy to be around and we’re lucky to have him.”Tuesday’s win followed up a Rangers loss over the weekend in which New York could only manage one goal against the Calgary Flames on 45 shots. But after showcasing a much different result Tuesday against the Panthers, the Rangers hope to follow a similar game plan Thursday against Chicago.“I think we were shooting pucks,” Zibanejad told reporters. “We were moving it quickly. We took advantage of the way they played. We got shots on goal and pucks to the net and it’s not much more difficult than that.”Like the Rangers Ryan Miller Jersey , the Blackhawks enter Thursday coming off a much-needed bounce-back performance. Brandon Saad scored a pair of goals in a 3-1 victory over the Anaheim Ducks on Tuesday that came just two days after a forgettable 6-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Sunday in which Chicago allowed 55 shots on goal, including a record-setting 33 in the second period alone.Corey Crawford, who made his third start of the season on Tuesday, finished the game with 24 saves. As important as it was for the Blackhawks to get back on track in the midst of a three-game homestand, Saad’s performance may have been equally vital. Saad had been relegated to the fourth line and Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville repeatedly told reporters he needed to see more from Saad.Saad responded on Tuesday and now hopes to use the two-goal game as a reminder that he can be an effective part of Chicago’s scoring attack when needed.“I thought (Saad) had the puck way more, I thought he took it to the net more and I think his speed was noticeable,” Quenneville told reporters Tuesday, according to the Chicago Tribune. BOSTON (AP) — Boston’s defense provided all the offense the Bruins needed Torey Krug Jersey , and then some.Zdeno Chara scored twice, Jaroslav Halak stopped 26 shots and the Bruins beat the Philadelphia Flyers 3-0 on Thursday night.“If I can contribute to the offense, it’s always nice, but I think that we are more proud of keeping our net clean from the pucks going in,” said Chara, who gave the Bruins a 1-0 lead 13 minutes into the second period and added an empty-netter with 23 seconds left.Fittingly, Halak got the only assist on Chara’s second goal as he capped off his second shutout as a Bruin and 44th of his career.“Every time you start a game or play a game, you’re hoping to get a win,” Halak said. “If you can get a shutout, that’s always more special.”Brian Elliott kept Philadelphia close with 22 saves, but the punchless Flyers couldn’t capitalize on the few chances they had to beat Halak. Philadelphia’s frustration boiled over in the third period, when the Flyers hurt their own chances to rally with six penalties.“We have to push it in the right direction a little bit harder. It was the first time the Sharks had been outshot this season.“Once we got the lead, we got a little too comfortable and laid off the gas, and they hit it,” San Jose defenseman Erik Karlsson said. “And once they did, we couldn’t find a way to get back.
